Be it known that I, ARTHUR MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oak Park, in the county of vCook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Containers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates, more particularly, to milk cans, my objects bein to provide a novel, simple and economica construction of can which may be readily cleansed thereby rendering it highly sanitary, and which shall be very durable of construction, adapting it to withstand to a high degree the stresses to which cans are subjected in the rough handling of the same; to reduce the amount of material required in the constructing of a can; and generally to so improve upon containers, particularly milk cans, as hitherto constructed, as to render them better adapted to the use for which l they are rovided.

Figure 1 is a view in vertical sectional elevation of a milk can constructed in accordance with my invention; and Figure 2, an enlarged broken section taken at the line 2 2 on Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrows.
In accordance with the preferred, illustrated embodiment of my invention I form the can of an upwardly-dished bottom section 3, the upper marginal annular edgeportion` of which, represented at 4, forms the lower portion of the side wall of the can; an annular butt-strip 5 encircling the bottom portion 3 and extending at its lower edge below the bottom surface of the portion 3 and forming a rest for the can,l a cylindrical side-wall-forming section 6 surmounting the portion 4 of the section 3 and surrounded by the upper edge-portion of the butt-strap 5; a downwardly-flaring breastportion 7 of frustro conical shape 1n crosssection surmounting the upper edge of the wall-forming section 6, the latter and the lower edge of the breast 7 being surrounded by a band 8; and an integral neck-and-lip portion 9 surmounting the upper, smaller end of the breast 7.
The sections 6 and 7 are each shown as formed of a single sheet of metal bent into circular shape, the metal forming the section 6 to form a cylinder and the metal forming the breast 7 to form the hollow frustro-conical section 7, with the respective edges ofthe metal sheets joined together in any desirable way to form liquid-tight joints represented at 10 and 11. These joints by preference are formed vin accordance with the method set forth in my application for United States patent executed concurrently herewith and involving the step-welding of the edges of thesheet arranged in overlapped relation to form a continuous Weld at the joints, and the subjection of the metal at the joint to a rolling action to harden the metal softened in the welding operation and smoothing it to render the joint readily cleansed, Figure 2 showing the finished jointI by a view in cross-section.
The neck-and-lip portion 9 is preferably constructed by drawing it from metal of any suitable gage and swedging its lower open portion to form a downwardly and outwardly-laring continuous flange 12 at which the section 9 overlaps the upper extremity of the section 7 and to which it may be secured in any desirable way, as for example by stepweldin it thereto to form a continuous annular uid-tight joint. i
.The bottom-forming member 3 is preferably formed of Bessemer metal shaped to present the form shown and form a relatively heavy bottom for the can. The sidewall-forming portion 6 is not required to be of as heavy gage metal as the bottom section 3, but as it is desired that the inner surface of the section 6 be vertically flush with the inner surface of the portion 4 of the section 3, I form the butt-strap 5 as shown, this feature of my invention being presented in anapplication for United States patent execute concurrently herewith. In accordance with the showing in t-he drawing, I
provide about the inner surface of the buttstrap 5, atthe portion thereof which opposes the portion 4 of the bottom 3, an annular recess "13 into which the portion 4 extends, this recess being of such depth that when the sections 3 and 6 are assembled, as shown, the inner 'surface ofA the section 6 and the inner surface of the portion 4 will be iush in a vertical plane. With the parts just referred to assembled as stated, they are welded together, preferably by step-welding them to form them into a unitary structure presenting a liquid-tight joint between these parts, it being preferred that the joint thus produced be tinned.
Referring now tothe joining of the sections 6 and 7, the band 8 is shown as provided with an upwardly and inwardly inclined annular flange 11i which overlaps the lower end of the section 7 at the outer surface ot the latter. rlhe band 8 is secured, in 4any desirable manner, at its lflange 14 to the breast 7, as for example by welding it thereto, and at its lower portion to the upper edge portion of the section 6 in any desirable manner as by soldering it to the latter.
It will be manifest from the foregoing that by construct-ing a can in accordance with my invention many advantages are obtainable, among which are, those portions of the can which are not required to be lconstructed ot relatively heavy material may be more lightly constructed, which involves reat savings not only in the cost of manuacture of the cans but also in transportation charges, and permits of the can being made of lighter weight thanpossible in the case of prior constructions. Thus, as shown in the drawing, the neck-and-lip section 9, and the bottom section 3, are constructed of heavier metal than the side sections 6 and 7, as the first-referred-to sections are subject to greater stresses in use than the wall sections 6 and 7. Another advantage of the construction is that l am enabled to construct the bottom-forming member of the can of Bessemer metal, whereas in milk cans as now commonly used it is necessary that the bottom sections be constructed of open hearth metal. Furthermore, danger of leakage of the contents of the can from the joint adjacent the bottom of the can is reduced to the minimum, as the joint formed as shown and above described is very etfective and durable.
Referring more particularly to the feature of forming the breast and neck portions separately, this is of great advantage especially in milk cans. lt often happens that cans are stacked and unless the metal of the necks is sufficiently heavy to withstand expansion by the jamming of' the covers into the necks, the covers become loose in the necks and milk is spilled in transit. By my invention vthe neck portion may be made of sufliciently thick metal to withstand the stresses to which it issubjected in use, including those to which it is subjected when the covers are jammed into the necks as stated, without rendering the cans unduly heavy, as the breast portion may be made of lighter metal sufficient to resist the stresses to which it is subjected.
While l have illustrated and described a particular construction embodying my invention, l do not wish to be understood as intending to limit it thereto as the saine may be variously modified and altered without departing from the spirit of my invention.
AWhat ll claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

