ELI INMAN, OF EATON, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,699, dated September 9, 1873; application filed August 2, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELI INMAN, of Eaton, in the county of Delaware and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Drag-Saws 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this spec itication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon. y
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of my machine in side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the saine.
My invention relates to that class ot' woodsawing machines in which the saw is attached to an arm, and operated by means of a pitman from a revolving crank-wheel; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the devices whereby the saw is raised and lowered and guided, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the bed-frame of :ny machine, near one end of which is an upright frame, B, braced on both sides by curved braces G C. In suitable boxes on the upright trame B is a horizontal sha-ft, a, having a crank, E, at one end for revolving the shaft, and at the other end is a wheel, l). On the face ot' this wheel is a crank or wrist pin, b, upon which is attached a pitman, G, connecting the same to a saw-arm, H, and this saw-arm has the saw I firmly attached to its other end. These parts may all be constructed and arranged in any of the known and usual ways, as I am aware that they are not new, and therefore lay no claim to the same. The saw-arm H its in and passes through a box, J, the bottom d of which is extended toward the rear, and pivoted to short standards e on the bed-frame A. The upper side of the box J is, by a short link, j', connected with an arm, K, which extendsforward from a rock-shaft, L, journaled in the upper ends of standards M M on the bed-trame. From this shaft another arm, K, extends upward, and is, by a rod, h, connected with a lever, N, the lower end of which is pivoted to the bed-frame at such a point that the person operating the crank E can readily, without changing his position, operate said lever also.
By these means the saw and saw-arm, as well as the box J, with its extended bottom d, are raised and lowered at will, and the box J guides the saw-arm in its movement back and forth.
O O are curved standards extending upward from the bed-trame at the front end ot' the box J, to hold the saw and saw-arm from movin g laterally.
What I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letterslatent, is
The combination ofthe box J, link f, rockshaft L, arms K K, rod It, and lever N, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. A
In testimony that Iclaiin the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ELI INMAN.
