L of my invention is to simplify and improve the bell ringing and line locking mechanism disclosed in the patent to Barr and Barney #1,447,639, granted March 6, 1923.

As appears from Fig. 1, the main frame of the typewriting machine to which my inven tion is shown as applied comprises side plates 1 which areconnected at the front by a U-shaped frame 2, the rear connection comprising 'a cross plate (not shown). Mounted above the main frame is a traveling carriage comprising an inclined perforated plate 3 provided at its top and bottom with grooved bars 1. Fixed to theend portions of the plate or bar 3, 4 are end lplates 5. The grooved bars 4 provide seats or runways for sets of antifriction rollers 6, the upper set eo-operating with a fixed track bar 7 secured to the upper end portion of an angular trough or bed plate 8 mounted on the frame plates 1. The bed plate 8 terminates forward in an upward extension formed with a grooved seat to provide a trackway that co-operates with the lower set of rollers 6. carriage 3-5 is a roller platen 10 with whose front face co-operate printing instrumentalities comprising type bars 11 which are normally supported on a rest member 12, said type bars each carrying two types. The set of type bars are pivoted on a common pivot wire 13 mounted on a shiftabley type bar support or segment 14. -The heel of each type bar is formed with a cam slot 1'5 which is engaged by a pin 16 projecting fromy a belll crank 17 which is one of a set pivoted on a wire 18 mounted on the rest 12. Links 19 connect the bell cranks 17 with angular levers 2O pivoted at y21 ina sub-frame 22 which is detachably secured to the main frame. Each lever 20` carries a pin 23 whichengages in a slot'24 formed in the rear of a key lever 25, the set of key rlevers extending forward and ybeing pivoted on fulcrum wires 26 in the sub-frame 22. Each key lever has a key cap 27 which when defpressed will operate through the described train of devices to swing the connected type bar into print-ing contact with the platen and the paper thereon. Mounted on the carriage is a feed rack 28 intermeshing with a feed pinion 29 supported loosely on a horizontal shaft 30 having bearings on the bed plate 8. Fixed tosaid shaft is a toothed escapement wheel 31 which carries a pawl (not shown) that normally meshes with the feed pinion 29 so that feed movements from the traveling carriage will be transmitted through the rack 28 and pinion 29 to the escapement wheel 31. The Icarriage is power driven, being connected to a spring drum 32 by a band 33 in such a way that the carriage is constantly urged leftward.
The escapement wheel 31 is adapted to control the carriage movements by escapement mechanism which need be only briefly described since preferably it is of the character disclosed in the patent to A. W. Smith No. 1,435,669, granted Nov. 14, 1922, said mechanism comprising three dogsmounted on a two-part rocker that is vibrated by the printing `keys so that two of the dogs will co-operate with the escapement wheel to cause'no-drop letter feeding movements of the carriage during returnstrokes ofsaid printing keys, the third dog being'operative by the space bar or key tocausefa reverse or full-drop Afeed of thecarriage. The dog rocker comprises a main part 34 and a secondary part 35 pivotedat 36't'o the part Said dog rocker has stationary pivots 37 on which it is swung transversely of the escapement wheel 31. Rigid with the rocker part 34 is a holding dog 39 normally lying forward of the plane of the escapement wheel, the stepping dog 40 being normally engaged with said wheel, said dog 40 being pivoted on the lrocker part 35. The third dog 43 is also pivoted to the rocker part and has its tooth 43a normally extending above the off-set portions of the teeth of the escapement wheel 31. The dogs and 43 are loosely confined between the parts 34 and 35 and are adapted to swing bodily with through contact faces 11n thereony which ccact with the front face of a curved universal bar 45 housed in a depression 46 in the rear of the type bar segment 14. The universal bar 45 is partof a frame comprising rearward extensions 47 pivotally connected at 48 with crank arms 49 projecting upward from a shaft 50 which also has a rearwardly extending crank arm 51. Said uni versal bar frame further comprises an arm .52 which extends rearward from the bar 45 and carries a contact device 53 co-operative with a contact screw 54 carried by the dog rocker, the construction being such that inboth lower and upper case positions to l which the universal bar shifts with the segment 14, the contact face 53 is adapted to engage with the screw 54. The arm 52 has a slotted lug 55 engaging a pin 56 on al crank arm 57 fixed to an axle 58 which also carries a crank arm 59 that is connected by a link 60 with the crank arm 51, the construction assisting to synchronize movements of the universal bar frame as a wholeA "lhe pivotal supports 50 and 58 of said trame are mounted on a bracket'member 61 to which the type bar segment 14 is secured, both elements being subject to case shifting movements. The universal bar frame is maintained in normal position by a spring 62. When one of the printing keys 27 is actuated the associate type bar is swung to operative position, causing its contact face 111 to act against the universal bar 45 and cause the contact device 53 acting aga-inst the screw 54 to operate the dog rocker 34, 35 and permit a letter space feeding movement of the carriage towardsthe left dur ing the return movement of the dog rocker.
