ADJUSTABLE DOOR-HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 719,747, dated February 3, 1903.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBIN OHRIsTERssoN, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, residing at Etelhem, in the Kingdom of Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Door-Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked' thereon, which form a part of this specification.
When a door in consequence of wear of the hinges has settled, so as to leave a crack at the top of the door-frame, while sticking or wearing at the bottom, a ready remedy may be found in the use of adjustable hinges. Also through defective securing of the hinges and through changes of the door-frame or door a raising or lowering of the door may become necessary, and a great deal of labor, therefore, may be saved by using adjustable hinges. The present invention relates to making the door-hinges adjustable by as simple a device as possible, so that they will be no more expensive than ordinary non-adjustable hinges. The hinges of the present invention, therefore, can be employed to advantage on the doors of all kinds of rooms and apartments and for gates, house-doors, &c.
The invention is shown in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows the hinge from one side, partially in section, and a portion of the door Figs. 2 and 3 show each a horizontal section of the lower portion of the hinge, respectively, on the lines a b and c d of Fig. 1. Figs. 4 and 5 show a detail.
The lower part of the hinge is secured in usual manner to the door-frame, while the upper part 6 is secured to the door. The spindle 1 of the hinge is joined to or made in one piece with the fastening-plate 2 and is surrounded by a sleeve 3, which can be slid up and down. Fig. 4 shows the sleeve 3 shows a verticalsection of same. At the place where the hinge-spindle is joined to or hangs together with the plate 2 the sleeve 3 is provided with an aperture or slot 4, corresponding to the plate 2 and extending along the sleeve 3, so that the motion up and down of the latter is not interfered with. The slot 4 may either extend the whole length of the sleeve or, as shown in the drawings, not reach quite up to its upper end, leaving a piece which is not split open. In the former case thesleeve 3 is easier to make. In the latter case it is stronger, however. The hinge-spindle 1 has at the bottom an extension screwed into a not 5, on which the sleeve 3 bears at its lower end. The upper end of the hinge-spindle enters, as usual, into the tubular portion ofthe upper part of the hinge, which part is secured to the door. The upper part bears on the upper edge of the sleeve 3. By turning the nut 5 the sleeve 3 will be raised or lowered, and as a result the upper part, to-
gether with the door, will likewise be raised or lowered. The doors, accordingly, can always be kept in such condition that they will not wear on the door-frame, whether at top or at the bottom. It is evident that when a hinge of this description is employed the la-' bor involved in fitting the door on its hinges will be both simpler and more inexpensive than heretofore.
I claim- In an adjustable door-hinge, the combination of a hinge-spindle 1 made in one piece with the fastening-plate 2 belonging to the bottom part of the hinge and provided with a threaded extension beneath said fastening plate 2 on which extension is a nut 5, and a sleeve which may he slid up and down on the hinge-spindle and is provided with a longitudinalaperture or slot 4 for the fastening-plate of the aforesaid bottom part, said sleeve, moreover, resting on the nut 5 and supporting the upper part of the hinge, for the purpose set forth.
