HAND BAG.
Application led August 7, 1922. Serial No. 580,244.
To all whom it 'may concern.'
Be it known that l. Nici-iones Wennen a citizen of the TJnited States, and a resident of the city of N ew York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and lmproved Hand Bag, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention has relation to hand bags and has particular reference to an improvement in the construction of ladies hand bags or pocketb'ooks.
One of the principal features of the present invention resides in the manner of attaching the outer covering material7 lining and gnssets to the frame in order to minimize the wear thereon.
As a further object the invention contemplates a hand bag structure in which the gussets are entirely concealed. housed and protected by the `frame when the same is in closed position.
rThe invention further aims to provide a hand bag construction which affords a wider openingiof the compartments to admit of ready access thereto for removing and placing articles therein.
its a. still further object the invention contemplates a hand bag in which the frame jaws extend entirely throughout the height of the bag to afford a protection for the body and to lend greater strength to the structure.
As a still further object the invention aims to produce a hand bag or pocketbook which is extremely simple in its construction. inexpensive to manufacture, andvwhich is strong and durable.
With the above recited and other objects in view. the invention resides in the novel construction set forth in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the appended elaims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustratedl herein to the full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in which the claims are expressed.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a front view of a hand bag constructed in accordance with the invention, illustrating the same in closed condition.
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof.
Fig. 8 is a plan view of the same in open position.
Fig, t is a side view of the same in Open position.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail sectional fragmentary view taken approximately on the line 5-5 of Fig. 8.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary detail transverse sectional view taken approximately on the line 6-6 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken approximately on the line 7-7 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference,r 10 and 11 designate a pair of frame jaws which are pivotally connected as at 12 and are provided with interengageable clasp elements 13 and 14 for retaining the same in closed condition. The frame jaws are of channel construction and are designed to receive in* the channel portion thereof the outer covering material 15, the inner lining material 16 and the free edges 17 of the plaited gnssets 18, which elements are preferably held within the channel portion of the aws by a suitable adhesive such as glue, cement, or the like. A partition 19 is secured at its opposite edges to the central plait 2O of each gusset 18 and said partition consists of two strips of material 21 and 22 which are fastened together at their lower ends by the stitching 23 with the upper ends free for relative separation to provide therebetween a change pocket 24. The outer faces of the strips and 21 are covered by a facing material 25 and the change pocket 24 is provided with a lining 25. Suitable channeled reinforcing bars 2i' embrace the upper free edges of the strips 21 and 22 as well as the lining 26 and the facing strips 25. The central or intermediate plait 20 serves as gusset-s and side walls for the change pocket 24C. A covering and retaining flap 28 is secured by the stitching 29 to the strip 2O adjacent its upper ends and is adapted to extend over the upper edge of the strip 22. The free end of the flap 28 is provided at one extremity with the socket member 30 of a separable fastening element, the head member 31 of which is attached to the strip 22 whereby the flap when fastened by the separable fastening elements prevents accidental opening of the change pocket. The central partition 19 serves to subdivide the bag body into separate segmental compartments 32 and 33,
While the plaited gussets 18 constitute means for limiting the opening of ythe Due to the tact that the frame uws extend throughout the full height of the beg body, it Wide opening of the compartments 32 and 33 may be effected to facilitate the placing Aand removal of articles Within and from the bag body. A suitable strep 34 may be attached at its opposite ends as at to one `of the treme jaws for the purpose oi providing a han@ le for carrying the-bug.
l claim:
l, As i new artiele of insnutscture, a hand bagy comprising t body Vand pivoted treme jeffs extending throughout the height of the bag body, vpleited gussets at the 4opposite sides or" the bag body, and e eentralfpartiti-on `secu-red at its opposite ='edges lto the cent-'ral .plait et eaeh gusset to provide separate segmental compartments iin the b'ag body, the said central ,partition consisting of u double wall the plies of 'which 1re stitched together medielly and transversely to leave the seme open at the upper 'end delinmg therebetween together with the lcentiul Vgussets plaits, t change pocket.
2. its :t new article ot munufaeture, a hund beg comprising a bag body and pivoted treme jews extending throughout the height et the beg body, plaited gussets at the opposite sir-des ot lthe bag body, a central pertition secured at its opposite edges to the central plait o1" each gusset to provide separate segmental eempartments in the beg body, ythe said central .partition 'consisting oit e double .mll the plies of which are stitched together medinlly `and transversely to Llezwe the same open the upper end deiining therebetween together with the central :gussets Iplsi'ts, a change pocket, and a lisp secured to on'eof seid Wells and detaehtbly engageeble With the opposite Wall for retaii'iing tl'i'e 'change pocket in closed Condition.
