KITE CONSTRUCTION.

Be it known that I, EDWARD MASSA, a citizen of the United States of Mexico, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Kite Constructions, of which the following is a specification.

In carrying out the present invention it 1S my purpose to improve and simplify the general construction of kites and to provide a kite wherein the marginal edges of the body of the kite will be reinforced and so formed as to provide pockets to receive the ends of the sticks that hold the fabric or covering.

It is also my purpose to provide a kite which will embrace the desired features of simplicity, efiiciency and durability and which may be manufactured and marketed at small cost.

With the above recited objects in View, and others of a similar nature, the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling with the scope of the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawings:

Figure 1 is a perspective View of a kite constructed in accordance with my invention.

Figure 2 is a rear elevation thereof.

Figure 3 is a cross sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.

Figure 1 is an enlarged fragmentary view showing the marginal edge of the body and the reinforcing cord therefor.

In accordance with my invention the frame of my improved kite comprises crossed sticks 1-1 arranged X-fashion, as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawings, and a reinforcing stick 2 of approximately one-half the length of each stick 1 and arranged across the sticks 1 and intersecting the latter at the point of intersection of the crossed sticks 1-1. Arranged upon the crossed sticks 1-1 and the reinforcing stick 2 is a fabric covering 3. The marginal edges of the fabric covering 3 are turned upon themselves and stitched tothe main body portion of the fabric, as at 4:, to provide a marginal pocket 5. The hemmed portion of the fabric that forms the side edges of the body of the kite is in sections and the adjoining edges of these sections overlap the adjoining edges of the other sections at the points corresponding to the ends of the reinforcing stick 2, as at 6, and also overlap the ends of the material formin the hem at the top and bottom end edges 0 the body, as at 7 These overlapping end portions are stitched on lines substantially parallel with the ends of the respective sticks, as at 8, so as to provide pockets 9, as clearly illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawings, into which the ends of the sticks are inserted, as clearly shown in Figure 2. Extending around the pocket 5 formed by the hem is a reinforcing cord 10 that is connected to the ends of the sticks. This construction increases the strength of the body of the kite at the corners and also at the marginal edges, so that the fabric will be securely held to the sticks.

At the center of the fabric heart-shaped tabs 11 are stitched to the fabric at the front and rear surfaces thereof, so as to receive one end of the bridle cord 12. The other ends of the bridle cord 12 are connected to the top ends of the sticks 11, as at 13, while at the apex of the bridle cord is con nected one end of the winding cord 14. This winding cord 14 may carry a pennant 15 upon which is printed or otherwise impressed advertising matter and, if desired, the front of the body of the kite may also be provided with advertising matter.

Connected to the lower ends of the crossed sticks l--1 are the extremities of the forked end 15 of the tail cord 16 and this tail cord 16 is provided with loops 17 appropriately spaced apart and in which are disposed pieces of fabric 18, or other suitable material, to constitute the tail for the kite.

I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention with a view to imparting a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the said specific construction and relative arrangement of parts, inasmuch as in the future practice of my invention such changes or modifications may be made as fairly fall within the scope of my invention as defined by my appended claim.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is

In kite construction, a frame comprising crossed sticks and a reinforcing stick intersecting said crossed sticks at the point where said crossed sticks intersect each other,

a reinforcing cord extending around said frame and connected to the ends of said sticks, a. fabric covering on said sticks having the edges thereof hemmed to provide a marginal pocket for said cord, the material forming said hem being in sections between the ends of said sticks and having the adjoining edges overlapped and stitched in such manner as to provide pockets for the respective ends of said sticks, and reinforc- 1 ing tabs at the center of the fabric and at opposite sides thereof.
