STAKE SOCKET.
Application filed March 26, 1823.
To all whom it may conccm:
Be it known that I, HORACE E. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Athens, in the county of Clarke and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsv in Stake, Sockets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sockets for securing stakes to the body portions of wagons and other similar vehicles; and it consists of a socket formed of a single piece of thin sheet metal, and bent to form, and provided with lugs and projections as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a stake socket constructed according to this invention and showing a portion of the wagon body in section. Fig. 2 is a front view; Fig. 8 is a rear view; and F 1g. 4 1s a plan view of the stake socket. Fig. 5 is a view of the blank from which the stake socket is formed.
The wagon body is of any approved construction, and it has a side portion 7. The
socket is formed of a single piece of thin sheet metal which is cut to form av blank 8 of the required shape and size. This blank 8 is shown in Fig. 5, and the dotted lines indicate where it is subsequently bent or folded. The middle portion of the blank forms the front 9 of a tapering pocket 10 adapted to receive the lower end portion of a wagon stake. The sides 12 of the pocket are bent at a right angle to its front. The end portions of the blank are each divided into two by a horizontal slit 14-. The upper parts 15 of these two portions are bent out wardly at a right angle to the sides 12, and form lugs for securing the socket to the side of the wagon. The lugs 15 have holes 16 for fastening screws 17. j
The lower parts of the end portions of the blank are each bent into three parts 18, 19 and 20. The parts 18 are bent inwardly at a right angle to the sides 12.
The parts 18 are relatively narrow in proportion to the width of the front of the pocket, and they form the lower part of the back of the pocket 10 for the stake. The parts 19 are bent rearwardly, and are in- Serial No. 627,782.
clined towards each other, so that they form lugs which are arranged at an acute angle to each other, and the parts 20 are bent parallel to the sides, and are secured together by welding or by a rivet 21. The lower portions of the parts 19 and 20 are preferably cut away to any preferred outline, and the parts 19 may be straight or curved as preferred.
The top edges 22 of the parts 19 and 20 are arranged to bear against the underside of the side portion 7 of the wagon body, and they assist in holding the stake socket in place, as they resist the outward pressure on the upper part of the wagon stake which tends to separate the fastening lugs from the wagon body. The upper part of the back of the pocket 10' is closed by the side portion 7 of the wagon body, and the back parts 18 are arranged in the same vertical plane with the side surface of the portion 7.
What I claim is:
1. A stake socket formed of a single piece of sheet metal and comprising a rectangular pocket for the stake having back parts which project inwardly towards each other from the lower parts of its sides and which have rearwardly projecting lugs on their adjacent edges, said lugs being adapted to bear against the underside of a wagon body, and fastening lugs which project outwardly from the upper parts of the sides of the pocket.
2. A stake socket formed of a single piece of sheet metal and comprising a rectangular pocket for the stake having back parts which project inwardly towards each other from the lower parts ofits sides and which have rearwardly projecting lugs on their adjacent edges, said lugs being adapted to bear against the underside of a wagon body and being arranged at an acute angle to each other and having their free ends secured together, and fastening lugs which project outwardly from the upper parts of the sides of the pocket.
