Specification of Letters Patent No. 1,106, dated March 16, 1839.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that LELON B. BUTTERFIELD,

of Brattleboro, in the county of Windham and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Constructions of ManyChambered Firearms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.

In many-chambered guns the cylinders are usually, longer and the calibers larger for smooth bored guns than for rifles. My arrangement is such, that a shorter cylinder and a proper barrel of smaller caliber may be substituted when the owner wishes to change his piece into a rifle, and vice versa from a rifle to a smooth bore. I effect this in the following manner:

I construct a smooth bored gun attaching the barrel (A) to the frame which supports the cylinder (B) by screwing it into the latter as is done in Jaquiths rifles and several other guns. I construct a rifle barrel (C) of smaller bore and with a longer screw at its rear end. I make a metallic block (D) which fits into and partly fills (as in E) the space occupied by the larger cylinder. This block operates as a nut to hold the rifle barrel firmly in its place and at the same time prepares the piece to receive a shorter cylinder adapted to the rifle. The thickness of this block should equal the difference in lfngth between the long and the short cylinc er.

\Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The above described block or nut for filling part of the space occupied by the longer cylinder and fitting the gun to receive a rifle barrel and a shorter cylinder.
