This invention relates to a device for sinks or the like to stop the flow of water throughthe drain outlet thereof to enable washing operation to be carried out, such as dishwashing operations, and said device also being operable to drain the sink ofthe liquid waste matter after the washing operations have been completed.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a device of the indicated character in the form of an accessory to be attached to a sink, or which may be applied thereto at the factory as a standard appurtenance, and which device will serve in conjunction with the drain outlet of thesink to 7 control the flow of waste to the end, that a full unobstructed flow without matter collecting or accumulating in the drain may be obtained, and which may be operated and/or drain the liquid or water quickly and easily, and which will enable cleaning operations to be easily carried out whenever necessary.
The nature of the invention and its distinguishing features and advantages will appear when the following specification is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a sink selected to illustrate the device of the present invention shown applied thereto, parts of the sink and device being shown in section;
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings, it will be apparent that the illustrated example of the invention is shown applied to a sink 10 having a drain outlet 11 held in place by a coupling or union 12 which establishes commu-' nication of the outlet 11 with the interior of the sink 10. The lower end of the outlet is received in a trap 13 of a conventional type which is connected with the sewage system. A strainer 14 is set in place over the inlet end of the drain. It will therefore be understood that there is formed a passage from the interior of the sink 10 downwardly through the trap 18 by which waste matter may be discharged from the sink.
The device of the present invention involves the drain or outlet 11, and in accordance with the invention it is provided with an extension 15 of tubularformation which is disposed laterally at a downward angle with respect to the outlet 11 in communication therewith. Theextension 15 is intendedto serve as a gulde for a globular valve member 16 and said extension is sufficiently large as to diameter and length to accommodate the valve member 16 so that it will be entirely clear of the passage in the outlet, leaving the same fully unobstructed. A seat 17 is arranged-on the inside of the outlet 11 below the extension 15. The seat is formed by making the outlet of reduced diameter below the extension 15, although the seat may be formed in any other practical manner. The seat 17 is so formed as to receive the valve member 16 thereon to stop or obstruct the outlet passage and enables the removal of the valve member and its withdrawal into the extension 15. In order to remove or withdraw the valve member 16 from the seat to allow. a free flow of waste matter through the outlet, and to retain the valve member 16 in the withdrawn position, there is provided means presently to be described. A rod 18 is slidably held by a stufling box 19 applied to the extension, and one end of the rod is connected to the valve member by a flexible element such as a chain 20, and the other end of the rod is connected with a bell crank lever 21. In the present instance, the lever 21 is positioned on an arm 22 held in place at one end by the coupling 12. In order to aid in retaining the arm 22 horizontally disposed, there is provided a set screw 23 or other suitable means which contacts with the sink. The lever 21 is connected with another lever 24 by a flexible. element or chain 25. The lever 24 is operatively positioned on the back of the sink and has a handle 26 for operating it. The lever 24 extends through a bushing 27 which is fixed to the back of the sink, and said bushing carries a stop 28. The lever 24 moves in contact with the stop 28 which brings the valve memberlG into its withdrawn position within the extension 15. A tension spring 29 has one end thereof connected with the lever 21 and its opposite end connects with the packing nut of the stufling box 19.
' When the arm 30 of the lever 24 is against the stop 28 it will be held thereby out of verticalalinement, as shown in Figure 2. The spring 29 will, be under tension while the valve member 16 will be off the seat 17 within the extension 15. By imparting a slight movement to the handle 26 the arm 3O-of the lever may be moved to a position in which the spring 29 will act to urge the lever 21 and its rod 18 in one direction thereby releasing the valve member 16 to the action of gravity whereupon it will move onto the seat 17 to obstruct the outlet passage.
It is to be understood that insteadof using the arm 22 to support the lever 21, the sink 10 maybe provided with a lug or lugs to operatively support the lever 21. It is also to be understood that any other equivalent means than that shown may be used for controlling the valve member 16,
Claim: 7 V The combination with a drain outlet, of a seat in the outlet, an inclined tubular extension in communication with the outlet above the seat, a gravity valve member arranged 5' within the extension and movable under its own weight on the seat to obstruct the outlet, and said extension being sufficiently large I to enable the valve member tobe withdrawn 1 from the seat into the extension clear of the 5' outlet, a rod, a stuffing box on said extension mounting the rod for axial movement, one end of the rod being connected with the valve member by flexible means, a lever connected with the other end of said rod, a spring con- *1 nected with said lever, and manipulatable means connected with said lever to operate it to withdraw the valve member into the extension through the intervention of said rod and flexible means, and also to retain said valve member within said extension, and
said spring serving to cause return movement of the lever and rod when the manipulatable meansis released, to allow the valve member to move onto said seat to. obstruct the outlet.
