Application filed gcptember 19, 1919. Serial No. eaters.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Gnonen D. CLARDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Passaic, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Trimming Devices, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to hair-cutting appliances and is particularly intended to provide a simple and inexpensive device which may be readily combined with the standard parts of a safety razor, adapting it to the trimming of hair. It is one of the advantages of my device that it constitutes an attachment merely and is not an essential part of the razor, which is complete for shaving when my attachment is removed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an end elevation of the head of a safety razor with my attachment in position;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same;
Figures 3, 4 and 5 are plan views of the cap, blade, and guard of a standard form of safety razor;
Figure 6 is a lan view of one form of my attachment; and,
Figure 7 is a plan view of a modified form of attachment.
In the drawings 1 have illustrated the application of my device to a standard form of flexible-blade razor to which it is particularly adapted, though it is obvious that by making suitable alterations the attachment may be utilized with other forms of safety razors.
The numeral 1 indicates the handle of a safety razor and 2 indicates a transverselycurved blade-supporting plate detachably secured to the upper end of the handle and having guard teeth 3 formed on its opposite longitudinal edges. The cap 4, transversely curved in conformity with the transverse curvature of the blade support, is provided with a central post 5 for co-operation with the handle 1 and with blade positioning pins 6 which pass through openings 7 in the blade support. The numeral 8 represents a flexible double-edge razor blade with perforations 9 co-operating with the perforations 7 of the blade support to receive the post 5 and pins 6 of the cap.
Thus far I have described the standard parts of a flexible-blade razor in which the handle is internally threaded at one end for detachable engagement with the central post on the blade-clamping cap, such for example as that made by the Gillette Safety Razor Company. The hair-trimming attachment for oo-operation with this razor comprises a thin metal plate 10 transversely curved to approximate the curvature of the blade clamping parts and having along one edge thereof a series of elongated comb teeth 11. 'lransversely elongated slots 12 are provided in the plate for co-operation with the post 5 and the pins 6 of the cap.
When set up for use as a hair-trim instrument the comb tooth plate 10 is place upon the blade support 2 and the blade 8 and cap 4 are superimposed thereon. The parts are then clamped together in the usual manner, the frictional engagement of the blade 8 and blade support 2 serving to retain the comb plate 10 in transverse position. The elongated slots 12 permit a transverse adjustment of the comb teeth 11 so that their ends may be positioned at any desired dis tance from the cutting edge of the blade 8. in this manner an adjustment may be secured enabling the user to trim his hair to the desired length.
In Figure 7 l have illustrated a modified form of plate 13 having comb teeth 14 positioned on opposite sides thereof and varying from a minimum length at 15 to a maximum length at 16. 'lransversely elongated slots 12 are provided in this plate as in the one heretofore described. By using this form of comb tooth plate a tapering cut may be obtained, as for example over the ears, teeth being provided on each side of the plate and tapering in the same direction so that the hair on both sides of the head may be trimmed without reversing the plate or changing its adjustment.
In operation the trimmer is used as one would use a comb, the plate being set with the ends of the comb teeth the desired distance from the blade edge. This adjustment, varying with the character of the hair and the length to which it is to be trimmed, can be easily ascertained by trial. The tapering off of the hair at the back and over the ears is obtained by gradually decreasing the angle of the comb with respect to the seal as the downward stroke progresses. A similar result may be obtained by the use res a but two forms of my attachment adapted for use on a particular type of safety razor it is obvious that various modifications and changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a safety razor including a blade support, a blade, means for clamping the blade on the support and a guard projecting beyond the edge of the blade, of a removable plate held by the blade-clamping means between the latter and the blade support and having a series of comb teeth projecting beyond the uard.
2. The combination with a sa ety razor including a blade support, a blade, means for clamping the blade on the support and a guard projecting beyond the edge of the blade, of a removable plate held by the blade-clamping means between the latter and the blade support and having a series of comb teeth projecting beyond the guard, said plate being adjustable with respect to the guard and blade edge in a direction transverse to the length of the latter.
3. The combination with a safety razor including a perforated blade support, a
erforated blade, means for clamping the blade on the support, blade-positioning means passing through the perforations in the blade and support, and a guard projecting beyond the edge of the blade, of a removable plate held by the blade-clamping means between the latter and the blade support and having a series of comb teeth projecting beyond the guard, said plate being provided with slots adapted to receive the blade-positioning means and permitting adjustment of the plate transversely to the length of the blade edge.
4:. The combination with a safety razor including a transversely-curved blade support, a normally-fiat flexible blade, means for clamping the blade on the support and simultaneously flexing it transversely, and
a guard projecting beyond the edge of the blade, of a transverselycurved rigid plate held bv the blade-clamping means between the latter and the blade support and having a series of comb teeth projectmg beyond the guard.
5. The combination with a safety razor aeeaeaa including a transversely-curved blade sup ort, a normally-flat flexible blade, means or clamping the blade on the support and simultaneously flexing it transversely, and a guard projecting be 0nd the edge of the blade, of a transverse y-curved rigid plate held by the blade-clamping means between the latter and the blade support and having a series of comb teeth projecting beyond the guard, said plate being adjustable in a dirgction transverse to the length of the blade e go.
6. The combination with a safety razor including a blade support, a blade, means for clamping the blade on the support and a guard pro ecting beyond the edge of the blade, of a removable plate held by the blade-clamping means between the latter and the blade support and having a series of comb teeth projecting beyond the guard and progressively varying in length from one end of the series to the other.
7. The combination with a safety razor including a blade support, a blade having two "opposite cutting edges, means for clamping the blade on the support and a guard projecting beyond each of the blade edges, of a removable plate held b the blade-clamping means between the atter and the blade support and having on each of its longitudinal edges a series of comb teeth projecting beyond the adjacent guard.
8. The combination with a safety razor including a blade support, a blade having two opposite cutting edges, means for clamping the blade on the support and a guard projecting beyond each of the blade edges, of a removable plate held by the blade-clamping means between the latter and the blade support and having on each of its longitudinal edges a series of comb teeth projecting beyond the adjacent guard and progressively varying in length from one end of the series to the other, "the longest teeth in both series being located at the same end of said plate.
9. The combination with a safety razor including a transversely-curved blade support provided on each of its opposite longitudinal edges with a guard, a normally-flat flexible blade having two opposite cutting edges, and a transversely-curved bladeclamping cap provided with positioning pins passing through perforations in the blade and support, of a transversely-curved rigid plate removably held between the blade-clamping cap and the blade support and provided with a series of comb teeth projecting beyond the adjacent guard, said 7 plate being slotted to receive said positioning pins and provide for its ad ustment transversely to the length of the blade edges.
10.
