STUMP-PULLING APPARATUS.
Application filed May 16, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD C. BRUNs, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Lacombe, in the county of Red Deer and Province of Alberta, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stump-Pulling Apparatus, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
The present invention relates to stump pulling apparatus and the principal object is to provide an apparatus of the character described, which is capable of maximum pulling power.
A further object is to provide a device for pulling stumps which may be readily transported and the mechanism thereof quickly adjusted after each pulling operation.
IVith thes and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
Figure 1 is a top plan View of the apparatus.
Figure 2 is a sectional elevation illustrating the apparatus attached to an anchor stump and the stump to be pulled.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the stop member embodied in my present invention and Figure 1 is a fragmentary detail taken on line 14l of Figure 1, illustrating the ratchet and pawl construction.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts, the numeral 6 inclicates the axle of the apparatus, on which are rotatably mounted the supporting wheels 7 and 8. The main pulley 9, formed with a relatively wide channel, is preferably keyed to the axle 6 and has the secondary pulleys l0 and 11 positioned on both sides thereof, which secondary pulleys are also fast upon the axle 6. The said secondary pulleys have formed on the outer ter minals thereof, the ratchets 12 and 13. Thenumerals 14 and 15 indicate pawls adapted for engagement with the said ratchets.
The numeral 16 indicates the cable which is wound around the main pulley, one end being connected to the same. The numerals 17 and 18 indicate cables wound around and connected to the secondary pulleys 10 and 11, the opposite terminals of which are con- Serial No. 561,489.
nected to the transverse bar 19 through the medium ofthe eyelets 20 and 21. Cable 22, more clearly shown in Figure 2, is connected to the eyelet 23 fixed to the transverse bar 19 and this cable is trained over the pulley 24: and is connected to the link 25. Mounted on this cable 22 is the stop member 43 for the purpose of restricting the movement of the cable 22. The numerals 26 and 27 indicate connection rods which are connected to the link 25 and to the members 28 and 29 on which the said pawls 14; and
15 are mounted. These members 28 and 29 are loosely positioned on the axle 6. The pulley 2 1 is rotatably positioned in the yoke 30, which is connected to the yoke 31 of the locking member. Pivoted on the outer terminals of the yoke 31 of the locking member are the blocks 32 and 33, loosely connected by the bar 34.
The cable 35, fastened to the stump to be pulled, passes intermediate the blocks 32 and 33 of the locking member and through the yoke 31 as illustrated.
The rods 36 and 37 are connected to the members 28 and 29 and to the transverse bar 38 through the medium of the eyelets 39 and 10. The numeral 41 indicates a cable which is connected to the anchor stump and to the transverse bar 38 through the medium of the eyelet 42.
In operation, cable 16 is pulled by draft animals or motive traction power. The main pulley 9, on which the cable 16 is wound, is revolved, simultaneously revolving the secondary pulleys 10 and 11, resultant that the cables 17 and 18 are wound around the said secondary pulleys. In the pulling operation, if the pull on the stump should be relaxed, the pawls 14: and 15 engage, with the ratchets 13 and 12 which would restrain the cables 17 and 18 in that position.
After the stump has been pulled, the main pulley 9 is revolved in a contrary direction to re-wind the cable 16 thereon. In this manner, the apparatus is moved from stump to stump.
In operation, it has been found that the distance between the stumps to be pulled varies to a considerable extent. To facilitate the adjustment of cable 35, I have illustrated locking mechanism hereinbefore described, which mechanism constitutes the yoke 31, the blocks 32 and 33 and the transverse bar 34. Cable 35 is positioned interlit) mediate blocks 82 and 33 and passes out through the side of the yoke 31. WVhen the cable 35 is properly adjusted, cable 22 is pulled, resultant of the pulling operation, which causes the blocks 32 and 33 to grip the cable lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction of my invention, I desire to have it understood that the same is merely illustrative and that deviations from such detail in the practical adaptation of the device for commercial purposes may be resorted to as do not form a departure from thesp-irit of the invention as defined by the appended claim.
What I claim as new is:
In a stump pulling apparatus, a pair of Wheels, an axle loosely mounted thereon, a main pulley Wheel fast on said axle, secondary pulleys on opposite sides of said main pulley and fast on the axle, ratchets on the secondary pulleys, pawls engaging said ratchets, members loosely mounted on said axle and carrying said pa-Wls, a cable Wound around and connected to the main pulley Wheel, cables Wound upon and connected to th secondary pulleys, a bar to which said last-named cables are attached, a yoke adapted to be connected to the stump to be pulled, a pulley rotatably mounted in said yoke, a cable reeved around the pulley and having one end connected to said bar and the other end connected to the members carrying said paWls, a cable adapted to be connected to an anchor, a bar to which it is connected, and rods connected to said bar and to the members carrying said paWls.
