To aliwwm t may com/cem:
Be it lmovvn that l, Wimmer N. Momes,
a subject oi the King of Great Britain, and
e citizen of Australie, residing et Waterloo in the county oi 4Blackhawk end Stateo lovva., have invented certain new and useful lim rovements in Fire Extinguishers, oi
which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to fire extinguishers, und has for its object the production oi e simple und etiicient extinguisher, which will explode when thrown into s re, or when the sume is ignited, thereby spreedf ing the extinguishing chemical over a wide it uren.
Another object of this invention is the production of u simple and efiicient means for conteining extinguishing, chemical in such a manner es to canse the chemical to be nutometicelly spread over s, dre, when brought in contact with fire.
@ther objects-and advantages or the invention will eppeer throughout the following specidcetion und cleim.
ln the druwingsr. A
.' The gure is o vertical "sectional view through the nre extinguisher.
By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that l designutesthe casing, which is rovided with on open bottom and o temo ing-top 2. rlhe casing l is preferably mede of strong peper chemically treated to insure' against dumpness udecting the contents oi the casing, und also for reinforcing the ex lt should be understood. of course, that the casing may be made of any suitable material, without departing from the ,spirit of the invention. A metal cap 3 lits over the bottom of the casing 1 and is .4o `secured thereto, the same constituting a closure for the vcasingand also strengthening the lower end thereof., A metal handle 4 is secured to the lower end of the csp' 3 to facilitate the carrying of the extinguisher.
The handle 4 may ,be hung over a suitablesupport, such as e hook, ior supporting the device in u convenient piece.
cartridge 5., containing explosive chemicals d, is tted in the center ci the container i* or container casing l, end carries e inse 7 having diverging ends 8. PEhe upper end o the inse 7 extends through the rotector' tube 9, which tube extends control y ott the tapering end 2 ot the casing l, und protects the fuse vfrom the extinguishinw chemicals 10, which ere mounted or ached in the con.- tniner 1 uround ,the certrige 5. 'ihe fuse 7 extendsV beyond the tapering end 2 of the casing i und may be-.either lighted before being thrown on the fire, or may be lighted by the fire, in which the same is thrown.
From the foregoingdescription, it will be seen that e very ecient means has been roduced tor facilitating the spreading of re extinguishin chemicel over n wide urea, through the exp osion of u rtridge mount ed in o conteiner carrying u. lire extinguishing chemicel. llt is not desired to limit the present invention to eny porticulorchemicsl used therewith, end it should be understood that ycertnin detail mechanical changes may he employed without departing from the sirit oi VAthe invention, so long us these c tion und cleini.
Whet 'is clnimed is:
enges dell within the following speci'ca- Y As e new erticle of manufacture, a fire extinguisher comprising on exterior casing termed of etid peper treeted to resist dampness including a cylindrical side wall and u conicel closure extension formed on the iorwnrd end oi the side wall, a rigid metal cnpisecured to the rear end of the side wall noting es n closure for the easing, e handle secured to seid rigid metal csp.. an axially disposed longitudinally arranged cartridge positioned in the casing in spucedfrelaton to the side well, the conical extension and the metal can. a protectingv tube extending forwardly from the cartridge to the vertex 'of tbe conical extension, and a fuse disposed in the tube and' communicating with the cartridge and extending exteriorly of the casing at the vertex portion of said conical extension. 1
