PATENT OFFICE.
LAURENCE J. OSTDIEK, OF OTT UMWA, IOWA.
' A DESK 1 Application nled April 9, 1921. Serial No. 459,986.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAURENCE J. OSTDIEK, a citizen of the United States, residingat Ottumwa, in the county of Wapello and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Desks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a typewriter desk, the general object of the invention being to provide means whereby the entire top of the desk can be used as an ordinary desk when the typewriter is not being used and the desk is in closed position.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the typewriter is entirely enclosed, when not in use, so that it is protected from dust and dirt.
A further object of the invention is to provide a track and a wheeled base, upon which the typewriter is supported, so that the typewriter can be easily moved to its operative or inoperative position.
Another object of the invention is to so connect the base with the movable part of the top of the desk that the base will be moved by the swinging movement of said movable part.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or correspondig parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of a desk constructed in accordance with my invention, parts being broken away to show the interior construction.
Figure 2 is a plan view with parts broken away.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view through Figure 1.
As shown in these views the desk is of the flat top type having a vertical row of drawers at eachside thereof, as shown at 1, with the typewriter supporting means at the center between the rows, as shown at 2. Such means being so formed as to leave a space for the legs of the operator, as shown at 3.
A track 4 is arranged in the typewriter space 2, this track consisting of the horizontal end portions and a central inclined portion connecting the end portions together, the track extending from front to adjacent the rear of the desk as shown in Figure 3. A base board 5, upon which the typewriter is secured, is provided with wheels 6 which engage the track so that the typewriter can be moved along the! same, the portions of the track being so arranged that when the typewriter is at the front end of the same it will be in a position where it can be operated by a person sitting in front of the desk and when it has been pushed rearwardly upon the track it will occupy a position wholly within the desk. The cover 7 for the typewriter space is secured to the metal strips 8 which are pivotally supported intermediate their ends, as at 9, slots 10 being formed in the top of the desk with which the strips engage when the top is swung upwardly. The parts are so arranged that when the top or cover 7 is in closed position it will be flush with the stationary part of the top. The strips 8 are provided with right angular extensions 8 which are pivotally connected with the base board 5 by the links 11, these parts being so formed that as the top is swung upon its pivot the base board and typewriter will be moved along the track and when the top 7 is in closed position the extensions 8 will engage the rear or back of the desk and the part beyond the pivot 9 will engage the inner face of the rear part of the stationary top, links 11 being in a horizontal position at the bottom of the typewriter space.
A board 12 extends at substantially right angles from the inner face of top 7, this board being of such a length that it will engage the front end of the base board 5 when the parts are in closed position, thus forming a cover in front of the typewriter when the same is in its rear-most position. Pockets 13 are formed on this board by the strips 14 placed thereon, these pockets being adapted to receive paper and envelopes and the like. I also provide a copy holder which consists of a strip 15 hinged to strip 14 at its rear end and having a holder leaf 16 hinged to its front edge. This copy holder can be folded against strip 14, as shown, when not in use but when in use the strip 15 rests against the ledge 17 and board 12 with the holder 16 depending downwardly, as shown, so that the copy thereon can be readily seen by a person operating the typewriter.
Any desired means may be used for holding the copy-holder in its operative and inoperative positions and any desired form of copy-holder can be used in place of that shown.
I may so form the extensions 8 and the links 11 that when the top 7 is swung upwardly the pivotal point of links 11 with the extensions 8 will pass beyond a dead center and thus lockthe parts in open position so that force must be used to return the parts to closed position. Or if desired I may use a spring catch for holding the parts in open position.
From the above it Will be apparent that the typewriter can be moved into operative and inoperative positions by the operator without leaving his chair and when the'top 7 is in raised position the typewriter is in position to be operated upon. When the top 7 is in closed position-the typewriter is at the rear of the desk and is entirely enclosed and is thus protected from dust and dirt. When the top 7 is closed the entire top of the desk can be used and the typewriter space leaves plenty of room for the legs of the operator.
It is thought from the foregoing descrip- .make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, providd'that such changes fall Within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is The combination with a typewriter desk including a cover and a typewriter base board having means of connection with said cover so as to operate simultaneously therewith .upon movement of said cover, of a board'e'xtendin'g inwardly at an inclination from the inner's'i'de of the cover and being disposed in such a manner so'as toeng'age the base board when the cover is in closed position, strips rising from the inclined board and being arranged with relation to the inner side of the cover soas toform pockets adapted to receive stationary, a strip hingedly secured to the pocket strips, a ledge transversing the cover board in advance of the pocket strip and being adapted to elevate the hinged strip from the cover board and a holder leaf hingedly secured to the hinged strip as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
