Be it knownthat I, JOHN HENRY MILLER, a citizen of the United ISta-tes, residing at Rising Sun, in the county of Wood and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Cement-Block Machine, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the sub-ject matter of this application is an improvement in the cement-block machine shown in Patent Number 844,457, granted to me on Feb. 19, 1907.
The cement block machine shown in the patent above alluded to comprises a compression member, and this invention contemplates the provision of novel means for operating the compression member.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains. Y Vith the above and other object-s in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter describedy and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is Claimed, changes in the preciseembodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a device constructed in accordance with the invention, parts appearing in section; Figure 2 is an elevation wherein they operating mechanism is viewed at right angles to the showing of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Figure 1; Figure 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Figure 2.
The device forming the subject matter of .this application is adapted to be used in connection with cement block machines of various sorts, but by way of illustration there is shown in the drawings, a few parts of the device covered by my aforesaid Patent Number 844,457. The parts which are common to both the machine sho-wn in this application, and the machine shown in the patent will be passed over briefly, the numerals used being those employed in the patent.
The machine embodies a frame 10 carry ing a standard 24 supporting' a back plate 25 constituting part of a mold boX. The frame 10 carries guide bars 29 supporting a bottom plate 30 having' a projection 32. The
front plate of the mold b 'ox is marked by i the numeral 33'and is pivoted to thek bottom plate 30, the bottom plate supporting a pallet 43. The numeral 17 designates a vertically movable core lmounted for yreciprocation in the pallet 43 and `in the bottom plate 30, any suitable means 19 being supplied for imparting vertical movement to the pallet. A tamping or compression plate is shown, and has a hollow'extension 61. v
Passing to the detailed construction of the device which characterizes this present application over my aforesaid patent, the numeral 1 marks a lever, fulcrumed at 2 on the standard 24. A flexible element 3 is con-v nected to the outer end of the lever 1 and l cylindrical ends 15 of the, shaft 14 are re ceived for sliding movementand for rotation in the slots 12 of the guides 11 and are rotatable in the extensions 5 of the'lever 1.`
Securing elements 16 may be mountedin the ends 15 of the shaft 14, outwardly of the guides 11. y l
The numeral 2O marks an operating member or handle, having forks 21l located between the extensions 5 of the lever'l and mounted on the polygonal intermediate portioni18 of the shaft 4, the construction being such that when swinging movement is imparted to the operating member 20, rotation will be imparted to the shaft 14. An eccentric 23 is carried by the polygonal intermediate Portion 18 of the shaft 14 and is, therefore, rotatable with the shaft, when the shaft is rotated through the instrumentality of the operating member 20. The eccentric 23 operates within a strap or head 26, antifriction devices, such as balls 27, being interposed between the eccentric and the strap or head. The eccentric 23 and the. strap 261ie between the forks 21 of the operating member 20, the strap or head 26 having -akdepending arm 28 mounted on a pivot element 31 carried by bosses 34 which project inwardly;y tc'ward each other, from the guides l1.
ln practical operation, assumingrthat the 23 will be rotated, the radius arm, includ ing the parts 28 and 26 Vbeing carried downwardly, when the handle 2O is swung in the direction of the arrow A, in Figure 1, the compression member `moving downwardly and the ends 15 of the shaft 14 mov# ing downwardly in the slots 12 Vof the guides 11. The construction and operation of the device is such that a proper tamping of the material within the mold box, will be brought about.`
vThe latch 8 may be cast olf from the projection 32 and when the operating member 2O is swung in the direction of the arrow Bj in Figure 1, the lever l will swing on its pivotal 'mounting 2, the entire operating mechanism, including. the compres sion element 6() being carried backwardly, away from the mold '5. The weight l acts as a ycounterpoise', and' renders comparatively easy, the backward swinging movement of the compression member 60, and parts associated therewith, in the direction of the arrow B.

In a device of the class described, a frame; a lever fulcrumed on the frame and including forks; a compression member; guides on the compression member; a handle having forks; a shaft comprising a polygonal intermediate' portion, and cyli'n drical ends; the eccentric being mounted on the polygonal portion of the shaft, the forks ofthe' handle being mounted on thepolygf onal portion vof vthe shaft,` the cylindricalr ends of the shaft being slidable in the guides and being rotatable in the forks of the lever; a strap surrounding the eccentric and disposed between the forks of the handle; and means for mounting lthe strap' for swinging movement on the compression member.