The escapement is also operative from the space barlor key 63 of the machine without affecting the main rocker part 34. Said space bar isv mounted on arms 64 fixed to a rock shaft 65 from which a curved arm 66 extends rearward and terminates in a head 67 underlying the forward arm of a. lever 68 having a pivot 69, the rearward arm of said lever being operative on a shouldered arm 71 pivotally supported on the carrier part 35. When the space bar is. depressed, the arm 66 will be swung upward and the head 67 will actuate the lever 68 to cause its rear arm to press down on the shouldered arm 71 and swing the carrier part 35 on its pivot 36, thereby causing the stepping dog7 40 4to disengage from the escapement wheel and the third dog 43 to engage therewith. The construction is such that an escapement movement is thereby effected during the depression of the space bar. i
The trains of bell ringing and line locking devices are operative in the present instance from one or more stationary contact devices or frame stops which are mounted on a rectangular stop bar 73 arranged above the top of the stationary track bar 7. The stop bar is provided at its underside with a series of teeth 74 and is carried by arms 75 which extend rearward and bear on stationary pivot pins 77 mounted on ears 78 projecting from the bar 7. The bar 73 may be thrown back by hand on the pivots 77 or may be lifted by key operated devices hereinafter described, torelease the line lock.` Adjustably supported on the bar 73 are stop or contact devices, one only of such devices being herein shown andnuinbered 79. Said device is preferably of the general construction of the contact devices disclosed in the aforesaid Patent No. 1,447,639, and loosely embraces the bar 73, being formed with teeth which are spring pressed into engagement with the teeth 74. At its front side the device 79 is provided with a for wardly projecting lug or stop proper 8O having a straight vertical contact face 81 at its right-hand side and an inclined or cam face 82 at its under side. Said stop or contact 79--82 is adapted to co-operate with and actuate the bell ringing and line locking mechanism proper to which my present invention more particularly relates` and which will now be described. Secured to the middle portion of the upper carriage bar 4 at its front side as by screws 83 is a detachable plate or bracket member 84 which is pro-vided with projections or stop lugs 85 and 86. Pivoted to said bracket at 87 is an angular lever 88 which has an extension or stop portion 89. The lever 88 is mounted on the left-hand side of the bracket o-r support 84, and pivotedat 90 to said bracket at the right of the lever 88 is a second angular lever 91 which has a downwardly projecting extension 92 terminating in a curved end 93 that is adapted to co-operate witbl the stopping' portion 89 of the lever 88. An ear 94 projecting from the lever 91 above its pivot is forwardly bent and perforated to receive the h ook-like end of a draw spring 95, the opposite end of said spring being hooked over a pin 96 projecting from the lever 88 below its pivot 87. The draw spring connects the two levers and constantly tends to pull the upper arm of lever 91 towards the lower arm of lever 88. Said spring` normally maintains the two levers in the position shown in Fig. 4, the upper arm of the lever 88 contacting with the stopl 85 and the upper arm of the lever 91 contacting with the stop 86.
