IMPROVEMENT IN WINDOW-GUARDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,143, dated March 3, 187 1; application filed January 31, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN F. Rosen- MANN, of Davenport, -in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window-Guards, of which the following is a specification:

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved burglar-proof window-guard, which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use. The invention consists in an improved window-guard formed of the stationarybars, the pivoted bars, the loops, the sprin catches, the mortised plate, the sliding bolt, and the perforated lugs, said parts being con structed and arranged to operate in connection with each other and a window-frame, as hereinafter fully described.

A represents a windowframe, to the side posts of which are secured the upright bars B. To each of the upright bars B are pivoted the ends of four, more or less, cross-bars, O, to the free ends of which are pivoted the upright bar D. To the cross-bars 0, between the bars B and D, are pivoted one or more upright bars, E. Two frames are thus formed, each covering half of the window, the two inner bars D being parallel with each other, and close together. The frames thus constructed can be raised until the bars D E are close to each other and to the stationary bars B. To the lower part of one of the bars D and to the upper part of the other bar I) are attached two loops, 1*, of such a size as to receive the other ends of the said bars D. This arrangement of the loops F allows the frame, with which the upper loop F is connected, to be raised and lowered independently of the other. To the upper and lower parts of the bars D, that pass through the loops F, are attached spring-catches G, which spring over the said loops F, and fasten the two frames together. The lower ends of the two bars D are extended so as to enter a mortisein the base of the window-frame A, passing through a plate, H, attached to said base. The lower end of the bar D, to which the lower loop F is attached, is bent inward at right angles, so as to catch upon the under side of the plate H, where it is locked by a sliding bolt, I, attached to the outer side of the said bar D, and which, when pushed down into the mortise in the plate H, prevents thebar D from being raised without first raising the bolt I. The outer side of the lower end of the bolt I is beveled, to enable it to more readily enter the mortise of the plate H, and to cause it to push the bar D back into place. To the opposite sides of the middle part of the bar D are attached lugs J, which overlap the opposite sides of the middle part of the other bar D, and have a hole formed through them corresponding with a hole through the said bar D, to receive a padlock for locking the guard.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- An improved window-guard, formed of the stationary bars B, the pivoted bars 0 D E, the loops F, the spring-catches Gr, the mortised plate H, the sliding bolt I, and the perforated lugs J, said parts being constructed and ar ranged to operate in connection with each other and a window-frame, substantially as herein shown and described.
