Description
H. PALMiERl.
Roof-Submergers for Fire-Pipes. $10,147,966, Patented Feb.24,11874.
HENRY PALMIERI, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
lMPRQVEiVIENT IN ROOF-SUBMERGERS FOR FIRE-PIPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 14?,966, dated February 24, 1874; application filed October 17, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY PALMIERI, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roof Submergers for Fire-Pipes; and I do hereby declare that the following-is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making a part of this application.
My invention relates to certain improve ments in stationary fire-pipes for buildings. It has for its object to provide an economic and practical device for drenching or submerging the roofs of burning buildings, or those in close proximity thereto, and adapted to ready use as an auxiliary to my swift-connecting fire-pipe, patented to me March 4:, 1873, No. 136,537; and to these ends my invention consists in securing to one of the roof-branches of my patented fire -pipe an iron pipe, of suitable size, which shall be secured to the roof and travel to about the center thereof, where it is curved upwardly at about right angles, terminating in a bell shape or inverted cone. To the interior and near the bottom of this bell or cone shaped mouth is arranged a suitable bearing or brace, to hold the axle of a spreading-wheel, which is thereby allowed to revolve, and is retained in a vertical position.
To enable those skilled to more readily understand my invention, I will proceed to describe the same, referring by letters to the accompanyin g drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section, showing its application, in connection with my fire-pipe, to an ordinary building; and Fig. 2 is a con tral vertical section in detail of the bellmouth or rose with a short. piece of roof-pipe attached.
Similar letters indicate like parts in the different views.
A represents a portion of my patented firepipe secured to the front of a building, and extending up to the roof, where it has two branches, one, a, for the coupling of a hose, and the other secured to the roof-pipe B,
which is provided with a valve or cock, 0, by means of which the flow through the pipe B may be controlled. The pipe B is run along the roof to about the center thereof, and; is secured at suitable points by fastenings I). At D the pipe A is upturned, making a curve, and terminates in a cone shaped mouth-piece, 'E, which may be permanently secured to the pipe 13, or secured thereto by a screw-thread, in order that it may be taken off when necessary. Within the cone E, at or near its lower end, is arranged any suitable bracket-bearing, c, and on the outside are arranged two or more arms, (1, which are so arranged or shaped as to form a bearing, as seen at 6. Located in the bearings c and e is the shaft f of a spreading -wheel, F, which is shaped after the fashion of an ordinary propeller. The shaft of this wheel is secured in place by suitable screw-nuts g, or
iot-herwise, as may be deemed best.-
"The pipe A is to be made of wrought-iron, and should be about two and a half inches in diameter, the vertical bend extending about three feet feet above the plane of the roof. The cone or funnel mouth E, and the shaft of the propeller should be galvanized to avoid rust, 85c.
Of course I do not wish to limit myself to the exact details of construction, asmy de vice may be varied in many particulars without departing from the spirit of my inven tion.
The operation of my improved device is as follows: A supply of water being furnished to the pipe A, the cook or valve 0 is opened, which may be operated from the street in a suitable manner, when the force exerted drives the water through the conduitpipe B and up through the cone shaped mouth E against the under side of the propeller or spreader F, which immediately begins to ro tate within its bearings, and, by its rotary action, spreads and throws the waterradially over the top edge of the mouth E.
The quantity of water sprayed or the thick ness of the sheet may be regulated by the distance of the wings of the propeller from the flaring top edgeof the cone E,and conand rotary spreading-wheel F, substantially sequently the bearings and shaft of the proas and for the purpose set forth. peller may be so constructed and arranged as In testimony whereof I have hereunto set to admit of ready adjustability. my hand and seal. What I claim as new, and desire to secure H. PALMIERI. L. s.] by Letters Patent, is- Inpresence of- The combination, with the curved conduit- JACOB DU Bors,
pipe B, of the cone shaped mouth piece E O. M. BENJAMIN.