Both levers 88 and 91 are adapted to be actuated or turned on their pivots by the contact 79-82, the lever 88 being lirst actuated to operate the bell ringer or striker and the lever 91 being subsequently actuated to lock the line of writing. The two levers operate on the saine element or member successively, their effect being to move said element or member oppositely. In the present instance the oppositely actuated element is a. third lever or connector 97 which is bent at about midway of its length and is pivotally connected at its end portions with the lower arms ot the levers 88 and 91.`
The pivotal connection 98 with the lever 91 is a plain pivot, but in order to allow freedom of motion the lett-hand end portion of the lever or link 97 is slotted as indicated at 99 to co-operate with a headed pin or pivot 100 projecting *from the lower arm of the lever 88, thus providing a loose pivotal connection. Pivoted at 101 at the bend of the lever 97 is al roller or wheel 102 which runs in a channel bar or troughlike member 103. Said member extends lengthwise of the carriage behind the bar 3, 4 but has a stationary mounting so that as the carriage travels the roller 102 runs in the channel bar, the construction providing that the roller may act on or communicate movement. to the channel bar at any point in the carriage travel. The channel bar 103 is pivotally connected at 104 near its ends to t-he horizontally disposed arms of angular levers or bell cranks 105. These bell cranks as most clearly appears in. Fig. 3 are pivotally supported on shoulder screws 106 which are threaded into bosses or lugs 107 projecting forward from the front vertical face of the bed plate or trough 8. The downwardly extending arms of the bell cranks 105 carry shouldered pivot pins 109 which provide pivotal supports for the end portions of a` second bar 110, said bar being arranged below and parallel with the channel bar 103. lt will be observed that the bell cranks 105 perform the dual functions of supporting both bars 103 and 110 and also of providing connections between the two bars whereby motion may be transmitted from one to the other. Further, the bell cranks 105 and the bar 110 connecting them insure parallel movement of the bar 103. As hereinafter explained the roller 102 is adapted to move the channel bar 103 in opposite directions from its normal position or up and down, and it will be apparent that the up and down or transverse movements of the bar 103 will be so transmitted by the bell cranks 105 to the bar 110 that said bar 110 will be oppositely moved in a direction lengthwise of itself from its normal position.
The bar 110 is provided with oppositely facing lugs 111 and 112, the lug 111 operating whenever the bar is moved longitudinally rightward to actuate the bell ringer, while the lug 112 is adapted to operate the line lock, devices during a subsequent movement of the bar 110 in the opposite direction or towards the left. The lug 111 is adapted to engage with a pin 113 yprojecting forward `trom the upper end portion of an arm 114 which is suspended froma screw pivot 115 iiXed to the front of the vertical portion or the bed plate 8 near its righthand end, the arm 114 projecting downward through an opening 8"L in the bottom of the bed plate, said arm at its lower end carrying a head 116. This head projectsbackward from the arm and lies inside the rim of a bell 117 which is secured at 118 to a bracket or arm 119 that is fixed at its upper end by screws 120 to the rear face of the vertical part of the bed plate 8. Said arm 119 is oit-set as indicated at 119a to carry it outside the rim of the bell. The bell ringer or hammer 114, 116 is spring pressed, a draw spring 121 being hooked over the pin 113 at one end, the opposite end of said draw spring being anchored to a pin 122 projecting from the bed plate 8. The pin 122 also acts as a stop for the bell ringer or striker, serving to maintain the left-hand tace of a projection 114a from the arm 114 normally in contact with the pin 122 as shown in Fig. 4. It will be apparent that when bar 110 is moved longitudinally rightward the lug 111 acting against the pin 113 will swing the arm 114 rightward on its pivot 115, stretching the spring 121 and carrying the head 116 away from the rim of the bell 117 and that on suddenly releasing the bar 110 the spring 121 will become effective to swing or throw the arm 114 rapidly rightward and cause the head 116 to strike the rim and ring the bell.