A container comprising a lower section presenting a bottom proper from which rises at the marginal edges of the latter a continuous Hange portion, a side-wall-forming section superposing said lower section, and a band member surrounding the joint between said sections and flatwise opposed by the latter, said sections being united together, as by welding, and each unitedl to said band member.
3. A container comprising a lower section presenting a bottom proper from which rises at the marginal edges of the latter, a continuous flange portion, a side-wall-forming section of thinner metal than said flange of said lower section, and a band member surrounding the joint between said sections and flatwise opposed by the latter, the inner surface of said band member being recessed to receive the upper edge portion of said flange, saidfband bein united to both of said sections as by welding.

A. container comprising a lower section presenting a bottom proper from which rises at the marginal edges of the latter a continuous flange portion the outer surface ot which is a plain surface, a Side-wallforming section of thinner metal than said flange of said lower section, and a band member surrounding the joint between said sections and flatwise opposed by the latter, the inner surface of said band member being recessed to receive the upper edge portion of said flange, said band being united to both of said sections as by welding.

A container comprising a lower section presenting a bottom proper from which rises at the marginal edges of the latter, a continuous flange portion, a side-wall-forming section of thinner metal than said flange of said lower section, and a band member surrounding the joint between said sections and flatwise opposed by the latter, the inner surface of said band member being recessed to receive the upper edge portion of said flange and inset inwardly beyond the outer surface of said flange, said band being united to both of said sections, as by welding. l

A container comprisinga lower section presentingr a bottom proper from which rises at the marginal edges of the latter, a continuous flange portion, a side-wall-forming section of thinner metal than said flange of said lower section and in its entirety extending above said lower section, and a'band member surrounding the joint between said sections and flatwise opposed by the latter, the inner surface of saidband member being recessed to receive the upper edge portion of said flange, said band being united t both of said sections as b welding.

A container comprising a side-wallforming section, a breast section, and a band surrounding the joint between said sections and provided lwith an upwardly and inwardly-flaring flange at which said band overlaps the lower edge of said breast, said band being located wholly at the outer surfaces of said breast and section and connected with said section and with said breast.

A container comprising a side-wallforming section, a breast sectlon, and a band surrounding the joint between said sections and provided with an upwardly and inwardly-flaring lflange at which said band overlaps the lower edge of said breast, said band being Welded to said breast and soldered to said section.
10. A container comprising a breast portion and a neck ortion surmounting said breast portion, sald breast portion and said neck portion being formed separatel and united together, said neck portion being of thicker metall than said breast portion.
11. A container comprising a, breast portion and a neck portion surmounting said breast portion, said breast portion and said neck portion being formed separately, said necklportion being formed with a downwardly and outwardly-inclined Harige portion at which it overlaps the upper edge portion of said breast and at which these parts are united, the metal of said neck portion being thicker than said breast.

A container comprising a breast portion and a neck and lip portion surmounting said breast portion, said breast ortion and said neckvand lip ortion being ormed separately, said neel? and lip portion being formed with a downwardly and outwardlyinclined flange portion at which it overlaps the upper edge portion of said breast and at which these parts are united, the metal of said neck and lip portion being thicker than said breast.
