Description
J. BRIZEE.
Permanent Faucets for Beer-Barrels N0.148-,40=7, Patented March10.1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT Orrnnii JOHN BRIZEE, OF ALVARADO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PERMANENT FAUCETS FOR BEER-BARRELS.
Specification forming part of LettersPate nt No. 145,407, dated March 10,1874; application filed January 7, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN BRIZEE, of Alvarado, Alameda county, State of California, have invented a Permanent Faucet for Beer- Casks; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention without further invention or experiment.
My invention relates to what I call a permanent faucet for beer and other casks which contain a liquid under pressure; and its object is to permit of the contents of the barrel orcask being drawn without the trouble of driving a faucet in the bung-hole by driving out the plug or bung at the risk of losing the liquid. My invention consists of a tap, which is so constructed that it can be secured in the head of a barrel or cask and remain permanently attached to it without being in the way.
A short bent tube or pipe is arranged with screw-threads at one end, so that it can be screwed into the tap when it is desired to draw the liquid, and which will serve as a faucet -tube for the liquid to pass through when the tap-plug is turned.
In order to more fully illustrate and explain my invention, reference is had to the accompanyin g drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device. Fig. 2 is a sectional view.
A represents a casting, which is provided with a short projecting tube, B, at one side. This tube is provided with screw-threads, so that it. can be screwed down into a hole in the head of a barrel or cask, and leave the casting A fitting closely down against the outside of the head. This casting A is not as high as the chimes of the barrel or cask, so that it will not interfere with the standing of the cask or barrel on end. A conical hole passes horizontally through this casting, parallel with the head of the cask, and in this hole is placed a tapering plug, 0, similar to the ordinary tapplug of a faucet, being secured at its small end by a nut, d, in the usual or any convenient way. In the outer face of the casting A is a hole, e, having interior screw-threads.
' This hole is in line with-the hole through the short tube B, which screws into the barre1= head on the opposite side of the casting. The tapering plug 0 passes directly across through the casting between these two holes, and is it self provided with a hole which will form a direct communication with the interior of the barrel when the plug is turned, so as to bring the holes in line; but when the plug is turned out of this position, the communication is closed in the same manner that'an ordinary faucet is operated. A bent tube, g, has one end provided with screw-threads, so that it can be screwed into the hole 6, and through which the liquid will flow.
This tube is removable so that it will not be in the way or interfere with standing the barrel on end. v
The plug 0 can be turned by a lever-handle, which may be either permanent or detachable. I prefer to provide it with a countersunk triangular end,- over which a smalltriangular wrench, k, can be fitted in order to turn the plug, and which can be detached when it is not needed for this purpose.
L is a cover, which is hinged to one corner of the casting, so that it can be shut down over its upper face and end when the tube 9 and wrench k are removed, and thus protect the openings from becoming filled with dirt.
By this means I provide a permanent faucet, which only needs the tube gto be screwed into it, and the tapering plug to be turned to draw the liquid, thus avoiding the trouble of driving in a faucet every time the barrel is tapped.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by lotters Patent, is
The casting A, with its short tube B, arranged to be permanently screwed into the barrel, said casting having a valve or plug, 0, and opening 6, and provided with a cover, L, in combination with the bent tube 9 and wrench k, or equivalent device, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
JOHN BRIZEE. n s.]