When the bar 110 is actuated longitudinally towards the left the lug or projection 112 will actuate the line locking train, said train comprising a yoke piece or angular lever member 123 which is composed of a vertical portion 124 having parallel ears 125 and 126 bent horizontally forward from its top and bottom, and further comprisesr an off-set downwardly curved portieri 12T. The ears 125 and 126 are perforated to receive a pivot pin or bearing 128 which is 'vertically disposed and is secured at its ends in the top and bottom ears 129 and 130 of an angular bracket member which further comprises a vertical portion k131 and a horizontal portion 132. The top ear 129is bent oli' from the top of said vertical portion and the bottom ear 130 is olf-set leftward from the rear of said horizontal portion. At its front end said horizontal portion 132 terminates in a downwardly bent ear 13. The bracket comprising the parts numbered from 129 to 133 is supported on the bed plate 8 being arranged so that the portion 131 is secured to the` vertical front face of said bed plate by a yScrew 134, the lower portion of said bracketV passing through an opening in the bed plate and its bottom part 132 being secured tolthe under face of the bed plate by a screw135. The bracket ears 1.29'and 130 loosely embrace the 125 and 126 of the member 123 soit-hat said member may turn on the pivot pin 128 as a center When moved by reason of the pressure of the lug 112 against the ear 125 projecting forward across the path of the lug 112. The turning of the member' 123 on its pivot through the action of the lug 112 is effective to swing the arm or extension 127 forward about the pivotal axis 128. rEllis arm is perforated to receive the rear end of a slide rod 136 said slide rod passing at its forward end through and bearing in a hole in the ear 133. The slide rod is flattened, at 137, forward of the extension 127Y so that said extension engaging with the rear end of the flattened portion may slide the rod 136 forward and against the pressure of wire spring 138 coiled around the forward portion of the rod and confined between the.
ear 133 and the front end of the liattened portion 137.
The front end of the rod 136 is adapted to actuate a train of line locking devices which may and preferably does correspond with a train of mechanism disclosed in the aforesaid patent to Barr t Barney No. 1,447,639. Said train need but be briefly described herein, reference being had to the patent for a fuller and more complete disclosure. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 herein, said train includes a one-piece controlling member or stop preventer 139 comprising` an upright arm 14() rising from a horizontal cross portion 141 which terminates in forwardly bent ears 142. Carving forward from the cross portion 141 is a nger 143 having a side lug 144. The ears 142 are perforated to bear on a rod 145 which is supported on a ll-shaped bracket comprising a cross bar 146 and parallel arms 147 wlh terminate in ears 143 that receive ieaded screws 149 threaded into the member 61, the side arms 14? having bearing openings which receive the rod 145. The cross bar 146 has an upward extension 150 which acts as a stop for the member 139. The rear portion of said member is maintained in contact with the stop 150 by a coiled spring 151 anchored at its front end to a pin 152 projecting from the right-hand arm 14T, the rear end of said spring being hooked through a hole in the lug 144. `When thus maintained in normal position the linger 143 sustainsin inoperative position a pivoted gravity-operated stop 153 for the -.miversal bar. Said stop is in the form of a ll-shaped sheet metal frame comprising a cross portion 154 and downwardly extending sides 155 which loosely embrace the bracket arms 147 and are perforated to bear on the rod or shaft 145, the ends of said shaft being spread to prevent displacement. in extension 156 from the body portion 154 provides a stop proper. the forward edgek of which is adapted to co-operate with a 157 projecting upwarl from the arm of the universal bar frame. Said abutment is norn'ially maintained up out of the path of said lug but when released by the controlling frame 139 drops down through the force of gravity close behind the lug 15T so as substantially to prevent movement thereof. .it will be understood that when the slide or rod 136, 137 is pressed forward by the arm 12'?, said sl'de acting against J:he arm 140 of the member 139 will swing said member and cause the linger 143 to release the step member so that the stop 156 may block the stop 15.7, locking the line by preventing operation of the universal bar and the type bars. rho controlling frame 139 also controls the operation of a gravityoperated stop device or iembcr 153 for the space bar mechanism, which member coniprises a cross portion terminating in pintles 159 and having a downwardly extending linger 160 and an extension 161 which is arranged behind and is controlled by the linger or arm 140. llormally the finger 166 lies behind and ont of the path of a stop face 68a on the lever 68 but when the controlling member 13.() is rendered inopcratiifel as described, it permits the arm 166 to swing forward on pintles 159 until it overlies the stop face 63a, thus preventing operation of the lever 63 from the s ace bar frame thereby locking said space bar from operation.
