UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIGE.
JOHN R. KENNEDY, OF TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-BALE TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,068, dated March 3, 1874; application filed February 21, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
"Be it known that I, JOHN R. KENNEDY, of Tuscaloosa, State of Alabama, have invented an Improvement in the Cotton-Bale Tie, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to make a fastening for the ends of hoops of the cottonbale, so that they will not require bending. The iron used in-making the hoops for this fastening can be made of ordinary hoop-iron,
and is much cheaper than iron that requires bending. The holes required for the fastening, as per drawing, are oblong. On one end only one hole is required, which is to be near the end, as per drawing. On the other end any number of holes can be used to make the bale of any required size, the holes all being of an equal distance apart.
To make the fastening, one of the crooks of the piece A is inserted in the end of the hoop having only one hole, b. This is then brought on the outside of the other end; and the other crook of the piece A is inserted in the hole a. The fastening is then made. To form a smooth surface outside, it will be observed that the piece A is made a fraction JN O. It. KENNEDY.
