NITED STATES i ATENT OFFICE.
HENRY A. TRIPP AND WALTER TRIPP, OF EAST WILLIAMSON, NEW YORK- FRUIT AND VEGETABLE PARER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 259,342, dated June 13, 1882.
Application filed March 9, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY A. TRIPP and WALTER TRIPP, citizens of the United States of America, residing at East Williamson, in the county of Wayne and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Fruit and Vegetable Parers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, and toletters orfigures ofreference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a top view. Fig. 3 is an isonietrical projection of part of the standard, showing the inclined planes for operating the knife and doffer. Fig. 4 is an isometrical projection of the doft'er. Fig.5 is a longitudinal section through the center of the head of the doffer. Fig. 6 is an end view of the head of the dolfer. Fig. 7 is a plan of the paring-knife and adjustable gage. Fig. Sis a vertical section taken on the lineg y of Fig. 7. Fig. 9 is an isometrical projection of the gage.
Our invention relates more particularly to the construction of the head, whereby the guard is made adjustable, so as to take up the wear incidenttouseandgrindingto maintainastraight edge, and to an improvement in the construction of the dofl'er, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
A represents a standard of any suitable construction, provided with means for securing it to a table or bench, an extension for sustainin g a revolving table, D, said table carrying an The upper end of the arm B terminates in a head, E, provided with an oblong opening opposite the fork. In the side of the head projecting through the slot is placed the knife F, which is made adjustable by means of a screw, G, passing through the slot and into the head, clamping the knife in place. In the upper side of the head and projecting through the slot is placed a guard, H, which is slotted in the center for adjustment, and secured to the head by a screw, 1; or the guard may be secured adjustably in any convenient manner in a suitably-constructed head. This guard should be made of hardened steel, its purpose .beingto protect the head from wearing into an irregular form and to receive the wear upon its edge, which may be kept straight by grinding and setting the guard forward so as to maintain the original position of the guard-edge, and thus maintain the original thickness of the paring.
The doft'er-a-rm O is set in bearing-lugs on the revolving table D, and is held back from contact with the contents of the fork, except when moved forward by the projection J, coming in contact with the inclined plane K, as the table revolves, which throws the doft'er in and dislodges the contents of the fork.
In order to protect the fruit or vegetable on the fork from being bruised by friction, a cap or head, L, is pivoted on top of the doifer-arm O, and forms a freely-revolving head for contact with the article upon the fork, thus preventing any damage from friction.
\Ve have shown our improvement in connection with a revolving table, but may use it with any other form of parer.
H avin gthus described ourin venti0n,we claim as new- 1. In an apple-parer, an adjustable guard for protecting the knife-head, constructed and arranged to be set up, after grinding, to maintain an even thickness of paring, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a fruit or vegetable parer, a dofier provided with a revolving head for preventing bruises by friction, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY A. TRIPP. WALTER TRIPP.
Witnesses E. W. KELLY, JOHN W. Minute.