Line lociring release mechanism is provided which is preferably of the character disclosed in the aforesaid Patent #1,447,639, said mechanism which is completely disclosed in said patent, comprising a finger 162 fined to and projecting rearward 'from the toothed stop bar 7 3 near the nasesoo left-hand end thereof. Said finger is controlled by a lever 163 pivoted to the bed plate 8 at 16A and provided at its upper arm with a cam slot for actuating the iinger 162, the lower arm of said lever likewise being formed with a cam slot which is engaged by an actuating pin (not shown) on a pivoted plate 165 which is adapted to be swung up by a slide rod 166 pivoted at its lower end to a lever 167 arranged in thek base of the machine and provided at its front end with a key 168. On depressing said key 168 the slide rod 166 is raised, swinging up the plate 165 and actuating the lever 163, causingit in turn to cam up the finger 162 and raise the stop bar and the stops. thereon about the pivotal axis 77, so that said stops or contacts will clear the co-operating traveling contacts on the carriage.
Referring now brieiiy to the operation of the line lock mechanism, and assuming that the carriage has traveled leftward to a point where the upper arm of the traveling contact or lever 88 will contact with the stop face 81 as shown in Fig. l1, it will be understood that further movement of the carriage towards the left will cause the lever 88 not only to travel bodily with the carriage but also to swing pivotally on its fulcrnm or pivot 87, the upper arm swinging towards the right and the lower arm upward and leftward until said lever assumes the position shown in Fig. 5. As the lower arm of the lever swings upward the pin 100 acting against the slotted left-hand end of the lever or connector 97 will swing said slotted end upward, the lever turning on the center 98 which will act ras a fulcrum and will remain fixed by reason of the co-operation between the stops or preventive means 89 and 93. The preventive action of these stops or interlocking devices will be best un derstood by a comparison of Figs. A and 5. In Fig. 4 it will be seen that the ends of the stop devices-are clear of each other so that either lever 88 or 91 is free to move on its fulcrum or center away from its limiting stop lug. As, however, the lever 88 begins to turn on its fulcrum 87 the stop 89 will swing leftward over the stop 93, thus pre-- venting any lifting movement of said stop, and consequently of the lever 91 of which it is a part. It may here be noted that the cam faces of the stops or interlocking devices 89 and 93 are curved in conformity with each other so as to permit relative crosswise movement of the parts, although these curved faces remain yquite close together. As a result of the leftward movement of the stop 89 to the Fig. 5 position and the consequent locking of the lever 91, the pivot 98 will be prevented from moving in one direction by the coacting sto vs 89 and 93 and from movement in the ot er direction. by
stop 86. The lever 97 thus swings up on a fixed axis 98 at its right-hand end, and so will lift the roller 102, raise the channel bar 103 and move the connected bar 110 longitu dinally riglitward, moving the bell striker or hammer away from the bell, as has been described. This movement will continue until theparts reach the position shown in Fig. 5. As leftward stepping movement of the carriage continues, however, the lever 88 will clear the lug or contact 80, permitting the bell ringing train to be restored to normal position by the springs 95 and 121, causing the bell to ring and thusnotifying the operator of the approach of the end of the line. Further leftward travel of the carriage will bring the lever 91 into Contact with the stop face 81 and will swing said lever on its fulcrum or axis 90 to the positionshown in Fig. 6. This swinging movement of the lever will cause a downward swinging movement of the lever 97 which this time will turn on the pin 100 as a cen ter or fulcrum. Said pin will be held fixed by reason of the coaction of the stops, 93 and 89, the stop 93 being swung up to the left of the stop 89, thus preventing leftward movement of said stop 89 about the center 87 and consequently fixing the lever 88 of which said stop 89 is a part since said lever cannot turn on its axis in either direction` movement in one direction being prevented by the coacting stops or interlocking devices 93 and 89 and movement in tlie other direction being prevented by the stop 85. Consequently, as has 'been stated, the lever 97 will swing downward in the opposite direction from its bell ringing movement and about a different center or fulcrum, this movement of the lever or connector 97 carrying downward with it the roller 102 and causing the channel bar 103 to move inthe opposite direction from its normal position or transversely downward. The downward movement of the channel bar will be transmitted through the bell cranks 105 to the bar 110 which will likewise be Loppositely moved from its normal position or longitudinally leftward, causing the lug 112 acte ing on the extension or arm 127 to 'swing the member 123 on its axis 128, the arm 127 of said member being thereby swung forward to push the slide or rod 136, 137 forward to actuate the universal bar stop and the space bar stop as has heretofore been described. It will further be observed that not only are the type bars and the space bar locked against actuation but the carriage of the machine is also arrested or limited by reason of the engagement of the stop 91 with the stationary or frame stop 8() as shown in Fig. 6. To release the line lock and the carriage in order to permit the addition of one or more characters as is sometimes desired, it is only necessary to depress the release key 168 thus causing the stop bar 73 to be swung upward as has been described and thereby raising the stop 80 to clear the path of the carriage stop. or lever 91. During return movements of the carriage the upper ends of the levers 91 and 88 will successively engage with the inclined or cam face 82 to cam up stop 79 and the stop bar 73 so as to permit the unobstructed rightward movement of the carriage to continue. t has not been thought necessary to shown the final line stop on the stop bar 73, nor the margin stop or stops on said bar for limiting the return movements of the carriage.
