IMPROVEMENT IN WA$H-BO|LER ATTACHMENTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,786, dated February 24, 1874; application filed June 19, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID J OHN PHILLIPs, of Stockton, in the county'of San Joaquin and State of California, have invented an Improved ash-Boiler Attachment, of which the following is a specification:

This invention consists in the combination of a bottom plate of peculiar construction, adapted to permit the water to pass downward, but not to return, excepting through the discharging-pipes,with a covering-plate of peculiar construction, adapted to support the clothing, as will be fully'described hereinafter.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation, partially in section, of a boiler having my improvements applied thereto; Fig. 2, a plan view of the same 5 and Fig. 3 a transverse sectional elevation.

A representsa vertical oval band or rim, adapted to be placed within the ordinary washboiler, provided at each end with transverse plates a a attached to it near its center or below it, from which rise the discharging-pipes a. a The adjacent edges of these plates are bent downward nearly to the lower edge of the band or rim, so that two chambers, m m, are form ed, with an intervening space, n, as shown. 13 represents the supportin g-plate, which rests, when in place, upon the projections a a of the plate a. It is provided with a series of perforations, b, at regular intervals, each series of which is covered by an arched strip or bar, b. A suitable recess, also, is provided at each end, to adapt the plate to fit about the base of the discharging-pipes. G 0 represent caps, having curved ends for discharging the water upon the clothing, which are capable of being revolved for the purpose of discharging the water in any desired direction.

The operation is as follows: The attach ment being placed in a boiler, and the clothing having been placed therein with a suitable quantity of water, soap, 850., the action of boilin g causes the steam and hot water to pass up through the discharge-pipes in the usnalmannor, the rettu'n of the liquid being permitted through the perforated plate and the space n.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the part A, provided with plate a, having down-turned flanges,-

pipes a having revolving caps, with the perforated plate B, having the protecting-strips b, as shown, for the purpose set forth.
