ICE-REMOVING APPARATUS.

To all whom'z't may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN C. WARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Beaumont, in the county of Jefferson and- State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in`Ice-Removing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in devices for removing manufactured ice from Stationary cans lin which the ice is formed.

The object of the invention isito provide a device of Athis character which iS of extremely simple and durable construction,reliable in operation and easy and inexpensive to manufacture and which may be readily removed from the ice after the ice has been withdrawn from the can and without the 'necessity (yf-employing hot water, steam or the like for effecting removal thereof.

Other objects and advantages of the invention reside in certain novel features of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim,.reference being had to the accompanying drawings formlng part of this Specification, and in which:

Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in section, illustrating the invention in use with an ice making apparatus; and g Figure 2 is a perspective view, illustrating the device as it appears after the ice has been withdrawn from the can.

Referring to the drawings and more especially to Figure l, the cans are designated at C and are positioned as usual in the tank T forming part of the ice making apparatus. The cover or top of the tank is as usual made up of a number of sections, designated atS,y

and these sections are provided with openings O for a purpose which will hereinafter more fully appear.

A pair of grappling devices or hooks are associated with each can C. Each grappling device 10 comprises a shank 11 o rectangular cross section and terminating in its lower end with a hooked head or bill 12. Adjacent the upper ends of the Shanks 11 transversely extending pins 13. are provided, the pins being removably fitted in openings provided therefor in the Shanks 11. v Preferably there is one such pin 13 foreach shank 11, and the pins are removably held in these openings by friction or in .any other approved manner. The upper extremities of the Shanks l1 have integrally formed therewith open eyes or loops 15.

When the cans are filled with water and before the ice is formed, the grappling devices l0 are arranged as shown in Figure 1 with their Shanks engaging the side Wall of the can and with their hooked heads or bills extending inwardly into the body of water. Preferably the grappling devices are arranged at about the center of the cans and on the opposite sides thereof. The pins 13 are next inserted in theiropenings and engage the sections S of the top of the tank and support the grappling devices when in position while the ice is being formed. When the ice is formed the hooked heads or bills 12 of the grappling devices are firmly embedded in the ice and the Shanks 11 are also embedded in the ice but these Shanks are not entirely surrounded by ice as no ice extends across the outer side of the shank except possibly a thin film. After the ice has been formed and when it is desired t0 move the block of ice from the can, the can dogs now in general use may be engaged with the eyes 15 of the grappling devices and operated from the air hoist (usually found in ice houses or manufacturing plants) for removing the block of `ice from the can.

After the block of ice has been removed, the grappling devices may be readily disassociated from the ice by simply tapping them with a hammer which loosens the hooked heads or bills of the grappling devices and enables withdrawal of the grappling devices from the ice.

I claim:

In a device vfor removing manufactured ice from cans, a pair of grappling devices having Shanks provided at their lower ends with inwardly directed and upturned hooked heads, said grappling devices being adapted to be inserted into a can before the ice is formed whereby the Shanks and the upturned hooked heads are embedded in the sides of the block of ice with the hooked heads engaging the ice in such manner as to be held a ainst accidental displacement or against displacement b upward pull while being readil remova le by a blow on the upper' end o the grapples.
