Description
T. McCARTY.
Breech-Loading Fire-Arm.
Patented Mar. 11, 1837.
n. PETERS. PHOTO-LITNOGR UNITED STATES THOMAS MOGARTY, OF ELMIRA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE CONSTRUCTION AND MODE 0F LOADING FIRE-ARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147, dated March 11, 1837.
To all whom, it may concern:
Elmira, in the county of Ohemung and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in the Construction and Mode of Loading Fire- Arms, of which the following is aspecification.
The tube-guns have their loads put in tubes made for that purpose. The tubes are made of suitable metal and long enough to contain the whole charge, with an arm to reach out beyond the thickness of the barrel to receive percussion caps or pills and the application of a cock. The tubes are solid at the end where the arm is placed. The barrels of said guns are reamed out for the tube and a seat for the arm of said tubes, so that the tube, its arm, and the barrel are all flush at the butt of the barrel. \Vhen said tubes are inserted in the barrel, it is secured by means of a stirrup pass.
ing round the end of the barrel and substantially fastened to the barrel by means of bolts or otherwise. The said stirrup is so calculated that, when the gun is fired, by moving a catch, it will swing off from over the end of the barrel and admit of the blank tube being removed, and another one, loaded, is inserted. Then it swings back to its former place and secures the tube, so that it can be fired. The breech or wood part of said gun is fastened to the stirrup.
For further particulars see the model herewith transmitted.
This gun possesses great advantages over the common gun. Be it known that I, THOMAS MOCARTY, of
It can be fired ten times per minute, if necessary, the tubes, as many in number as may be desired, being all previously loaded and prepared at leisure, and deposited in a convenient cartridge-box, most convenient for use, so that the loads are all correct. It is also perfectly safe, as it cannot go off when loading, or before the gun is all right and prepared to be discharged. The fixtures do not burden the gun. They are equally adapted to light and heavy guns. It has been satisfactorily tested, one of the guns made by the inventor now beingin use in the village of Elmira.
The part which I claim as my invention is- The manner of loading the gun by the use of the tube containing the whole charge, with the arm reaching out, so as to be fired'by an outside lock, or otherwise, which tube remains until the load is discharged, then to be replaced by another similarly loaded. and also the manner of securing the tubes by means of the stirrup.
This invention is equally applicable to the rifle, the musket, the shotgun, pistols, or can non. In rifles a ball larger than the bore can be safely used.
Dated November 28, 1836.
