WILLIAM S. STAIR, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO SHIPLEY CONSTCTION AND SUPPLY COMPANY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
BEFRIGERATOR-DOOB LOCK.
Application led March 14, 1922. Serial No. 543,721.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. STAIR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Brooklyn, county of Kings, and
State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Refrigerator-Dor Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention which forms the subject of 1o this application for Letters Patent is animprovement in locks designed especially for refrigerator doors and a correct comprehension of its construction and functions will show its applicability, not only to such doors, but for other uses where similar con ditions obtain.
In the case of large refrigerator doors it is important that a strong reliable lock be provided that will not jar loose and permit the door to open or lose its insulating value at the joint. lt frequently happens, moreover, that the doors after remaming tightly closed or locked for any length of time stick or freeze which makes it difficult to open them, and finally repeated openingand closin with the attendant manipulation of the loc 'ng means requires that any device used as a lock shall be strongly constructed and immune to the troubles that inevitably rea0 sult from undue wear or-injury.
To meet all of these practical requirementsl have devised a locking device for doors of this character which being distinguished from those heretofore used for .the l5 purpose mainly in the form and relation of its component parts may be most readily understood from the drawing and the detailed description of the same which follows:
Fig.- 1 is a perspective view of my improved lock.
- H' Fig. 2 is a side view of the same looking from the left, and
Fig. 3 is a partly diagrammatic view of parts of a door, the jamb and the locking mechanism in two indicated positions.
In carrying out my invention l employ two plates 1 and 2, the former adapted for attachment to the jarnb, the latter to the door proper. Plate 1 is formed or provided 0 with two upright plates or brackets 3 which afford bearings for a spindle 4. The upper end of this spindle carries a casting properly secured thereto which has a rounded hub 5 surrounding the spindle 4 and side u anges 6 and 7, the former constituting virwheel 9 with theteeth of which engages a 60 pin l0 set in thc end of the hub. A spring 11 surrounds the spindle and has its ends fast to the lower bracket 3 and to the ratchet wheel 9. By this means the spindle may have imparted to it a tendency t'o turn about its axis, such tendency being adjustable by turning the ratchet wheel 9 in reference to the locking pin 10.
The door plate 2 carries two brackets 12 which aHord bearings for a casting or forging composed of a hub formed with a cam part 13 and a curved arm 14. A handle 15 of any proper or desired character extends to the ri ht from the hub or cam 13 and to this han le is connected a rod 16 which extends through the door and is connected with a spring 17. The rod 16 has a head 18 which, under the tension of the spring 17, tends to draw the handle 15 towards the handle side of the door or into its normal position. y s
As thus designed and assembled the parts described function as follows: When the door 19 is closed the curved arm 14 come-s over and in contact with the hub 5 whereupon the inner oint 21 of the cam 13 engages 'the right and fiange 7 of the hub 5 which turns said hub and thereby throws thecurved arm 8 towards the door or to the right. The end of arm 8, referably carrying a roller, travels over t-)lie outer edge of cam 13 asis shown in Fig. 3. By this means the door is firmly and effectively locked and will so remain until the handle 15' is operated.
To unlock the door the handle 15 is pulled from the handle side or pushed from the opposite side away from the face of the door with the 'result that the curved arm 14 l is shifted and its end engages with and 100 forces the flan e 6 towards and against the plate 1 attac ed to the door jamb 20. Should the door have stuck or frozen this starts it up and it also turns the curved arm 8 to the left or out of overlapping engage- 105 ment with the cam 13, which unlocks the door 19 and permits it to be pulled or pushed O en pThe form and character of certain of the above-described parts not being of the es- 110 sence ot my invention ma be greatly varied. 'lhis refers more'l particu arlyto the handle used, the kind ot spring that acts upon it and otherl minor. details. llhat, however, l claim as .of my invention and now seek protection for is l., A locking means for doors comprising, in combination, a pivoted member on the door provided with a handle and movable about its pivotal support in a plane-at right f angles to the door, a pivoted member on the door jamb alsomovable at right angles to the j amb, and` formed with a projecting part with which the door member engages, and by which, when said door member is moved, it vvill be turned about its pivotal support, and a projection on the said jamb member that is forced over and into overlapping enga ement with the said door member to there y form a lock which prevents the out-y Ward movement ot the door member.
2. A lccg means for doors comprising, in' combination, a spring actuated pivoted 7 member mounted on the door, provided with a handle and movable in a plane at right angles tothe door, and 'a springactuated member pivotally mounted on the door jamb,
and movable at right angles to the door jamb, and formed vvith a projecting part with which the door member engages, and by which, when said door member is moved, it will be turned about its pivotal support,
and a projection on said jamb member that is forced over and into overlapping engagement vvith the said door member to. there y to a lock vvhich prevents the outward movement of the door membero Y in combination, a plate havin the 3,' 'A locking means tor.v doors comprising, v brackets adapted `tor attacent to the oor jamb, La spindle mounted in said brackets and a member hav a projecting part and mounted thereon, a plate having brackets adaptedior attacent to the door, a spindle mounted in said brackets and a member hav ing a cam portion and an arm mounted on the pindle, said cam being adapted, when ooris closed, to engage and turn the spindle memberon the jamb and to thereby swing the projection `forming a part-thereof into voverlapping engagement vvith itself and thereby iorm a lock 4 4k A lccg means tor doors comprising,
Vvin combination, .a plate having brackets '1 adapted: forattachment to the door-jamb, a
- spindle 'mount/ed insaidbrackets,- a member 'A mounted thereon', and ha y side danges and a curved arm,1a plat e ha ,bmclrets v l adapted for attacenttathedcor, aspira-vVA Y invente dle mounted in said brackets, a member mounted thereon having a cam suriace and a curved arm, said camsurtace being so formed that when the door is closed itengages one ot the llan es on and turns the spindle member on vt e jamb and swings its curved arm into overlapping engagement vvith itself and thereby forms a lock.
5. A locking means for doors comprising, in combination, a plate adapted for attachment to the door-yamb, a revoluble spring actuated member having side danges and a curved arml mounted onsaid plate, a plate adapted ior attacent to the door, a casting revolubly .mounted thereon and having `a cam portion to engage vvith one of the ilanges onthe spring actuated jamb member and a curved arm to engage with the other tlange, anda handle tor turning said casting.
8. A locking means for doors comprising, in combination, a plate adapted for attachkment to the door jamb, a `revoluble spring actuated member having side Hanges, one of site directions, a handle attached to the revoluble door member and a sp acting to dravv the same toward the tace ot the door. p
7.. A locking means for doors comprising, in combinatioman arm pivoted to the door and havingl a cam port1on,|and a movable member on the door jamby having a projecting part thereon, which by the enga ement of the said .cam with the mova le member on the door jamb vis forced into locking engagement with the said arm.
8. A locking means for doors comprising, l
in combination, anarm pivoted to the door and'having a cam portion, and a cooperating spring1 actuated arm with dan ed lextensions adapted to be forced into ocg engagement with the arm which is pivoted to the door when the latter while its cam is in engagement with one of the said flanges isturned. i
