Description

Patented Dec. 25, 1923.
. PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT C. RUSSELL, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
CARD
INDEX.
Application filed November 1Q, 1922. Serial In. 600,930.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Roam C. Russian), a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburglnin the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Card Indexes; and I do hereby declare the followin to be a full, clear, and exact description 0 the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it a rtains to make and use the same.
T is invention relates to improvements in card indexes of the visible ty particularly to means which Wlll operate to protect the free edge portion of the cards,, one object of the invention being to provide a protector which may readily and quickly be applied and remova'bly secured to a card of the index and operate to protect the free edge portion of the card from becoming soiled or injured; which maybe easily cleaned, and which may also be utilized tp hold another or supplemental card.
With this and other objects. in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,-
Figure 1 is a rear view of an indEx showing the application of my improvements thereto.
Figure 2 is a front view of the same.
Figure 3 is a front view of one of the cards and its support with the protector removed.
Figure 4 is a view .of a supplemental card.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the protector.
Figure 6 is a 'transverse sectional view showing the protector in place on an index card and ,operating to also attach another or supplemental card to the index card.
Figure' Fi an enlarged detail view illustrating one form of fastening means for the protector to a card and Figure 8 is an e ar ed detail-view showin a difierent form 0 fastening means.
In Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the drawin and also in Figure 6, I have shown a com ined index card 1 and at! ext 2, the card having hinge connection wit thesupport and'the latter provided with lateral tongues 3 to enter guide-ways in a suitable holder not shown. The su port member 2 is provided with an upwar ly projecting tongue 4 and and more a slot 5 is provided for the accommodation of the ton e 4 of another combined device whereby t e combined devices may when assembled in a holder, have interlocking connection with each other. The construction is such-that the card member 1 will overlie a portion of the support member 2 and form in effect a shallow pocket 6.
.My improved protector 7 is made of flexible and referablv transparent material, such as eel uloid and is bent to form ap roximately parallel members 8 and 9, the utter having ater width than the other. By
reason 0 the flexibility of the material composing the protector 7 it may be caused to grasp the lower portion of the card to which it is applied but this grasping or clip action is not epended upon to retain the protector in place on the card. When the protector is applied to the card, the wider member of the same will preferably be disposed in front of the card and this member is so out near its respective ends as to provide resilient tongues 10 which will projectthrough openings 11 in the card and may enter notches 12 in the free edge of the rear member 8 of the protector, thus locking said protector to the card but permitting its removal when necessary by'merely pressing forward the spring or resilient tongues 10. In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figure each tongueis made approximately V- shape by cutting a V-shaped slot in the material of the protector near each end thereof, thus providing a single sprin tongue near each end of the protector. l f desired however, two spring tongues such as indistated at 10'- Figure B may be rovided near each end of the protector an the form of the openings in the card and in the back member of the protector may be changed accordingly.
The rotector 7 not only serves to guard the car against soiling or injury but it may also be utilized to receive and hold a sulpplemental card 13 disposed in front of tie main card 1 and provided with openings 14 for the passa of the spring tongues of the protector. en a supplemental card is thus mounted on a main card, the upper edge of said supplemental card will enter the shallow pocket 6 formed near the juncture of said main card with the support 2 as indicated in Figure 6 and thus the upper ortion of the supplemental card will be eld in place against the main card 1.
Having frilly described my invention what" I claim as new antl desire to seeure by Letters Patent, is:
1 A protector for the edge portion of an index card, consisting of :1 single piece of resilient material bent upon itself to provide approximately parallel members, one of said members provided intermediate of its ends with a resilient projection which normally projects beyond the face of said member, whereby it may spring into engagement with a shoulder on a card disposed between said members.
2. A protector for the edge portion of an index card, consisting of a single piece of resilient material bent to form two approximately parallel members, one of said members having a tongue to pass through the card and the other member constructed to permit interlocking relation of said tongue thereto.
3. A protector for the edge portion 01" an index card consisting of a single piece of resilient material bent to forr'ntwo appr0ximately parallel members, one wider than the 2' other, the wider member having inwardly projecting resilient tongues and the narrower member having notches to receive said tongues.
4. The combination with an index card and a support therefor. said support having a part disposed approximately parallel with a portion of the card and cooperating with the latter to form a pocket, of a mem, ber engaging the lower or free portion of the card and serving to protect the latter, and a supplemental card supported at one edge by said member and having its other edge portion entering said pocket.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two sulr scribing witnesses.
