Description

NITED STATES PATENT -FFIon GURNEY C. PATTISON, QF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOG-SIGNALS.
Speoication forming part of Letters Patent No. l 48,084, dated March 3,1874; application filed June 21, 187:5.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, GURNEY C. PATTIsoN, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and in 'the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fog- Alarm; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement ot' a fog alarm, to be used either on a vessel or at lighthouses, shoals, or other places, and operated by the waves or swell ofthe water, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
1n order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring' to the annexed drawing, which represents a side view of my fog-alarm.
A represents a rudder-shaped plate of any suitable dimensions, provided at one end with an upward-projecting rod or post, B. The upper end of this rod is bent outward, and has a bell, C, suspended from its extreme end. At the other end of the plate A are formed or attached suitable loops, a a, or their equivalents, by means ot'which the plate may bc hinged to the back edge of the ships rudder. Or the alarm may be used stationary by driving a post or pile, D, in the ground near light-houses, at shoals, or any other desired place, and letting the loops a a pass over said post or pile. tached to or formed ou the upper edge ot' the plate A, to prevent the same from sinking, and to allow it to tall and risc with the tide. When attached to the rudder ot' a ship, this buoy is not required, as the rudder itself holds the alarm up. The waves or swell ot' the water will, in eithcr'ease, move the plate, or swing it back and forth constantly on its hinges, and thus keep up a continual alarm.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The plate A, with rod or post B and bell C, with or without the buoy G, and swinging on a stationary post or pile, oron the end ot' a ships rudder, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that l claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day ot' June, 1873.
GURNEY C. PATTISON.
