FLAME SPREADER..
Application tiled December 28, 1922. Serial No. 609,4215.
To all '1o/1.0m t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. Bolton, a citizen of the United States, residing at J ackson, in the county of Jackson and State of 5 Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flame Spreaders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inv i the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. l
My invention relates to improvements in flame spreaders for liquid fuel burners having an annular wick and an air supply tube within the wick, the objectbeing to provide a spreader of novel form for supplying an abundance of air to the flame, producing` better combustion and consequently greater eiiiciency than can be obtained without such supply of air. Y
lWith the foregoing in View, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanytion showing a burner equipped with my invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of one of the cup-shaped spreading members of which the llame spreader of Fig. l is constructed. t
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the member disclosed in Fig. 2.
g5 Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view showing a different form of construction.
l. have illustrated my invention in connection with a 'burner having wick guiding sleeves l, an air feeding wall 2 spaced outwardly from said sleeves, and an air Vsupply tube 3 spaced inwardly from said sleeves. The spreader shown in this figure and illustrated partially in Figs. 2and 3, includes a lower cup-shaped spreading member 4 having a substantially vertical side wall whose upper portion extends outwardly to provide a peripheral flange 6 which preferably inclines from its inner edge to its outer edge. Adjacent its lower edge, the wall 5 is preferably reduced to provide a shoulder? adapted to rest upon the flanged upper end of the tube 3, being provided with outwardly stamped lugs 8 for Figure l is a side elevation partly in sec-r engagement with the lower side of the flange of said tube, for the purpose of holding the spreader in place. Y
rllhe bottom of the spreading member 4 is stamped upwardly at its center to support an inner cup-like spreading member l0, the two members being connected with each other by a bolt or other fastener ll. The side wall of the member l0 although substantially vertical, preferably flares upwardly and is provided at'its upper edge with an outwardly inclined peripheral ilangelQ which is spaced above the flange 6, the two flanges being preferably of the same diameter.
rEhe bottom of the member 4 is provided with a plurality of air inlet perforations 13. rilhese perforations serve to conductair into the space between the two members 4 and l0, from the tube 3 and thus the flanges 6 and l2 of said members will supply this air to the surrounding flame from the wick, producing perfect combustion and high heating efliciency.
In the construction shown in Fig. 4, I have employ/ed a greater number of 'spreading members, each of which is preferably formed with a substantially vertical side wall 5a and with an outstanding peripheral Aflange Gwhich inclines outwardly, these flanges being in closer relation with each other than the flanges 6 and l2 above described. The botton'is of all of the. spreading` members in Fig. 4, except the uppermost, are formed with air inlet perforations 13a, whereby air will be supplied to the space between adjacent members, so that the latter will direct this air to the surrounding flame. While the spreading members may be connected with each other in any suitable manner, l have shown a bolt lla passing through openings in the bottoms of said members, said bottoms being spaced apart by suitable sleeves 1lb surrounding the bolts.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided a simple, yet an efficient device for supplying air to the flame of a liquid fuel burner and for spreading the flame. As excellent Vresults have been obtained from the general arrangement shown and described, the details herein set forth may well be followed. It is to be understood however that Within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous changes may be made.
I claim: A
A flame spreader comprising a plurality of apertured vertically spaced cup-shaped members arranged one Within the other and having their side Walls radially spaced from each other, the upper edges of each of said members being directed laterally outward 10 and upward to provide inclined peripheral flanges.
ln testimony whereof l have hereunto affixed my signature.
CHARLES H. BOECK.
