Description

B. B. MICHAELS BARREL Filed Kbrif is,
INVENTOR :u be hereinafter described and particularl set Platerited Jan. 15, 1924.
UNITED STATES BENJAMIN B. MIOHAELS, OF BROQKLYN, NEW YORK.
BARREL.
Application filed April 16,
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, BENJAMIN B. MICHAELS citizen of the United States, residing at l3rooklyn in the county of Kings and State of New ork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bar: rels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to barrels, and has for an.obj.ect to provide a new top for barrels, constructed of wooden steves, said top beingpreferably of metal and formed in one or morepieces. thereby enabling the top to bereadil applied in a manner more expeditious is an possible with tops of the wooden or'sectional variety.
In addition to the foregoing this invention comprehends ini rovements in. the details of construction an arrangement on parts, to
forth in the. appended claim.
In theaccomp'anyin drawings in: which similar and correspon ing parts are desigqr witha notch; 11 inithe conventional manner,
nated bythe same characters ofreferences. throughout the several views in which they a ar.
igure 1 is a view. in section of the upper end of a. barrel illustrating the application thereto. of my improved barrel top.
Figure 2 is a similar view in section of a.
modified form of barrel top. C

with. reference to Figures l and 4,"101in-' dicatesia conventional form of barrel cpn-. structed g-of stares in, the usual manner and 'havingthenpper end ,of eachstave provided designed ordinarily -to receive the edge-of thewoodencover. This notch, forms an annulargroovo-which is utilized for the pur pose ofmy invention in a manner to be s. presently shown. I next provide a hoop 12 o fjmetal, designed to surround .exteriorly jthe upper end of the barrel, said hoop being forme with an inner annular portion bent at ja'nfangle to the hook portion 12 and con- Nistituting the chime, as indicated at 13. The f-hOOP portion 11 is preferably corrugated as shown in the Figure 4 to give strength. The itop portion consists of a disc 14 which is preferably corrugated and is formed at its edge with an inturned portion 15 forming signed to enter the groove 11 and is t 1920. Serial HO. 874,291.
the crows, said inturned portion being1 deerefore shaped to conform to the configuration of said groove.
Innpractice the disc 14 is embedded in the barrel and fitted within the roove. 11, and
finally the hoop 12 is place u on the. top.
end of the barre and driven in p ace thereby, I
contracting the same and securely Holding qr I have illustrated in Fi ure 2 a. slightly 'top A the top 14 in place.
modified formin which t e hoop/an are bulged all in one piece. The hoop-is inillcated at 16 and thetop at 1?, the, latter bein circular designed to fit within the -openien of the barrel, whiletheperiphery-oi; thjedisc is bent up as at 18 to form an annular portion to engage the inner surface of the barrel, said portion 18 then being bent around over a the top edge of the stoves and merging into the hoop portion 16. The portions 131and.
18 are thus in spaced relation toreceive the 'upper end of the barrel staves whichaneed not be notched. The hoop; 1 6 is driven on the end of the barrel stavesin theusual manner, thus forming a combined hoop and top In Figure 3 I have. illustrated a stills;
further modified form in whiclna hoo audit.
top are formed in one piece. and uti' izing purpose of securing the structure more firmly in place. The top portion 19'is in the form of a disc having its edge bent upward and outward as at 20 to enter the groove11,
{in this manner the annular groove 11 for the 1* and then bent inward again at anangle to r the. portion 20 to. form a portion-21*also seating in the groove ll and contomnin to.
- u ward the transverse configuration ot material is then bent outwardcang to form the chime 22,'and thendowniward again to form the hoop 23 which encircles the barrel exteriorly. By, utilizing, the
groove 11 in this manner it will-beseen that the top and hoop will be morefirmly held in place. In any of the forms just described the tops 14, 17 and 19 may be plain or cor- .ru ted as desired.
related tparts without departing from the adapted to snap and be seated in the groove in spirit 0 the invention or the scope of the of the container, said upwardly and outap nded claim. wax-(11y bent period being formed integral 0 aving thus described my invention What with a chime and hoop encircling the top l-I" claim as new and desire to secu 'e by ed? externally of the container. v
