IMPROVEMENT IN DOORS FOR OPENINGS IN GLASS SCREENS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [48,153, dated March 3, 1874; application filed August 26, 1873.
provement in Doors for Openings in Glass and other Screens, of which the following is a specification:
Openings are often made in glass and wire screens, through which payments are made, and at such opening a plate ofglass or slab of stone has been inserted in a horizontal position to form a shelf or rest. The plate has been usually fastened in wooden ledges, so as to prevent breakage.
My invention relates to an improved frame of metal that is inserted into the screen, and carries a door adapted to receive a glass or other filling; and in this frame are ledges for the shelf of plate-glass or other material to rest upon, and the same is secured by a block ing-piece inserted into a recess in the frame and clamping the glass to place.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation of the door, frame, and shelf, the parts at one side being in section; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the door and shelf.
The frame a is made of the desired size and shape. It has a flange, 1, that rests against the surface of the glass 1), or other material forming the screen. The rim 2 of this frame a forms a complete and smooth inclosure of the edge of the screen, and becomes the boundary of the frame internally. The clamping-frame c is of a size and shape internally to correspond with the outside of the rim 2 of the frame a, and this frame 0 is secured to the frame a by the screws 6, and the edges of the glass or other screen I) are clamped firmly between 1 and c. When the screen is of glass, a strip of paper" may intervene between the metal of the frame and the glass, to prevent unequal pressure on the same from inequalities in the casting. This mode of securing the frame to the screen is to be distinguished from the frames that are provided with holes for the ends of wires to pass into, or in which a grooved wooden frame is affixed in the glass. The door-frame f is attached to the frame a by held together by screws.

The same rests upon the brackets or supports n at each angle of the frame a, and in the upright portions of the said frame a, at the angles thereof, recesses are formed for the reception of the blocking-pieces o 0 that enter said recesses, and are form ed slightly tapering, so that, when driven into place, the bottom of the blockingpiece rests upon the glass, and the top against the under side of the recess in the frame, and the blocking-piece is notched at its upper edge to prevent movement endwise.
By this construction the plate of glass is held firmly in place against any tipping or sliding movement, and, when desired, can be easily removed or altered in position.
I claim as my invention- 1. The frame a, with the flange 1 and rim 2 and the clamping-frame o, in combination with a door connected to the said frame, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. Aswinging door made of a double frame to receive a plate of glass or other material, in combination with the doublesurrounding frame screwed together to clamp the glass plate or other article forming the screen, substantially as set forth. I
3. The brackets a, cast upon the frame a, and receiving the plate or shelf 1, in combination with the blocking-pieces o 0 that are entered above the plate into recesses in the frame a, as and for the purposes set forth.
