UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER ADAMS,.OF MARATHON, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHUTTER-WORKERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,018, dated March 3, 1874; application iilcd May 10, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
A Be it known that I, WALTER ADAMS, of Marathon, in the county of Cortland and State New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Hinges for Vindow-Blinds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specication, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation Fig. 2 is an inside view of the same with the powerwheel and its covering-wheel removed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the entire hinge. Fig. 4L is a view of the power-wheel 5 and Fig. 5 is a view of the covering-plate for the same.
This invention has relation to means for working window-shutters; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Arepresents the hinge-leaf to be attached to the window-blind, said leaf being formed with an upward-projecting arm, B, having inclined cogs a a around about three-fourths of the circumference of its outer rounded end. C represents the leaf to be attached to the window-casing, said leaf being on its outer side provided with two projecting ears, b b, between which the cogged arm B is inserted and pivoted by means of a pin, d. The inner side of the leaf C has a circular recess or box, e, formed in it, and a slot is made from near the center of said recess through the leaf between the two ears b b. In this box or recess is placed a disk, D, provided with two camiianges, i i, as shown in Fig. 4, and firmly attached to a shaft, f, which has its inner bearing in the leaf O, and the other end passes through a plate, G, covering the recess e and inclosing the disk or wheel D in thesame. This end of the shaftfis then to pass through the window-frame, and to have a knob attached to the same within the house, by means of which the disk or wheel D may thus be revolved in either direction. The inclined cogs a a on the arm B fit between the cam-anges t' z' on the disk D, so that by turning said disk the arm and leaf, with the blind to which said leaf is attached, will turn on the pin d. The cogs being inclined, and the cams or iianges in the shape shown, the blind will be locked in any position desired, and cannot be moved except b v revolving the disk D.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The hinge, hereindescribed, for operating window-shutters, consisting of the leaf A, hav ing the upwardprojecting arm B with the inclined cogs a, the leaf C having the circular recess c and projecting ears b, and the disk D having the cam-flanges t' incased in the leaf C, the several parts being constructed and arranged as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WALTER ADAMS.
