RING-ROLLING MACHINE.
Application filed June 22, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Goovrmvnnn G. BRowNE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Winchester, in the county of Cheshire and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ring-Rolling Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to machines for rolling metal rings and has for its principal objects to devise a machine that will roll rings of various sectional shapes. that will roll. rings free from tins and fiashings, that will form rings of the exact size and cross-sectional shape desired and that will produce rings of excellent quality.
The invention consists principally in a ring rolling machine in which one of two cooperating forming rolls is mechanically fed transversely of the other during the rolling operation; it also consists in a ring rolling machine provided with means for adjusting the angular relations of the forming rolls to each other; it also consists in a ring rolling machine whose cooperating rolls contact with each other in two planes throughout the rolling operation; and it also consists in the parts and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

Fig. 5 is a detail view of the plate on which the swivel head that supports one of the forming rolls is mounted.
Mounted on a suitable base 1 is an electric rovided with a pinion 4 at one end'and a evel or other gear 5 at the other end. The pinion 4 meshes with a gear 6 secured on a spindle 7 that is journaled in suitable bearings 8 providedtherefor in a housing 9. The spindle housing 9 is mounted on a carrier or frame 10 that is slidably mounted in ways provided therefor in the frame of the machine or in a suitable guide block on said frame. These cylinders 13 or fluid chambers are suitably connected with a source of air or fluid pressure to be actuated thereby. The spindle carrier is moved backward or forward by the pressure of air or other fluid under pressure admitted into .one or theother of said cylinders 13 and thus causing endwise movement of the plunger rod 12 which carries with it 'the i and spindle 7.

Preferably the mounting plate is recessed to receive the end of the forming roll 15 and said forming roll is detachably secured to the mounting plate 14 by screws 16 or the like.
Disposed on a slide-way 17 transverse to the axis of the forniingroll spindle 7 is a bed plate 18 on which is mounted a swivel head 19 that is provided with suitable journal bearings 20 for a second spindle 21 on the end of which is removably mounted a forming roll 22 to cooperate with the first forming roll 15. V The bed plate 18 is provided with a downwardly projecting portion having a threaded hole therethrough, through which passes a feed screw 24 that is journaled in the frame of the machine andprojects therei from at one end. The prO ecting end of the feed screw 24. is provided with change speed and reverse gear mechanism 25 that is driven by a. gear :26 on the end of a counterslmft 3,7. This countehshaft 27 has a bevel gear 28 at its other end that meshes with the bevel gear 5 on the end of the motor shaft 3. As the feed screw 24 and theforming roll 15 are driven from thesameinotor, the ratio between the feed of the; screw and the veloc ity of rotation of the roll is constant for any particular setting of the change speed gear mechanism. 1

The swivel head 19 is secured in position by drawing up the bolts 30 tight against the sides efthe annular channel; and by loosening said bolts 30, the swivel head 19 may be rotated on said centering projection to any desired position. It is obvious that numerous changes may be made without departing fromcmy invention and I do not Wish to be limited to the precise construction shown.

4. A ring rollin'g machine, comprising a 6 rotatably mounted forming roll, a swivel head adjacent to said forming roll, a second forming roll rotatably mounted in said swivel head to cooperate with said first forming roll, means for moving said swivel head bodily so as to feed said second forming roll 10 transversely of said first forming roll, and means for rotating said first forming roll, said feed means and said rotating means having a common source of power.
