C. B. HAND COLLAR BUTTON Filed' Feb. 2 1923 IN VENTO/B C/arenca 3. Hand Patented Jan. 29, 1924,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
COLLAR BUTTON.
Application filed February 28, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE B. HAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maplevvood, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in collar buttons, and it consists in the novel details of construction more fully set forth in the specification and pointed out in the claim.
The object of the present invention is to provide a collar button with a detachable head which carries a pin, or hook, on which a necktie may be fastened. Further advantages will be better apparent from a detailed description of the invention in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved collar button inserted through the holes in the shirt band ends and collar flaps, the hook on the button holding a tie in place; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the collar button looking down on the head; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the collar button taken on the line 3-3 of Fi 2.
Referring to the drawings, 6 represents my improved collar button passed through the button holes in the ends a, a of the shirt band and flaps b, b of the collar 0 to hold them in place. The collar button C coinprises a stem 1 and a head 2, the stem 1 terminating in a disc 3 at one end and in a short laterally bent leg 4 at the other end, and the head comprising two flanged components 5 and 6 secured together to form a hollow disc. The flange 7 of the head component 5 is provided with an opening 0 at the base of said flange, and a pin, or hook, 8 has its shank 9 inserted through said opening with its end resting on the flange 10 of component 6 at the opposite side of the head. The shank is bent upon itself (Fig. 2), the bent end also bearing against the flange 7 of component 5 and bentover mem- Serial No. 621.786.
her 9' of the shank terminating in a toe 9 which bears against the flange 7 at the opposite side. The shank 9 is made of spring metal and is bow-shaped thus constituting a flexed spring within the head 2. The head component 6 is provided with a central opening 11 and an inwardly extending depression 12 communicating with said opening.
When the collar button is in use the stem 1 is received in the opening 11, with the leg 4 in contact with the'inner face of component 6, the spring shank 9 bearing down on said leg and holding the stem in place. In order to either remove or to put on the collar, it is necessary to detach the heat 2 from the stem 1, which may be done by simply tilting the head 2 as shown dotted in Fig. 3, whereupon the leg 4 may be slipped out of the opening 11 by moving it laterally into depression 12. After the stem 1 is inserted through the collar button holes it is a comparatively simple task to secure the head 2 to the stem 1 by tilting the head and passing the leg 4 through the depression 12 until the stem 1 enters the opening 11, after which the spring shank 9 will hold the stem in place. A necktie N (shown in Fig. 1) may be hooked onto the pin 8, after the button C is in place, and thus securely held in place without the necessity of passing it around the collar, the advantage of which is that tied ties may be used, although the pin will also hold four-inhandsi and prevent them from slipping down and exposing the button.
Having described my invention, I claim: A collar button comprising a stem and a hollow head detachable therefrom, said head being provided with an opening adapted to receive one end of the stem, and a hook provided with a spring shank secured in the head and adaptedto bear against the end of the stem received in opening in the head. In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
CLARENCE B. HAND.
