Be itknown that I, ELLA L. SMiTH, a citizen of the United States of America,re siding at Roanoke, in the county of Randolph and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dolls, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in dolls and other toys, and comprises the method of making the bodies of stuffed dolls and of stuffing the dolls. Some of the objects of my invention are: the construction otl doll bodies economically and rapidly; a

saving of material; to cut the pieces toiorm the body inorder to give proper proportions and suitable curves to the trunk, head, arms, and legs; to make ears integral with the head of the doll; and to construct arms which may not easily be torn otlE of the body.

VTith these and other objects in view, one embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is an outline of the patterns used to construct the doll body;

Figure 2 is a front view of the doll;

Figure 3 is a back view thereof;

Figure lis a section on line 4 4 of Figure 1;

Figure 5 is a side view of the head and part of the body of a kitten;

Figure 6 is a front view thereof;

Figure 7 is a top plan; and

Figure 8 is a section on line 8-8 of Figure 6.

rThe doll body may be made of any suitable material, such as muslin or other fabric, and may be stuffed with any suitable material, such as cotton.

The pieces to construct the complete body are shown placed fiat in Figure 1. The front of the bodyand legs consists of one piece 1; the back of two pieces 2 and 3; the arms each or' one piece 4 and 5, and the backs of the legs each of two pieces 6, 7 and 8, 9. The

top of the head consists of a disc 10.

The doll body is constructed by suitably attaching together, as by sewing, the parts 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10, leaving an opening U0 in the back seam from the point indicated by 11 to the point indicated by 12, and leaving open the seam indicated between the points 13 and 14:. The feet are shaped by folding in the material of the part 1 as indicated and stitching it at 15. The body is now turned and stuifed. During the process of stuffing, a stiening means for the head and shoulders is inserted at 16. This may be a small cylinder of wood or other suitable material. The opening from 1l to 12 is 6o closed when the upper part of the body has been stuffed, and the stuiiing is completed by means of the opening 13-14: which is closed when the body has been completely stuffed.

The arms are sewed as indicated, stuffed, and then attached to the body at 17. The

ears 18, after the body has been turned, are Stitched at 18"t in order to give them a lifelike, distinctive appearance.

The principle of my invention is adapted to be applied to the construction of the bodies of animals, such as cats, dogs, and rabbits, birds, etc. In Figures 5, 6, 7, and 8 I have shown the construction of the head of a kitten, the body portion being shown broken away as the method of constructing the body of a doll is applicable to the construction of the body of an animal or bird.

The head of the kitten consists of top pieces 19 and 20, and side and bottom pieces 21 and 22. The ears are cut as parts of the four pieces constituting the head; the ear 23 is a part of the top piece 19 and the bottom piece 2l, while the ear 24 is a part of the 85 top piece 2O and the bottom piece 22. After the head has been sewed up and turned, the ears are stitched close to the head on the line 25. This construction results in the production of ears of correct shape and of proper proportions, and this method of forming ears is applicable to the construction of the ears or" any animal.

The material of the face, head, and other parts of the body of the doll or other toy may be stamped with fast colors or be otherwise colored to give a distinctive appearance to the particular toy. The manner of doing this is illustrated in Figures 5, 6, and 7.

Having described my invention, what I pieces, said front and back pieces having parts integral to form ears by stitching said parts at the edges thereof and also at the base thereof, and arm pieces each oomprisng a single piece.
