K, JAGscl-urz SEALING MEANS FOR GAS HOLDERS Filed April 19. 1921 l ,firm/swf@ Patented Jan. 15, 1924.
UNITED STTE httldltltl GERMANY.
Application tiled april taal.
To all 'who-m, t may concern:
Be it known that I, Kennen Jnescnirz, a citizen of VJaustria, and resident of Mainz, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in dealing Means for Gas Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention consists in an im prei/ement in sealing means for gas holders, of Which seal several forms are described and illustrated in my earlier Letters Patent 1,275,696, dated July 31st, 191e.
The improved seal is constructed according to the present invention by arranging in the annular peripheral trough containing the sealing fluid, a sealing means or packing consisting of a material that is sutliciently impervious to liquid. rlhe inner edge of this sealing means is attached in a liquid-tight manner to the closing member, Whereas its outer edge is attached in a fluid-tight manner to a sealing member which is adapted to slide in a fluid-tight manner on the inner wall of the holder, and Which is pressed against the inner surface of the holder by means of suitable Weighted levers or spring actuated levers. This sealing member is preferably made of iron, Wood, leather, or the like.
A constructional example of the improved seal is illustrated in the accompanying; drawing in which Fig. l is a vertical section through the sealing means and the adjacent parts of the Wall of the holder and the elo ing member; Fig. 2 is a vertical section illustrating another form of the invention.
c is the Wall of the gas holder in which the disk shaped closure member l5 is vertically movable. The periphery of said closure member Z) is shaped to form a trough c which contains the sealing fluid and extends about the entire periphery of the disk shaped closure member Zi. A packing supporting member f extending continuously through the entire annular peripheral trough c and composed of material that is impervious to fluid, is attached at its inneredge in a liquid tight manner to the closure member l), Whereas at its outer edge it is attached in a fluid-tight manner to the sealing member or packing al vvhich is adapted to slide on the inner surface of the Wall of the holder. The sealing member or packing d which is adapted to slide on the Wall of the holder is connected at suitable distances apart to Serial lilo. lttltmt.
Weighted levers e, which are pivoted at g and thus effect a pressing ofthe sealing member d against the holder wall te seal the space between the trough and the wall of the holder.
@lering-actuated levers may be employed instead of these Weighted levers, as shown in Fig. 2.
ll claim:
l. 'lhe combination of a gas holder, a closure member movable therein, an annular peripheral trough carried by said closure member and slidable along the inner surface of said gas helder, said trough being adapted to contain a sealing fluid, a sealing member impervious to liquids located in said trough and slidable along said inner surface of said gas holder, a packing supporting member having its inner edge connected with said closure member in a luidtigh-t manner and its outer edge connected with said sealing member in a fluidtight manner, and niechanical means carried by said closure mem ber and exerting a force in a direction solely transverse to the direction of movement of said closure member for automatically pressing said sealing member into close contact with said inner surface of the gas holder to thereby provide a fluid-tight joint Without obstructing the sliding movements of said sealing member.
2. The combination of a gas holder, a closure member movable therein, an annular peripheral trough carried by said closure member and slidable along the inner surface of said gas holder, said trough being adapted to contain a sealing fluid, a scaling mem ber carried by said closure member and located in said trough and slidable along the inner surface of said gas holder, a lever pivotally mounted upon said closure member and operatively connected with said sealing member, and a weight carried by said lever whereby the latter is actuated. to press said sealing member into surface contact With said inner surface of the gas holder -to provide a fluid-tight joint Without obstructing the sliding movements of said sealing member.
3. 'lhe combination of a gas holder, a closure member movable therein, an annular peripheral trough carried by said closure member and slidable along the inner sur face of said gas holder, said trough being adapted to contain a sealing fluid, a sealing tlf) iiiembei' carried by; Sad dogme member and .sueiiing the siiding movements of Suid seri]- ioczited in sind trough and slidzibie along the im); ,neiubm'. inner surface of seid gas holder, e lever 131V- n testimony whei'eoi I have hereunto Set @tally mounted upon seidA closure niemeer my hand in the presence of two fluhr-aei'ibmgp' 5 and operatively connected with Said Sealing; Witnesses.
