KILN.
Application filed February 26, 1923.
T all whom it 17mg! concern.
Be it known that l, Inn BIviNs. a citizen of the United States, residing at independence. in the county ot nieiy and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful F111). rovements in Kilns, of which the following a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in kilns and particularly to a kiln for firing clay ware.
An object of the invention is to provide a kiln in which the ware receiving compartment has a maximum capacity, and wherein the heating structure is placed at one side thereof.
The invention further comprehends the provision of a specially built heating struc ture having an inclined wall above the lire bOX for directing the heat over the battle between the fire be and the ware compartment laterally into said compartment.
The invention also includes the provision of an observation opening in the inclined wall above the fire box through which the condition of the were may be determined at all times.
The details of construction and arrangement of the parts to carry out these and other objects is clearly brought out in the tollowinp; description and claim, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which;
e a kiln including heating structure, which is located at on side.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of 1.
1 indicate a ki n having a dome-shaped root 2 and ware compartment 3, with the heating structure e disposed at one side of the compartment 3.
This heating structure includes a front 5 for the fire box 6 which supports one end Serial No. 621,216.
of the grate 7 and is formed with an arched opening 8 to provide free access to the ash pit- 9. A baffle 10 forms the bacl: of the fire bOX carries the rear end of the grate, and divides the fire box from the ware compartment. An opening 11 in the front having an arched top portion and sides inclined as indicated at l to provide strength, com- Inui'iicates with the ire box to permit the charging and won 11g of the fire. Above the fire box the heating; structure is provided with an inclined wall 13, having fire resistant lining 14, which directs the heat into the ware compartment through the opening 15 over the battle. An observation opening or peep hole 16 is formed in the inclined 'all in line with the opening 15 so that conditions in the were compartment may be observed from time to time to determine the progress of the process being carried on in the kiln.
The heat striking the inclined wall 13 is directed laterally into the ware compartient which is advantageous to secure more uniform distribution of heat in said compartment, and consequently more uniform temperature, the heat being directed into the compartn'zent in the central portion.
l fhat is claimed is:
In a kiln, a pottery chamber having a top, an inclined arch extending to a point adjacent the upper end of the pottery chamher, a front wall having an opening therein arranged below the arch, a fire box below the arch, and a vertical baliie wall arranged between the lire box and the pottery chamber and extending above the opening, the crown being provided with a horizontally arranged sight opening above the bafiie wall.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
IKE BIVINS.
