CAROLINE L. PIERCE, OF lf'lAlJ, FLORIDA.
WATERPROOF LABEL nonnen.
Application filed April 19, 1923. Serial No. 633,167. i
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, CARoLiNn L. PIERCE, la citizen Vet the United `tates, residing at i'iiiami, in the county of Dade and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in `lWaterproof Label lilolders, or" which the following is a Speci cation.
This invention relates to holders, designed primarily tor retaining a card, tag or plate having indicia to set forth the name or other data ot a tree, shrub or plant to which the holder is attached, but itis to be understood that a holder, in accordance with this invention can be employed forretaining a card, tag or plate provided 'with indicia of a character other than that as referred to, and the invention has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set tortli, a holder including means Jfor notl only permanently connecting a nameV card, tag or plate therewith, but further tor protectw ing the same from dust, dirt, moisture or accidental removal, whereby the card, tag or plate is maintained in good condition for an indefinite period, so that one can clearly, after many years, read the indicia or data on the card, tag or plate as applied to the object to which the holder is attached.
Further objects of the invention areto provide a holder for the purpose set forth, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, water proof, ethcient in its use, readily attached in position for the purpose ot indicating an object, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement oi parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote f corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a tront elevation of a holder, in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a sect-ion on line 2 2. Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an elevation of the body portion ot the holder prior to the securing of the card, tag or plate therewith.
Figure 4 is an elevation of the trans parent protective paneltor that tace ot iaterial, of any suitable thickness, and comprises a body portion 1, having beveled corners 2, and longitudinally scored as at 3, e, and Vfurther transversely scored, as at 5, whereby the marginal portions 6, 7 and n* 8, can be bent over to oppose the forward tace of the body portion 1 to provide retaining flanges 9, 10 and 11. tegral with the body portion 1, is a breast portion 12, of tapering contour,.and which is scored as at 13, 14;, to provide for the convenient bending of the marginal portions' 15, 16 to oppose the forward face of the breast portion 12, thereby providing inclined retaining tlanges17, 18.
Formed integral with the breast portion 12, is ak neck portion 19, having beveled corners 20 and 21. longitudinally scored as at 22, v23, and transversely scored as at 24, to provide for the convenient bending of the marginal portions 25, 26 and 27, against therouter tace ot tie neck portion 19, thereby providing retaining flanges 28, 29 yand 30. The neck portion 30 is formed withV an opening 31.
The marginal portions 15 and 16 ot the breast portion 12, have their lower ends spaced from the upper ends ot the marginal portions 6, 7 ot the body portion 1. 'Ihe lower ends of the marginal portions 15, 16. are inclined and the upper ends ot the marginal portions 6, 7 are also'inclined, but the inclination of the lower end of the marginal portions 15, 16, extends in an opposite direction with respect to the inclination at the upper end of the marginal portions 6, 7, whereby when the flanges 9, 11, 17 a'nd 18 are formed, the upper ends of the flanges 9 and 11 will be brought into abutting engagement, with the lower ends of the flanges 17 and 18.
The upper ends of the marginal portions 25 and 27 are inclined and the ends ot the iarginal portion 26 are inclined and by this arrangement when the flanges 28, 29 and 30 are set up, the upper ends ot the flanges 28 and 29 will abut against the ends of the tiange 30. The lower ends of the flanges 28, 2.9 are spaced from the upper ends oi the flanges 17 and 18.
Mounted within the holder is a prete Formed in- The neck portion 19 is formed, and the said member 32 is of the same length and width as the holder.
The card, tag or plate is indicated at 33,"
and which may be or' any suitable material, and` which conforms in'contour to the shape of the member 32, as well as being or" a length and width equal to the length and width ot the member 32.- rThe member 32 is provided with an opening 34e, and the member 33 with an opening 35. The openings 3i, 35, register with each other and also register with the opening3l at the back of the holder.
The holder is secured in position by any suitable ymeans extending through the registering openings 3l, 34 and 35.
lVl-ien setting up the holder for the purpose of pern'ianently connecting the member therewith,'the member 33 is positioned against the forward `face of the holder prior to the 'forming of the flanges. After the member 33 has been positioned against the holder, and arranged to align with the several scores thereof, the protective member 32 is positioned against the face of the member 33 which is provided with the desired indicia, and with the vmember 32 flush with the edges of the member 33. After the members 32 and 33 have been mounted @with respect to the body portion, the several marginal portions are bent to provide the flanges whereby the membersy 32, 33 are permanently connected to the holder.
The flanges overlap the member 33, thereby providing, in connection with the mem-j ber 32, means to protect the member 33 from dust, dirt or moisture, or further to prevent the tampering with said member 33.
The flanges when formed are kbent into snugcontact with the member 32.
The member 32, as well. as the member 33 includes a body portion, a breast portion and a neck, of the saine contour as the body portion, breast portion and neck of the holder.
ililthougli two forms are shown for connecting a hanger or wire with the holder, yet it is to be understood that any suitable means or arrangement can be employed for such purpose.
Although the preferred embodiment of the holder, in accordance with this invention, is as illustrated and described, yet it is tobe understood that changes in the details of construction can be had which will fall within the light of the invention as claimed.
lWhat l claim is A holder for the purpose set forth comprising a rectangular body portion having c its lower end formed with an inturned flange and each of its sides provided with an inturned flange. a tapering breast portion integral with the top of said body portion and having each side thereof provided with an inturned ange, a rectangular neck portion integral with said breast portion and having each or its sides and its free end provided with an inturned flange, an indicia carrying means positioned against the forward face of said body, breast and neck p0rtions and haviiu;` its edges inclosed by said flanges, a transparent protecting member positioned against said indicia carrying means and having its edges inclosed by said flanges and further having its outer face overlapped and engaged by said flanges, said member and means conforming in contour to the shape of said body,l breast and neck portions, said neck portion provided with an opening. and said means and member having registering openings. aligning with the opening 1n said neck portion.
ln testimony whereof, I aflix my signature hereto.
CAROLINE L. PIERCE.
