SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,006, dated April 17, 1883.

I To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMILE FERDINAND DEL BONDIO,a residentof the city of New Orleans, parish of Orleans, and State of Louisiana, have invented acertain new and useful Improvement in Butter-Workers or Machines for Making Butter, 8w. and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to-the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of machines used in the manufacture of butter and artificial butter, commonly called butter, butterine, oleomargarine, 850.; and it consists in a novel combination and arrangement of parts by which is secured a thorough utilization of all the butter-making properties contained in milk or in the oil of tallow or other article from which butter, butterine, oleomargarine, &c., is made.
The construction and operation of the machine will be readily understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, whereon- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the machine with certain parts thereof in sectional lines. Fig.2is avertical cross-section through the line or w, of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan or top view of the machine, and Fig. 4 adiagram of some of the working parts thereof.
The frame of this machine is rectangular in form and composed of four vertical pieces, A, fixed at their upper ends by longitudinal pieces B B and cross-ties O O, and near their lower ends by longitudinal beams D D and cross-beams E E. On the latter are secured two longitudinal ways or slides, f, having recesses through their whole lengths, in which operates a movable table or trough, G, the latter provided on its under side with a longitudinal rack, h, which is engaged by apinion, 'i, that is secured on a shaft, k, which has hearings in the longitudinal pieces D D. The shaft kis furthermore provided with a ratchetwheel, I, and with arms at m" on each side thereof, as shown in Fig. 2. In the outer ends of these are slots Wfor the reception of a pin, 0, which is fitted in the lower end of a pendulum,p, that is suspended from a pin, g, which projects inwardly from the piece B, as shown. The pendulum aforesaid is provided at its upper end with an inwardly projecting arm, r, for purposes hereinafter described. Between the arms at m is pinned a pawl, t, for engaging and operating the ratchet-wheel Z and other parts of the machine connected there with.
The letters H H designate beams, the ends of which are connected at certainldistances apart to the cross-ties G C. These beams are provided with journal-bearings I Ifor the receptiouof shafts K K, the latter somewhat longer than the former and having additional hearings in the outerlongitudinal pieces,BB, and the two shafts connected by gear-wheels, as shown at L L. The shaft K is provided with a pulley, M, through which the operating-powerisapplied. Thegear-wheelsLL are each provided with crank-pins u u, on which are fitted levers or connecting-rods N N, that are pinned to a second set of levers, O O, as shown at o, and to a third set of levers, P P, as at w. The upper ends of the second set of levers, O O, are journaled to the outer ends of a fixed shaft, It, while the lower ends of the same are connected by a shaft, S, on which is hinged or pivoted a heater, T, having anglelevers y y, the outer ends of which are pivot ed or bolted to the lower ends of the third set of levers, P P, as shown at a (6.
Near the lower ends of the levers O, and fitted in the upper edge thereof, is a set-screw, b, which, in the upward movement of the said levers, impinges against the under side of the arm r, thereby causing the pendulum to operate and through it the ratchet-wheel Z and the means connected therewith for giving an endwise movement to the table or trough G.
In Fig. 4 the operating-levers are shown at their greatest height, as when operating the pendulum.
In the operation of the machine the pawl t is raised, so as to permit of the forward move ment of the table or trough Gr to receive the material to be operated upon. Power is then applied to the pulley M, whereby the whole machine is put in motion.
An important feature in this invention consists in the manner in which the heater is connected with its operating mechanism, which not only serves to alternately raise and lower the same,.but also gives to it a rocking or kneading motion, which, as the table or trough is moved toward it, insures a thorough working of the material contained therein.
1 am aware that machines for working butter have been constructed with beaters having an up-and-down motion combined with a horizontal one. Hence Ido not claim the same as my invention but,
Having described my invention, what I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with the fixed shaft It and the shaft K, carrying wheels L, having pins to u, the levers N and O, the lower ends of the latter having hinged orpivoted thereto a beater, T, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
2. The fixed shaft R and the levers 0, hav-' ing a heater, T, hinged or pivoted to thelower ends thereof, with means whereby the said beater is alternately raised and lowered and at the same time imparting thereto a rocking or kneading motion, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination with the fixed shaft R and the shaft K, carrying wheels L, having crank'pins u a, the levers N, O, and 1, and the beater T, having angle-braces 1, said leversand braces connected, as described,by pivots 'v w and bolts a, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In combination with the lever O, provided with set-screw b, the pendulum-rod p, suspended on pin q, said rod provided near its upper end with a projecting arm, r, and at its lower end with side pins, 0, operating in the and the ratchet mechanism whereby the table or trough G is operated, thelevers O, with mechanism described for imparting motion to the pendulum at each upward stroke of the said levers, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
6. In combination with the pendulum 12, having an arm, 1, the arms m m, rack h, and pinion i, the pivoted levers 0, having setscrew 1) fitted in the lower part of one of the same, as described, and'thewheelsL, with connecting-levers N, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7. The arrangement of shaft K, carrying pulley M and pinions L, the shaft K, carrying gear-wheel L, having pins u u, the shaft R, with its levers O, the beater T, and the connecting angle-braces 3 and levers P and N, in combination with the rack h, pinion i, and the pendulum 19, having arm 0*, said pendulum connected with the levers m of a ratchet mechanism, whereby the table or trough G is operated,substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
