Be it known that I, JOHN DANIEL, a citizen of the Unitedv States, lresiding at Milwaukee, inthe county .of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chute- Operating Means, of which the following is a specification.
Certain engineering undertakings of 5the present day are attended `with remarkable and unusual requirements in concrete mixing. As an instance, the rapid laying of concrete roads has progressed to thepoint where as much as seventy linear feet of six.- teen-foot pavement have been put down per hour, and indeed a maximum of one hundred twenty six feet has been reached on certain work.
Obviously, operations like the foregoing necessitate the mixing of concrete in huge batches as large for instance as fifty live cubic feet, and therapid discharging of said batches from the mixing plant.
lViththe foregoing in view, the present invention comprises improved means whereby the discharging device of extremelylar'ge concrete mixers may be operated by power, and operated with speed as well. Y f
In the carrying out ofthe invention, I contemplate broadly certain lprovisions whereby themotion transmitted` to the mixing drum of the mixer may be employed, for imparting movement tothe discharge chute ofthe mixi'ngeniachine, whereby to throw vthe said lchiite 4into a position for discharging action andto position the same inoperative to perform its discharge function. i

yTo those versed in the. art the operation of the kcustomary rotating Vdrum A `of concrete mixing means at present commonly lused is obvious, the aggregates being received in the drumy and subjected to agitation by devices of the latter in the well known manner. The discharge chute for the'drumv or mixing machine A is designated. B and is pivotaly mounted at l upon a' stationary guard or splash plate so asv to incline inwardly into the drum to act as a mixing element, in which position it is inoperative for discharge purposes. The inwardly inclined position is illustrated dotted lines, whilst iniull lines the chute B is shown in its discharging position. The chute B may be operated manually by means of a lever 2 extending `from the shaft 3 supported on the frame work 10 which shaft 3 is connected by an arm l and link 5 with the chute B. GbviOUsIy, the rocking of the arm 4, outwards will shift the chute B into the dotted line position of `Figure 2, fr "om its .full line position. The manual lever 2 will not ordinarilybe used forthe operation of the chute B, though 'of utility vin emergencies and for the restoration of the chute to its normal position inactive for discharging purposes. i
The power actuating means for the chute is comprised of trips 6 which are spiined upon the shaft 3 and are shiftable in opposite directions by means of a hand rod 7 connected with the upper endsof spaced bars 8, one of whichis located at each side of the chute B and suitably pivoted at 9 on the frame work 10 of the machine, the latT ter carrying the part to which the chute Y B is pivoted. The trips 6 compriseffmem bers adapted to slide onV the shaft 3 under the iniiuence of actuation of the/parts 7 and 8, whereby either one of said trips may be brought into the path of actuating` means on the drum A, said means according to one construction comprising rollers 11 suitably journaled upon brackets 12 which are 6EL and thereby cause actuation ofthe shaft 3 so as to throw the chute B from an inop- `erative position for discharging, into its dis charging position. A movement of the trips in an opposite direction will carry the other trips into the path of movement of the rollers 11 thus causing a shifting or movement of the chute Bfrom its discharging position into non-discharging Under the conditions the load of operation of the chute B may by the aforesaid mechanism be placed upon the drum itself, and the latter being power driven no difficulty will be experienced in securing the desired operation of said chute. This is true irrespective of the quantity of materials of the aggregate being mixed falling upon the chute B, if the latter is of the type constituting a mix ing element. v
, In Figures 5, 6 and 7, there is shown a somewhat circular cam actuating element 14 aiiixed to the ring 13V of the drum A and adapted to engage a trip 15 in the form of an arm mounted on the shaft 3. A hand lever 16 on a shaft 17 is adapted to operate the yoke 18 which engages the grooved head 15a of the trip 15, wherebyY to shift the trip l5' into arposition wherein its roller 15b will enga-ge the cam element 14. The latter during theturning of the drum A will rock the arm 15 and cause rockingof the shaft 3 suiiiciently to move the chute connected therewith,l to a discharging position. Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is: 1 Y
1. In combination a rotary mixer, a normally stationary chute coacting therewith, an actuating element for said chute on the mixer, trip means for moving the chute from one position -to another, and means for adj ustingat will lthe trip means and said element relatively to each other so as to cause operation of the chute.
2. In combination a mixing machine comprising a rotative drum, a movable chute Y associatedwithsaid drum, means forV supporting the chute adjacent to thedrum, said 'chute being adapted to discharge the contents of the drum, and means for effecting movement of the chute by the drum.
3. In combination, a mixing machine, comprising a rotative drum, al movable chute supported independently of said drum,
adapted for discharging the same and for cooperating with the contents of the drum for mixing purposes, and means for causing movement of said chute into discharging or mixing positions, operated' from the drum.
4. In a mixing machine, al power operated agitating device, a discharging means therefor, a trip connected with the discharging means and normally inactive,-and means on the agitating device to engage said trip for actuating the discharging means, andmeans to adjust the last means and ltrip relatively to one another for coaction as aforesaid.

A mixing machine, comprising a power operated agitating device, a. chute mounted for co-operation with the agitating device, an actuating element for the said chute on the agitating device, a trip means connected with the chute, and means tormove said trip means into cooperation with the actuating element at will for operatingthe the agitating device.

In a mixing machine, in combination, a mixing drum ofthe power operated type, a reversible chute, adjustable to occupy' discharging and non-discharging positions .de-
pendent on the position of the reversal, and coacting with the drum fordischarging it, and means intermediate the drum and chute whereby to reversibly operate the chute by the drum. Y
8. In a mixing machine, in combination, a mixing drum of the power operated type, a reversib-ly operating chute coacting with said drum for discharging purposes, said chute adjustable to occupy discharging and non-discharging positions dependent on the direction of reversal, and means intermediate the drum and chute whereby to. operate the chute from the drum, comprising a trip and actuating element, the trip being movable into and out of the path of the actuating element.
9. In a mixing machine, in comb-ination, a mixing drum of the power operated type, a reversibly operable chute coacting with said drum for discharge purposes, means intermediate` the drum and chute whereby to operate the chute from the drum, comprising an actuating element on the drum, and trip means for the chute at opposite sides of the axis of the drum, cooperative with said actuating element, with means to render either tripy means active in relation to the actuating element.
10. In a mixing machine, a combination of a rotary mixing drum, a chute coo-peralting with said drum and means to operate the chute from the drum consisting of trip means on one of said parts and an actuating element on the other, and anti-friction means intermediate the two, with means to at will place the trip means and actuating element in and out of cooperation.
ll. ln combination, a mixing drum, a chute to cooperate with the contents of the drum substantially as described, and means to operate the chute from the drum consisting of a shaft, a movable trip on the shaft, means projecting from the drum to engage said trip to operate the latter, and connections between the shaft and the chute to cause movement of the chute when the shaft is operated on actuation of the trip and means to move the trip into and out of cooperation respecting the parts on the drum cooperative therewith.
12. in combination, a mixing drum adapted for rotation, a chute for cooperation with the contents of said drum, a shaft connected with said chute to move the same, an actuating member on the drum, a trip on the shaft movable into and out of cooperation with the actuating member on the drum for shifting the chute in one direction, a second trip on the shaft cooperative with the actuating member on the drum for shifting the chute in another direction, and operating means to move the trips aforesaid for the actions above stated.
13. In combination, a rotating mixer, an actuating projection thereon, a discharge chute cooperative therewith to discharge its contents, a shaft to operate said chute and a trip movable on the said shaft into and out of cooperation with the actuating part of the drum so that the movement of the drum may be imparted to the shaft substantially as set forth.