t will be noted that by my invention there is provided in combination with a traveling carriage, printing instrumentalities and a contact device or stop, line lock and bell ringing mechanism operative by said contact device and including an elementmovable in opposite directions from a single' normal position, movement of such element in one direction actuating the bell striker and movement in the other direction actuating the line lock devices to lock the line; that in the present instance said contact device or stop is mounted on the stationary part or frame of the machine while the directly eo-operating parts of the bell ringing and line lock mechanism are mounted on the traveling element or carriage; that the oppositely movable element is in the present instance a bar which is movable transversely of itself or up and down by a lever having a changing ulcrum, the upward movementl actuating the bell striker or ringer and the downward or opposite movement locking the line; that there is also provided a second bar which is also oppositely movable from a single normal position, said second bar being, however, movable longitudinally of itself instead of transversely, this longi` tudinal movement being affected by the connections between the two bars, said connections comprising a pair of bell cranks: that said connections or bell cranks not only connect the two elements or bars but also provide supports therefor, the first or trans-- versely movable bar being pivotallv sup yported on the horizontally disposed arms of the bell cranks while the longitudinal movable bar is pivoted on the vertical arms oi, the bell cranks, the construction being'l such that the transverse movements com municated to the irst bar cause or efect the longitudinal movements of the second bar; that said second bar is provided with a pair of projections or lugs, one for the bell ringing train of connections and the other for the line lock train; that the bell ringing and line lock mechanisms comprise two connected levers which are successively operative or movable on their ulcrums by a Contact device, means beingr provided for preventing operation of more than one ot said levers at a time; that said means comprise devices or stops, one on each lever, for preventing individual movement ot the other lever, the preventive stops functioning during the entire period of movement of the actuated lever, the construction-beingr such thatthe levers are adapted to interlock so as to prevent simultaneous movement; that the said levers are connected by spring means, in the present instance, a draw spring, that said levers are further connected by an element, connector, or third lever which is associated with meanswhich prevent it from transmitting movement from one of the first two levers to the other, while permitting said third lever to transmit movement from both the first two levers to the two connected bars above mentioned, the third lever having two inlcrums alternatively employed.
Various changes may be made without departing from my invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a traveling carriage, printing instrumentalities, a Contact device, and line lock and bell ringing mechanism operative therebyincluding an element movable in dii'terent directions from a single normal position, movement in one direction actuating the bell striker and movement in the other direction locking the line.
2. ln a typevfriting machine,` the rombination of a traveling carriage, printing instru mentalities, a contact device, and line lock and bell ringing mechanism operative thereby including a bar movable transversely in opposite directions from a central normal position, movement of the bar in one direction actuating the bell ringer and movement in the other direction locking the line.
3. ln a typewriting` machine. the combination of a traveling carriagel printing instrumentalities, a contact device, and line lock and bell ringing mechanism operative thereby including two bars both oppositelyv movable from normal positions, movement in one direction operating the bell ringer and movement in the opposite direction operating the line lock.

