emana Baessmnn Application filed March 17, 1922. Serial No. 544,454.
To all whom z'zf may concern y Be it known that CLARENCE MAYER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, has invented an Improvement in Girdle Brassires, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to garments such as girdle-brassires and the like.
Among other objects, the invention is in tended to rovide a novel and improved garment of this character which may be easily applied and comfortably worn.
The invention consists in the novel combination, constructions and arrangements, hereinafter described or claimed, for carrying out the above stated objects and such other objects as will hereinafter appear.
The inventiommay be best understood by reference to one illustrative garment embodying the invention and shown in the accompanying drawings.
ln said drawings:
Fig. 1 is a` perspective view of the gar ment as it is worn.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the back of the garment.
Fig. 3 is a ment.
The illustrative garment comprises in general a girdley portion and a brassire portion or equivalent garment., such as a bandeau, made either of one. piece of fabric or several pieces suitably secured together.
In the illustrative garment 10 designates a girdle formed of suitable fabric and 11 a brassire suitably attached thereto, each referably consisting of a suitably decorated igabric such asis generally employed in garments of this character. i
The girdle comprises a front or abdominal portion 12 and a back portion 13 connected together by elastic webbing 14, such as that known as sgargical elasticarranged to fall over the hips. vided, if desired, with suitable honing. 1n the arrangement shown the boning comprises a series of spaced bones l5 secured to the fabric i'n a herringbone pattern with the apices leointing down. This arrangement lts considerabie freedom of move ment on the part of the wearer, particuiarly r-roviding dexibility along diagonai lines I espontq ng with` the lines of fissure of e v thout impairing the efiiciency of he.-. lt desired the back portion plan or development of the gar- The front portion is pro-- of the girdle may be provided with suitable boning 16.
Suitable hose supports -17 depend from the front and back portions of the girdle and cooperate to maintain the garment properly on the ligure.
The brassire comprises front and back portions 18 and 19 attached to the girdle and connected together at one side by a strip of elastic webbing 20 such as surgical elastic. The front portion 18 is suitably tucked as shown at 21 to give the front portion the required fullness to cover the bust. A draw* string 22 along the upper edge is provided for removing any looseness at the top edge of the brassire. Shoulder straps 23 are provided for passing over the shoulders of the wearer and provided with suitable means for permitting adjustment. Such means may comprise a series of button holes 24 arranged to be buttoned over a button on the tabs 25 to secure the required fit. Preferably the tabs 25 are formed of suitable elastic to permit the shoulder straps to yield when necessary. The free ed 'es 26 and 27 of the gar'- ment are suitably bound with tape and provided with suitable independent fastening means such as a series of hooks and eyes, thereby preserving the flexibility of the garment at the side.
By arranging the fastening means at the side of the wearer instead of at the front or back, they are accessibly located without causing an uncomfortable and Vrelatively inliexible region at the front of the garment which detracts from the shapeliness of the tit and interferes with the movements of the wearer. Furthermore, in fasteninvr the garment along lthe side, the flesh of t e wearer is smoothed and flattened in front and not crowded together as frequently happens in applying a frontI fastening garment. The normal contour of the figure at the front preserved by the fabric front portion of the girdle which, as is clearly shown in the drawings, is without eiastic webbing.
Preferably the girdie is provided with elastic webbing 28 and 29 arranged to fail opposite the side the webbing 14 falls. Also the b rabiy provided with eiastic we with the webbing 20 e si o. the garment, This l s garment snugly about vidmg the required einer dem or f arranged to conform to While for the salie of brevity in describing the invention, l have employed the terms brassire and girdle in the sense in which these terms are understood in the trade, it is intended to include under these terms functionally equivalent garments.
Obviously the present invention is not limited to any particular form of construction and the details of the illustrative garment may be variously. modified. Moreover it is not indispensable that all features of the inf vention be used conjointly as they may be advantageously employed in various combinations and sub-combinations.
Claims:
1. i garment comprising a girdle constructed and arranged to encircle the figure from the waist downwardly over the hips; said girdle comprising fabric front and back portions to cover respectively the abdominal and back portions of the figure, and elastic webbing hip-covering portions at the sides secured to said front and back portions respectively and constructed and the contour of the figure at the hips; one of said elastic webbing portions being divided longitudinally and having cooperating fastening means along its adjacent edges for securing the girdle about the figure.
2. A closed front girdle constructed and arranged to encircle the figurein the region of the hips comprising, in combination, a closed fabric front portion and a fabric back portion for covering, respectively, the abdominal and back portions of the figure, and elastic webbing hip-covering portions extending from the top to the bottom of the girdle at the sides and constructed and arranged to conform to the contour of the hips; said girdle constructed and arranged to open at the side; the elastic webbing at that side being provided at its securing edge witb a series of independent fastening elements; the other edge of the open side being provided with a series of independent fastening elements; tbe elements in each series directly cooperating with the elements in tbe other series to secure the girdle about the figure, thereby preserving tbe flexibility of girdle at tbat side.
3. fi. garment comprising in combination a girdle constructed and arranged to circle tlie fi re in region bips c.) t l* idear/re said girdle comprising fabric back portions for covering respectively tbe abdominal and back portions of the figure, and elastic webbing hip-covering portions extending from the top to the bottom of tlie girdle at the sides and constructed and arranged to conform to thecontour of tbe hips; said fabric front portion provided with series of spaced boning to stiften said front portion and arranged to permit maximum flexibility of said front portion in use along lines converging downwardly towards the vertical center line of the front portion and hose supporters extending from the lower edge of said girdle and cooperating in use with said elastic webbing and said boning to maintain the conformation of said girdle to the contour of the figure.
l. As an article of manufacture, a girdlebrassire of' the type described comprising a brassire portion and a hip encircling girdle portion each having elastic webbing at the sides thereof; the webbing of the girdle portion being in alignment with the webbing of the brassire portion; said Webbing of the girdle covering and conforming to tbe contour of the hips; said garment being open at one side and having independent fastening means at that side for securing the garment about tlie figure and pre serving the flexibility of the garment at that side; said girdle having a series of spaced bones arran ed in a Herring-bone pattern down the ront thereof with the apices of the bones pointing down, thereby providing iiexibility but preventing undesirable bulging.
5. A garment of the class described coinprising a closed front girdle portion and a brassire portion each made of the usual fabric and each having elastic webbing at the sides thereof; tbe elastic webbing in said girdle being arranged to cover and conform to the bips; said garment being open throughout its lengtbat one side having separate books and eyes secured thereto adjacent the edges to fe aten 'tbe garabout tbe figure; the fabric :front of said garment preventing any substantial bulging or contraction of tbe i front.
