KAUFMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO TCK MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, `A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
LAVATORY FITTING. v
Application med August 4, 192i. serial No. 489,918.
To all whom z't'fmay concern:
Be it known that I, ToBIAs J. KAUFMAN, a citizen ofthe United States, residin at Chicago, in the county of Cook and i tate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lavatory Fittings, of which the following is a specification.I
My invention relates to that class of waste fittings for use in connection with plumbing fixtures in which means is provided for operation of the waste plug at a point other than from the inside of the basin, so that it is not necessary for user to reach into the dirty water to empty the basin.
The objects of my invention are to provide a suitable and substantial mechanism which is simple and positive in action and which does not depend upon stuffing boxes or Jfriction to hold the fixture in either an open or closed position A further object of my invention is to eliminate the ordinary stuffing boxes in the dischargeportion of the litting where leakage often occurs after the fitting has been used for some time.
Other objects of the invention will be made apparent in the following specifications, when considered in connection with the drawing forming a part thereof.
In said drawing the single figure is a fragmentary sectional detail, taken transversely of a basin fitted with my improved means for causing vertical reciprocation of u the waste plug.
Now referring specifically to thedrawing, A is a lavatory provided with the usual overliow passage B. An operating handle C, here shown as in the form of a knob, is secured to a vertically reciprocable rod D. It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the use of the knob handle C, as any other form of handle may be used, so long as it is adapted for utilization to vertically reciprocate the rod D.
The rod D extends vertically through the top slab of the lavatory A, behind the rear wall of the passage B, a suitable bushing E surrounding the rod and extending through the lavatory slab, being secured in position by a nut F, and washer G.
The lower end of the rod D carries a bushing H, provided with a rounded recess adapted to receive a ball K, and an apertured nut J is screwed on to said bushing H, and is provided with a rounded recess around said aperture, complementary to the A connecting rod L extends through the aperture'in the nut J, and is screw-threaded -into the ball K, The lower screw-threaded.y
end of said rod L extends throu h an'interiorly screw-threaded collar carried by an. arm M, pivotally secured at its lower end at M2 to a link and to a telescopic member O. A yoke P is made integral with. acollar Q, and the rear end of the link N is pivoted at R to the'outer end of said yoke.
An elongated sleeve S telescopically surrounds the member O, and. is provided with a rounded inner end S. A coiled spring T is held within the member 4O, and is oompressible by eachreciprocation of said member towards the closed end of the sleeve S. A diaphragm U is positioned in a peripheral groove around the sleeve S, and is se-v curely held in position by the collar Q, which clamps it against a casting V, formed integral with a coupling V', screw-threaded o-n to a sleeve V2, which extends into the waste aperture of the basin, and secured in position by bushings, as shown. The waste plug` X is adapted to a seat X', and is provided with elongated, laterally extending guiding iianges X2, which extend downwardly into the coupling V', and terminate in a ring X3. An outlet waste pipe Y is 'secured to the lower portion ofthe casting V.
A rod W is screw-threaded through; the end S' of the sleeve S. the outer end of said rod passing through the ring X3.
A collar Y', provided with a flange Y2, is screw-threaded on to the casting V and the collar Q, and holds' the latter and the yoke P in position.
It is to be noted that the inner peripheral edge of the collar Q is beveled, and that the casting V, where apertured to permit passage of the rounded end S', yis oppositely beveled around said aperture. This construction not only permits flexure of the diaphragm U, but the bevel in the castin V provides a bearing for the rounded en S' of the sleeve S.
The device is here shown with the plug X in its closed position, the s ring T tending to press the rod L upward y, and, therefore tending to hold the plugin closed position. If it is now desired to raise the IDI upward pull upon the handle C will be suf- O. When such pressure overcomes the pressure of the' spring T, the member O will slide further into the sleeve S, straightening the toggle joint and further compressing the spring T. Such straightening movement of the toggle, formed by the link N,
thememberl 0, and the sleeve S, causes the rod W to rise upwardly and raise the plug X, as will be obvious. In the raised position of the plug the spring T will be under great compression, which is exerted against' the pivotal point R, tending to hold the plug in its raised position. When it isdesiredto again lower the plug X, a slight ficient tov move the toggle out of itsstraight line, and the spring T will obviously cause the plug X to snap down into position.
Because of the screw-threaded connection between the lower end of the rod L and the collar M', it-.is obvious that the fitting is adapted for use with lavatories of varying dimensions between the supporting slab and the bottom of the bowl. By rotation of the rod L the collar M may .be moved vertically, thereby permitting installation of the fitting into any lavatory, as will be understood. j
Modifications of l the structure herein shown will be suggested to those skilled in the art, but my `invention covers all embodiments falling within the scope of the appended claims. l
I claim: 4'
