To all whomit may concern: 'Be it known that I, JAoonMArrsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain Doors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. 7
This invention relates to car doors and has special reference to improvements in what is commonly known as grain doors.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a better and more efficient door than those heretofore known.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the further description of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawing forming part of this application and in which like reference characters indicate like parts:
Figure 1 is an outside elevation of a fragmental portion of a box car, showing one of my improved doors as applied to the opening therein;
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view showing parts of the door structure in elevation and other parts in section for con veni'ence in illustration;
Figure 3 is an edge elevation of one of the line sheaves in the door post; and
Figure 4 is a fragmental illustration of the upper end of the reinforcing bar.
1 represents the door opening in the car which is surrounded by the floor 2, side posts 33, and lintel 4.
My improved door is preferably made of sheet metal and is illustrated at 5, the same being normally free from direct attachment to the surrounding walls of the door, though across the lower edge of the opening of the door and below the surface of the floor is installed a metal strip indicated at 6, form-v ing a slight depression or groove in which the lower edge of the door 5 rests when in position as a closure. This is to insure no grain getting by under. the lower edge of the door, as well as forming a desirable support for the entire lower edge of the door.
The door 5 is provided upon its outer face and adjacent the side edges thereof with guiding and upstanding angle-bars 7 which are permanently attached thereto. Part way down from the upper end of these angle-bars a piece 8 of the outwardly extending web of each angle-bar is cut and bent-inwardly, I andalso provided with ahole into which lift 7 V ropes 9 are attached. Theseropes eachlead upwardly over a sheave 10 let into the inner face of the door post 3 and covered, with a strap 11, from thence theropes lead down-H wardly through gas pipe guides12 through the floor of the car where one is wound around the winding drum 13 on the shaft 14 j ournalled beneath the car, and the other goes around the sheave, 15, then-longitudi-' nal'lyof-the car under the doorto -thedrum 13. and is wound with the other line; both being raised and lowered simultaneously. The shaft 14 is operated manually by a suitable crank 16 and said shaft is optionally held against backward rotation by a suit able pawl and ratchet wheel indicated at 17;

As is evident by this means the door may be raised or lowered into position as desired and the clips 8 and sheaves 10 are so positioned that the door may be conveniently raised approximately one-half its height where a Z -bar iron 18 is provided for a track for the door, said bar being rigidly fixed to the inner upper edge'of the lintel 4.
For engagement with this bar the door 5 is provided near each upper corner with an upstanding fiat metal hook member 19 which may be readily caused to overlap the Z-bar track by manual manipulation of thedoorv when it is raised to proper position for such purpose, and the door thus suspended on this track and slid'longitudinally of the door opening out of the way where it may be either housed or fastened in any desired manner. 3 7
As an additional provision for removalof the door I form in the'upward projecting portion of the Z-bar slots-.20 directly above the hooks 19. so that if preferred, and which maybe desirable at the initial opening of j the door before the load of the car is fully removed, the hooks 19 may be caused to ens gage the slots 20 and the door swung direct to the ceiling of the car where it may spaced the proper-distance to move the door laterally one width thereof, as it may be desired to slide the door into that position 7 which is indicated dotted lines at 22 befor the door, I employ a T-beam or iron 1n-.
