Be it known that I, Josnrrr JOHNSON, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Sandon, in the county of Kootenay and Provinccof British Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVindlasses, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to hoisting appa *atus for mines or the like, and tln. principal object is to provide mechanism or the character described which may be transported from stope to stope in a mine, Cllh ing the excavation of the same.
A. further object ofthe invention is to provide a windlass in which the drum element is actuated through a chain arrangement with the operating shaft.
Another object is to provide a Windlass with extensions for supporting the same in inaccessible places throughout the mine.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangment of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

In mining operations, and more particularly during the exploration or development period, it is necessary to use hoisting apparatus of a more or less temporary character and heretofore, this type of apparatus has consisted of a frame work, which prechuled the movement of the same except upon the surface. During the development period of mining, it is necessary to crosscut and stope the mineral leads which is rendered di'llicult by reason of the bulk and weight of the ordinary apparatus for this purpose.
F or the obviation of this and other objections, Ihave provided a hoisting apparatus of a portable character, which may be transported from place to place, in the mine and supported in position for elevating the ore.
The apparatus embodies a frame, comprlsing the horizontal beams 5 and 6, which are connected at their ends by the transverse bars 7 and 8. position upon the frame, I provide the inner lui'acket bars 10 and 11, having their opposite ends 12 directed parallel to the longitudinal dimension of the bars 9. Bolts 13 and l t are passed through openings in the beams 5 and 6 and ends 12 of the bracket bars 10 and 11 and the lower ends 12 of the bars 10 and 11 are apertured for the reception of bolts 15 which pass through the vertical bars 9. Nuts 16 are arranged on bolts 13, let and 15 and when adjusted serve to hold, the bars 9 in position. The strap bars 17 are bent intermediate their length to form the angularly disposed portions 18 and 19. These strap bars 17 are attached at their central part 20, to thelower ends of the vertical bars 9 and 10 by the bolts 2i. The outer ends of the angularly disposed portions 18 and l9 extend in horizontal plane as at 22 and bolts 23, pass through the ends of the beams 5 and 6 and the ends 22 of the bars 1?. Nuts 24; are adjusted upon the bolts 23 and hold the strap bars 1'? upon the frame, to likewise support the vertical bars 9 and 10. Cross-bars 25 are connected to the frame at the ends thereof by the bolts and nuts 26 and 27 and further brace the frame.
Blocks 2? are secured to the horizontal beams 5 and 6 by the bolts 28 which likewise pass through the bearing plates 29 in which are journaled the shafts 80 and 31. A windless drum 32 and a sprocket 33 are keyed upon a shaft 31, while shaft carries a small sprocket and brake drum 35. A sprocket chain 36 is trained over sprockets 33 and and motion is transmitted to the Windlass drum 32 by a crank handle 37 attached to shaft 30.
In operation the apparatus is placed in position either across the mine shaft, 01' stops and the cable is wound upon the windlass drum 32, by actuating the crank handle 37. As the drive shaft 30 is actuated, the sprocket 34 is revolved, thus transmitting motion through chain 36, to sprocket 33 and shaft 31, on which the windlass drum 32 is mounted. A bucket or hoist is attached to the free end of the cable and will be elevated in the ordinary manner.
To provide for the automatic lowering of the bucket or hoist, I have provided as heretofore stated, a brake drum on shaft 30. A brake band 38 encompasses the drum 35 and is connected at its end to a clamp member 39 formed on the crank portion 40 of a lever 4:1, having pivot connection on a bolt 42 secured by a nut 43 to the beam 5 of the frame.
This lever e1, when lowered on its pivot connection 42 draws the band 38 against the brake spindle 35 and regulates the movement of the same.
A pair of hooks 44 and 45 have bolt connection 46 with the beams 5 and 6 of the frame and these hooks may be attached to the timber work of the mine for holding the said apparatus in various adjusted positions.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction of my invention will be clearly understood, and, therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
aving thus described the invention,\vhat I claim as new is A portable hoisting apparatus comprising a frame, a downwardly-curved hooked member secured at one end of the said frame for attaching it to a support, trussed depending bars at opposite sides of the frame, a Windlass drum, a sprocket wheel on the shaft thereof, a brake drum, its shaft, :1 sprocket wheel on the brake drum shaft, a sprocket chain connecting. said sprocket wheels, means cooperating with said brake drum for the automatic lowering of the hoist, said means embodying a brake band, a bell-crank lever pivoted on said frame, a clamp member carried by one arm of said lever and connected with said band, and means for rotating the brake drum to transmit motion to the Windlass drum.