In a typewriting machine, the combination oi a traveling carriae. printing inarumentalities, contact device, and line ill lock and bell ringing mechanism operative thereby including two bars and connections between them whereby the transverse vmove-- ment ot one bar eilccts longitudinal movement of the second bar.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a traveling carriage, printing instrunientalities, a contact device and line lock and bell ringing mechanism operative thereby including two bars and connections between them whereby the transverse movement of one bar effects a longitudinal movement ot the second bar, said second bar moving in one direction from normal position to actuate the bell striker and moving in the opposite direction from normal position to lock the line.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a traveling carriage, printing instrumentalities, a contact device, and line loc-k and bell ringing mechanism operative thereby including two bars and connections between them whereby the transverse movement of one bar eiects a longitudinal movement of the second bar, said second bar being provided with a pair of lugs, one lug to actuate the bell ringer and the other to lock the line.

In a typewriting machine, the combination ot a traveling carriage, printing instrumentalities, a contact device, and line lock and bell ringing mechanism operative thereby including two bars and connections between them whereby the transverse movement ot one bar effects a longitudinal movement ot the second bar, said connections also 'serving as supports for both of the bars.
8.In a typewriting machine, the combination of a traveling carriage, printing instrumentalities, a contact device, and line lock and bell ringing mechanism operative thereby including two bars and connections between them whereby the transverse movement ot one bar effects a longitudinal movementy ot the second bar, said connections between the two bars comprising bell c-ranks which serve both to transmit movement from one bar to the other and also to support the two bars. f
9. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a traveling carriage, printing instrumentalities, a contact device, and'line lock and bell ringing mechanism operative thereby including a bar, a pair of bell cranks, each having a horizontally disposed arm and a vertically disposed arm, said bar being pivotally supported by the horizontal arms ot said bell cranks, a second bar pivotally supported by the vertical arms ot said bell cranks, a bell striker operative by said second bar, and a line lock stop also operative by said second bar.
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a traveling carriage, printing instrumentalities, a universal bar, esca-pement devices, a Contact device, two co-operating contact devices, a channel bar, a connector` between said bar and two of said contact dcvices, a roller on said connector engaging in said channel bar, a bell striker operative from said channel bar, and a line lock stop operative from said channel bar.
11. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a traveling carriage, printing instrumentalities, a contact device, and line lock and bell ringing mechanism operative thereby including two bars, connections between them whereby the transverse movement of one bar etl'ects a longitudinal movement of the second bar, a pair ot lugs on said second bar, a spring pressed striker operative by one lug, a bell with which said striker coacts, and line lock devices operative by the other of said lugs.
12. In a typewriting machine, the combination ot a traveling carriage, printing instrumentalities, a contact device, and line lock and bell ringing mechanism operative thereby including two connected bars, one provided with lugs, a spring pressed bell striker` operative by one of said lugs, a bell crank operative by the other of said lugs, a spring pressed slide. and a line lock stop controlled from said slide.
13. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a traveling carriage, printing instrumentalities, a universal bar operative thereby, a space bar, escapement devices operative by said universal bar and said space bar, a contact device, and line lock and bell ringing mechanism operative thereby including two bars, connections between them whereby the transverse movement ot one bar effects a longitudinal movement of the second bar, a pair of lugs on said second bar, a spring pressed striker operative by one lug, a bell with which said striker coacts, a bell crank operative by the second of said lugs, a spring pressed slide actuated by said bell crank, a universal bar stop controlled by said slide. and a space bar stop also controlled by said slide.

In a typewriting machine, the combination ot' a traveling carriage, printing instrumentalities, a universal bar operative thereby, a space bar, escapement devices operative by said universal bar and said space bar, a contact device, two bars. connections between them whereby the transverse movement of one bar eiiects a longitudinal movement ot the second bar, a pair or lugs on said second bar, a spring pressed bell striker operative by one lug, a bell crank operative by the second of said lugs, a spring pressed slide actuated by said crank, a pivoted member operated by said slide, and a pivoted stop for said universal bar controlled by said pivoted member.
