Patented Mar. 17, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE RALPH AUGUST NORQUIST AND GLENN HARRISON NORQUIST, F JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK WINDOW sonnen Application led December 11, 1929. Serial No. 413,388.
Our present invention relates to rolling window screens and has special reference to screens of the general construction shown and described in an application tiled by us August 28, 1929, Serial No. 389,029. It has been found in actual practice that workmen, in fitting' windows into buildings, will, through carelessness or otherwise, leave varying distances between the inner and outer sills and between the sills and the lower ends of the box frames in which the window sashes are mounted to slide. These variations in the setting of the several parts make it dithcult to accurately fit the screen frames, and guides to windows, and the object of the present invention to provide means whereby the window screen guides may be elongated as desired in order to properly meet the inner sill and extend the full length of the window fra-ine. The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing and will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a window showing the present invention applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a detail elevation.
In the drawing, the reference numeral 1 indicates the window frame and 2 the sill. At the top of the window frame a case 3 is secured in which the screen t is adapted to be wound, and guides 5 extend downwardly from the ends of the case 3 adjacent the side members of the window frame to guide the edges of the screen and maintain the same in a straight taut condition as the screen is wound or unwound. At the lower end of the screen is a rail 6 equipped at its ends with latches 7 adapted to lock the screen in a lowered or partly raised position. In the present construction, the guides 5 consist each of a continuous sheet metal blank doubled upon itself to provide a flange 8 which is disposed against the sash frame 9 and is secured thereto by screws 10 or similar fastenings. The flange 8 is of suliicient extent to provide a firm anchorage for the guide and remain between the lines of the sash frame, as will be understood upon reference to Fig. 2, and from the edge of the flange presented to the frame 1 the material of the guide is bent inwardly at a right angle to provide the member 11 projecting into the room from the anchoring flange.
rIhis intermediate web 11 extends inwardly to A a suliicient extent to permit the screen to clear any projecting hardware on the window sash which might otherwise interfere with the rail 6, and to firmly support the extensions presently described, and the plies thereof are then separated and bent toward the central vertical line of the screen and disposed in parallel vertical planes, as shown at 12, providing the guiding ianges or lips between which the edge of the screen is received, the free edges of these guiding strips or lips being separated, as shown at 13.
In accordance with the present invention, a vertical slot 14 is formed through the intermediate web or flange 11, and disposed against the opposite sides of said web or flange are plates 15 and 16 which are of right angular formation so as to conform to the outline and fit closely to the intermediate web 11 and the guide strips 12, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. lVithin those portions of these extension plates which bear against .the opposite sides of the intermediate web 11 are openings to receive fastening screws 17 which pass through the respective slots 14 and are equipped at their outer sides with nuts 18 whereby the extensions may be secured in position. As shown in Fig. 1, the extensions will depend below the lower ends of the guides 5 and restat their lower ends upon the sill Q, so that an accurate fit of the screen may be obtained and a guide for the screen cloth will be provided extending the lltl tif)
wound by a spring housed within the case 3, it is necessary to provide means for locking the screen in its fully lowered position and this means is the latch 7 and the notch 19.
The extension shown and described herein is very light and may be Very easily ap plied to the guides at a slight expense and obviously it may be set to depend to a greater or lesser extent belowl the guide and will expedite the work of fitting the screens inasmuch as it will not be necessary to ont the guides, which may be provided in standard i lengths and made to fit the window by the yuse of the extensions when such use is necessary.
K Having thus described the invention, we claim: y Y
In a window screen, the combination' of guides having anchoring flanges adaptedto be secured to the Window sash frame, intermediate portions extending inwardly from the anchoring flanges and parallel guiding lips extending from said intermediate por tions at right angles thereto, said intermediate portions having a vertical slot therein, and extension plates of right angular formation iitting against the opposite sides ot said intermediate portions of the guidesV and the guiding lips, and Aa retaining bolt carried by' said plates and passing through the vertical slot in the intermediate portion ofthe guide.
In testimony whereotl we aliix our signa tures. f
