FAY A. YEAGER, OF MUSKEGON, MICHIGAN;
WINDOW CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed March 14, 1922. 3 Serial NIL-543,606.;
' To dz whom it may concern: Be it known that .I, FAY A. YEAGER, a
citizen of the United Statesof America, re-
siding at Muskegon, in the county of Mus-- l kegon and State-ofMichigan, have invented certainnew and useful 'lmprovements 1n Window. Construction; and I do hereby declare the following to'lbe. a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeandjuse the same.
This inventionrelates to a window construction adapted to be placed in a window openingin a house or the like, in which 16 eithersections of glass-or screen may be detachably secured, the same being readily rea movable for interchanging at different seasons of the year, or at any other times when desired. It is an object and purpose of the invention to construct a frame in which said glass or screenmay be detachably held, the frame being made entirely from sheet metal at a low cost, and the means used for detachably securing the glass or screen sec- 2 tions beingsimple, economical to make and sure and positive in action. Other objects and purposes, relatingto a practical,v eflicient', and durable window frame construction, will appear as understanding of the' invention is had from the following description, taken in connection wlththe accompanying drawings, inwhich, I
F1g. 1 is a front elevation of the window construction, parts beingbroken away. and
in section to better disclose the construction.
Fig. 2 is an end view of the window frame. Fig. 3'is a transverse section substantially onthe plane of line 3-3, of Fig. 1. b
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side view and section showing the means used for detachably- Fig. 7 is an elevation of the screen panels used, and 1 Fig. 8 is a like new of the glass panels used.
' Like reference characters refer to like in the difierent figures of the drawings.
. The outer frame of the window construc tion is rectangular'in shape, the sides including parts let each end being bent at right angles for a short distance to make sections 2 in each of which a short slot 3 is cut.
The frame members are of angle formation,
a flange 4 being integral with and extending inwardly from the 'side 1 and, similarly flanges 5 extend inwardly from the sections 2 and under the ends of the flanges 4 which I ual .to the thickness I of the flange 5 so that anges 4 and 5 lie in Such raised portions are;
are raised a distance the same plane. shown at. 6.
the main portions" of the flanges 7 and 8 in the same planes therewith. Each of the. parts 7 a has an opening 9 therein designed to come into conjunction with the openings made by slots 3 when the frame members are 7o The upper and lower cross members of the frame are also of angle formation, havassembled. The frame is adapted to be placed in an opening, the sidesof which are -made by vertical casing members 10 and the upper and lower ends by casing members 11,
A vertica bar divides the frame substantially midway between its sides; This bar is made from sheet metal bent longitudinally at.its middle to make two contacting portions 13, each being bent outwardly to form a flange 14, the flanges extending in .opposite' directions. At its ends the metal is formed into sleeves 15 open atone end,
a slot 16 beingcut through-and lengthwise of each sleeve at its outer side. In each sleeve a'bolt 17 is slidably mounted, having an operating pin. 18 connected' thereto an extending through the slot 16 in the sleeve with which it is associated. These bolts are adapted to pass through openings in the flanges -7 and into sockets made in the casplace in the frame with its flanges 14jlying,
variations in sizes of windows, the openings bolt 24 is slidably mounted, it having an operating pin 25 projecting through the slot 23. Thisbolt with the slidable mounting thereof is identical with bolt 17 and its mount and is designed to pass through an opening in the part 1 of the side bars of the frame and into suitable sockets in the casing member 10. The inner ends of the cross bars thus made are partly cut away and slotted, as indicated at 26 for engagement with the. headed pins 19,'the disconnected parts being shown in Fig. 5 in position for ready connection when desired. In fact it is very easy to connect or disconnect all of the intermediate frame bars from the outer frame without use of tools, the. asse1nbly being very easily attained, as is obvlous.
The frame as made is adapted to receive glass or screen panels in the four open spaces in the frame. The screen section 26 is placed in a frame of metal having sides 27 and-upper and lower ends 28, the frame being of a size such that it freely enters between the sides 1 and part 13 and betweenv the ends 7 and the part 20, lying against the flanges-4,14 and 2].. Headed pins 29 are attached to and extend from the sides 1 and the parts 13 on which wedging locking members are slidably and detachably mounted. I These locking members are made from sheet metal including a plate 30 from which a bottom 31 is turned at right'angles while an end 32 is also turned at right angles at one end of the plate 30. An inclined slot 33 is cut in the plate 30, at one end being enlarged, as indicated at 34 for the passageof the heads of pins 29 in applying the locking members thereto. ,By moving the locking members in one direction, the bases 31 thereof may be wedged against the sides 27 of the screen panels, thus serving to ,securely hold them in position. ,on move- -ment in the opposite direction, the panels are released, and if desired may be removed on removal of the lockingmembers, or one of them for each panel, it being. obvious that the screen panels may thus be placed in the main frame and left as long as desired, being removable whenever ,desired.
In. case the frame is to be equipped. with glass panels, in place of the screen panels the same areconstructed as shown inFig.
8, the rectangular section 35 of glass being finished at its edges with border strips 36, preferably of rubber. easily substituted for the screen replacing the other, as is clear.
From the foregoing it is evident that a The glass panels are panels one very simple and economically constructed window frame construction is provided adapted for use at all seasons of the year, obviating the placing of an additional screen construction within the window in the summer time, and when once secured in a window opening being left there permanently, -the screen and glass panels beinginterchanged at different seasons. All of the frame may be filled with either the screen or the glass panels, or partly filled with each. The frame may be adjusted I the invention which is defined in the appended vclaims and I consider my invention to include all such modifications as come within the scope of the said claims.
