`PxrENi' OFFICE.
THOMAS C. HUTCHINSON, 0F DULUTH, MINNESOTA;
GRAIN-DOOR REMOVER.
Application filed Octobeii22, 1923.A Serial No. 669,911.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, THOMAS C. I-IUTGHIN- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented cer-y tain new and useful Improvements in Grain-Door Removers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to grain door removers and has special reference to that class of grain door used temporarilyrin railroad cars.
The principal object of the invention is to provide as simple means as possible for the ready and indestructible removal of such doors.
Other objects and advantages of the in vention will appear in the further description thereof.
Referring now to the accompanying Vdrawing forming part'of this application,
and in which like reference characters indieate like parts:
Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view through a grain car, located in position within an elevator for discharging its contents; and
Figure 2 is an enlarged broken perspective view of the principal element embodying the invention.
To those versed in the art, the difliculties encountered in removing the grain door of a car are well known, and howl that various means for assisting in the forcing inwardly of the body or sections of a grain door for the purpose of discharging the contents thereof have been heretofore resorted to, and my present invention relates to the use of a simple pushing beam or ram, manipulated in the most convenient manner possible.
In illustrating the embodiment of the invention, I have shown the floor of an elevator at 1, upon which the car tracks 2 are vin 'practice that if the sections of the door may be forced inwardly and upwardly much more desirable results are obtained and the destruction of the door avoided, and to accomplish this I provide a comparatively short pushing beam 8, preferably of wood, having pivotally installed at one end a roller 9 and in the opposite end a pivotally mounted door engaging shoe 10. For cooperative' actionV with this pushing beam I provide uprights or stanchions l1 preferably of angle iron, rigidly attached either to the corners of the elevator structures il, or rigidly supported in any other manner desired. These angles are installed so as to face the track, and are a distance from the grain door of a car thereon usually sheave 15 installed overhead, and power of any description may be applied to said line.
L'Ihus when the hook is applied to the eye 12, an upward draft upon the line will raise the innermost end of the beam 8, and, if the shoe 10 on the opposite end of the beam has been placed against the gra-in door of the car, it is obvious that the same will be forced inwardly and upwardly, effectively dislodging the same with the least effort possible on Ythe part of the man engaged in such work.
It is well known that in such installations, there Yis ample power available in the form of pulling lines, and trip ropes are employed for stopping and starting same, so that this feature does not form part of my present invention. Furthermore it is apparent that one or more stanchions 11 may be installed to accommodate the varied positions of the cars as the ram 8 may be readily placed into one or the other as circumstances may require, and various other modifications of the specific structure here shown may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described. my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A grain car door opening device' comable beam, having a door engaging shoey pivot-ally mounted in one end thereof and a stanchion roller at the other end for installation intermediate of the door and the stanchion,` and a line suspended from over head for vertically raising the s'tanchion end of the beam for the purpose described.
2. A car door removing device of the character-described comprising a V-shaped upright permanent stanchion spaced from the door of the car and a portable beam forv installation between the upright and the door of the car, said beam having a door engaging shoev pivotally mounted in one 'end thereof and a roller, for engage ment Within the V-shaped channel in the stanchion, in the other end thereof, and a hoisting rope suspended from above the stanchion end of the beam for raising saine for the purpose described.,
' In testimony whereof -I- hereunto affix my signature inthe presence of two Witnesses.
THOMAS C. HUTCHNSGN.
