C. S. BARON LIQUID CONTAINER AND TOP Filed Feb. 27 1923 till Patented Feb. 5,
CHARLES S.
LIQUID CONTAINER AND TOP.
Application filed February To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. BARON, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Tiflin, in the county of Seneca, in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Liquid Containers and Tops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
My present invention relates to that class of liquid containers that are provided with sanitary tops for keeping them closed against intrusion of dust or insects, and which are exemplified in molasses jugs.
The object of my invention is to simplify and improve the eff ciency and to cheapen the cost of manufacture of the type of device shown, for example and comparison only, in United States Patent No. 1,195,4c34, granted to me under date of August 22, 1916.
In that type the jug is provided with a bead, and the top thereof comprises, in combination with a hinged lid, a spring metal clip having formedin it a rib adapted to engage and hold the bead when the clip is sprung into place on the jug.
By my invention an inturned flange upon the clip is provided in connection with or as a substitute for the rib shown in said patent, a channel in the jug being provided for the reception of said flange.
The advantages gained by my present invention over the prior art illustrated in said patent are definite and important in at least three particulars. In the first place, the employment of an inturned flange affords in itself a smooth attractive and protective finish to the lower edge of the clip in place of the raw edge thereof shown in the patent.
In the second place, the inturning of the flange effects between the jug and the clip, when the flange is used without the bead aforesaid, the advantage of a knifeedge joint which eliminates certain inequalities which in the ordinary or practicable meth ods of manufacture of rib and bead, necessarily present themselves upon the con tacting surfaces of the parts. In the third place, the combination of both the bead and the flange, as shown for example in Figure VII, affords, along with the protective finish of the flange, a decided advantage by increase of the stiffness and resiliency of the clip.
What constitutes my invention will be M, less. Eerial No. 621,574.
hereinafter specified in detail and succinctly set forth in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure I is a medial vertical section, partly in elevation, of the upper portion of a jug and its closed top, showing my invention in one form of embodiment.
Figure II is a perspective View of the inside of the clip shown in Figure I, de tached.
Figure is a view substantially corresponding to Figure II, but showing certain modifications of the clip.
Figure IV is an elevation of a portion of the clip showin a different method of forum ing lugs on the clip for hinging the top thereto.
Figure V is a side elevation of the subject matter of Figure I, portions of the top and of the jug being broken away, and showing by way of modification, a slight addition.
Figure VI is a detail vertical section 02": the clip on the line VI-VI of Figure III, and showing also a fragment of'a jug to which said clip is attached.
Figure VII is a partial view similar to Figure II showing the combination in one clip of a flange and a bead cooperative to secure the clip to the jug.
Referring to the numerals on the drawing, 1 indicates the upper portion of a container or jug which may be made of any suitable material, usually glass. It may be of any usual or preferred shape, which ordinarily includes a neck 2 that is for the most part substantially cylindrical, and a spout 3. 4 indicates a lid that is adapted, in any usual or preferred manner, to constitute a movable coverfor the jug. For securing the lid to the jug, I employ a gring metal clip 5 which, when in place, afiords a fixed support for the lid which is hinged to it.
The method of hhging the lid and the clip together is immaterial. That shown at 6 in Figure II of the drawing is the same as what is shown in the patent aforesaid, but it may be varied at discretion in many different ways, as, for example, by the employ ment of lugs 7 punched from the body of the clip, as illustrated in Figures III and IV.
To the rear of the hinge connection, whatever be its form and relative disposition in respect to the clip and the movable portion of the lid, I provide the usual thumb-piece 8, by whose depression. the movable part of the lid may be lifted to uncover the mouth of thejug as often as it is desired to pour out the contents thereof.
So much having been set forth by way of general explanation, it is in order to specify that my present invention is restricted to means for uniting the jug and the clip. In respect to the clip which I have already de scribed as made of spring metal, it may be added by way of further description. that it is made in the form of a plate shaped to conform to the outside periphery of the neck 2, and of. a length suflicient to enable it by its'resiliency snugly togrip and hold the neck when applied thereto, but with a yielding force which will permit of its being conveniently disengaged therefrom as often as occasion may demand, as, for example, in the operation of washing the jug.
The clip is provided on its lower edge with an inturned flange 9 which preferably eiitends the entire length of the clip and is of a width sufiicientto enable it to findthe bottom of a groove or channel 10 formed in the outside wall of the neck 2, and to effect therewith a knife-edge joint. By this means the clip is made to present a finished curved surface or bend 11 in the metal where it is exposed to sight or to touch in the assembled article, with the effect of pleasing the eye and protecting the hand from being scratched upon coming in contact with an exposed edge of rough metal which is necessarily present in an article made to meet the demandsof cheapness'of manufacture, but whichis, by my invention, covered up.
Thewidth of the clip 5, in relationship to the'disposition of the groove lOis such as to bringthe upper edgeofit substantially fiush with the mouth of the jug when its lower flanged edge is in engagement with said groove. Also the length of the groove may correspond with that of the clip so as to afford anchorage of the clip in the groove against rotative movement of the clip on the jug neck. If preferred however, additional means to that end may be provided by the employment of vertical grooves 12 at the end of the groove 10, into which take inturned terminal {flanges let on the clip, thereby affording a finish for the ends of the clip similar to theben d 11 on the lower edge thereof.
If desired the flange 9 may be in efi'ect aeavaa mutilated by providing instead of one con tinuous flange a plurality of inturned projections 15 which take into recesses 16 provided in place of asingle groove 10 at proper intervals inthe outside of the neck 2. [in this way the effect of the bend 11 may be preserved by forming the inner edge of the inturned flange substantially flush with the inner face of the clip 5, the engagement between the members 15 and 16 being relied upon to hold the clip upon the neck 2.
For some purposes, it maybe desirable to provide the clip both with the flange 9 and with a bead 1.7, substantially as shown, for example, in the patent aforesaid. Such com-- bination of bead and flange produces a very strong clip, having great stiffness and re siliency. The employment of the combination of head andefiange requires, of course, upon thejug a rib for the accommodation of the head as well as a channel 10, parallel thereto, for the reception of the flange.
Illustration herein of the well known rib is deemed to be unnecessary, in addition to that of the bead.
It is obviously immaterial whether the bead project outwardlyfrom the clip to fit a rib on the jug, or inwardly so as to enter a groove in the jug.
The operation of the parts and the mode of uniting and separating them will be apparent to one skilled in the art from the foregoing description.
What I claim is: V
A device of the class described comprising in combination, a container provided with a narrow groove in itsouter surface spaced from its m011th, a flat segmental band of spring metal forming a clip partially encircling and gripping said container without covering any portion of the mouth there of, said band having its lower edge inturned to form a flange closely fitting into said groove, ears projecting from said band, and a lid pivotallyconnectedto said ears.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES s. BARON.
