Description
' W. BRYANT.
Devices for Paring Horses Honfs. -No .l47,896.
Patented Feb. 24, 1874.
I/iirzarrem UNITED STATES PATENT ()rrron.
WASHINGTON BRYANT, OF BATESVILLE, ARKANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR PARING HORSES HOOFS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,896, dated February 24, 1874; application filed January 17, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,WAsrrINGToN BRYANT, of Batesville, in the county of Independence and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Tools for Trimming Horses Hoofs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a top view of my hoof-trimmer. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional, and Fig. 4 a detail, view of the same.
This invention has relation to devices for trimming horses hoofs preparatory to applying the shoes and it consists in a rotary trimmer, a flanged holder therefor, and a hoofholding ring, combined as will be hereinafter explained; also, in making the hoof-holding ring removable from its flange, so that rings corresponding in their diameter to different-sized hoofs can be used, as will be hereinafter shown.
The following is a description of my invention In the annexed drawings, A represents a circular head, through which several trimmingknives, a, are passed, which are made adjustable, like the knives of a hand-plane, for taking 01f difi'erent thicknesses of shavings. Four knives are shown in the drawin gs, but a greater or less number may be used. This cutter-head, which presents a flat bottom surface, is centrally secured on a short shaft, 13, which is adapted to fit into the socket of a common breast-brace, for rotating it, and which has its bearing in a tube, 0. This tube 0 has four curved arms radiating from its lower end, which have secured to them a circular flange, b, of greater width than the thickness of the head A. The flange or hoop b surrounds the trimming-head A, and allows the latter. to rotate freely in it. G designates a ring of suitable thickness and diameter, which ring is securedto the inner side of the flange i2, beneath the head A, by means of pins 0 c and a springoatch, c.
To use this instrument, the bottom or cutting face of the head A is placed upon the hoof, the latter being properly held up bythe shoer, and a curved shield, D, is adjusted against the wrist of the left hand, in which the hoof is held 5 then, by means of a common brace af fixed to the shaft B, the shoer turns the cutter-head, and trims perfectly even the hoof.
The ring G, in which the hoof is held and centered, is removable for the purpose of substituting in its stead rings of different diameters interiorly.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The cutter-head. A on a shaft which has its bearings in a tube, 0, whose arms carry a flange, b, surrounding the cutter-head, constructed and adapted for trimming the hoofs of animals, substantially as described.
2.- The removable ring Gr, attached to flange b, and combined with the cutter-head A, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WVASHINGTON BRYANT.
