Description

JOSEPH D. HUSBANDS, JR., OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN GEARINGS FOR STONE-SAWlNG MACHINES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. llldl, dated March 3, 1874; application tiled November 18, 1873.
more fully appear.
Ot the drawing, Figure l isa top plan; Fig. 2, a side elevation; Fig. 3, a modified screwconnection, instead of sliding table.
A is the frame of the machine. a are standards on the frame, in the journal-bearings ot' Awhich the respective shafts B B turn. I
provide each ofthe shafts B B with a coneshaped pulley or wheel, b b. The arrangement ot' the cones b b with relation to each other is, however, in theA viceversa position shown `in Figs. 1,2. The power source connects with the fixed belting-wheel C; C being the loose belting-whfeehto whichfthe change can be made when the machine is not to be operated.
In order to communicate the revolution ot' the cone b to the cone b on the opposite shaft B', I provide thejintermediate frictionpulley 0. The friction-pulley c has its shaft properly supported -to turn in journal-standards c c2. 'Ihe standards el c2 are secured to the top of a slide-table, D. (See Figs. l, 2.) 'Ihe slide-table D operates on the frame A, heilig guided in its sliding action through guide-'plates d d1, Fig. 1. At bottom the table D is provided with a rack,d2, in which meshes a gear-wheel, E, Fig. 2, which is on the transverse shaft e, which is operated by hand-crank e. By turning the hand-crank e', a forward-andbackward motion is imparted to slide-table D. The saw or cutter attachment is keyed to end of the shaft B. As the friction-wheel e imparts the revolution of the cone b to that of b', it will further be noticed that, in causing the slide-table D to move4 forward and backward, thc said frictionwheel 1s caused to act in combination with said respective cones, to achieve the required increased or diminished speed. By way of a modification, a running screw, F, can be provided. (See Fig. 3.) The standards r11-c2, carrying the friction-wheel c, are fitted to slide upon the face or top of table D, having flanged guides ffl, said' table, in this case, being made stationary. A ruiming slot in table D (See Fig. 3) permits the standards c1 c2 to extend below the table, and so that through said standards the screw F is iitted to operate. At the end of screw F, by means ot' bevelwheels f 2 f3 and hand-crank, the said screw is made to revolve and impart to the standards c1 c2, with friction-wheel e, the required slide or backend-forward motion.
As apparent, the combination of parts aforesaid is applicable to lall machines in which the speed is to be varied at will, or requiring an increased or diminished motion, without incurring any undue jar or irregular action or loss ot' power.
Vhat I claim is- 'lhe table D, operated by either rack and bar d2 or screw F, in combination with friction-pulley c and cone-pulleys b b', substantially as described.
In testimony of said invention I have hereunto set my hand in presence of witnesses. JOSEPH D. HUSBANDS, JR. Witnesses:
WILLIAM W. HERTHEL, CHARLES MEIsNER.
