Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, PHILIP A. KOEHRING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Concrete- Mixers, of which the following is aspecification.
The object of this invention has been to provide certain improvements in the mixing machine described in my United States Letters Patent N 0. 899,414, issued September 22, 1908, and wherein is provided a peculiarly mounted trough extending into the drum of the mixer and capable of assuming a position for causing a discharge of the contents of the drum as well as being adjustable to a position wherein it acts in an especially advantageous manner to facilitate the mixing of the materials during the rotation of the drum.
The present invention resides primarily in the operating means controlling the said trough, said means being designed with a view of automatically locking the trough in the different positions into which it may be moved, after the respective position is reached.
The details of the invention and its mannor of operation will be fully understood on reference to the appended drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional view of a concrete mixing drum of the rotatable type, illustrating the invention as applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
The mixing drum A shown in the drawing is adapted to be supported upon suitable rollers and is provided with external gears B adapted to mesh with driving pinions, not shown, whereby rotation of the drum may be effected from any suitable source of power, and regulated by convenient controlling mechanism.
In the container or drum A are provided mixing blades or flights C, a suitable inlet opening D being located at one side of the drum and a discharge opening E at its opposite side.
The mechanism forming the present invention is located adjacent to the discharge opening E. On each of the uprights l of a suitable frame situated in spaced relation to the drum A is mounted a bracket member comprising brackets 2, said brackets exends. By reason of the mounting of the trough 3 on the bracket 2 in the manner stated, the outer, end of said trough always projects laterally from the mixing drum at the discharge opening E, while the inner portion of the trough is practically housed within said drum. The lower end of the trough 3 is adapted to enter the upper end.

The chute 5 leads away from the mixing drum in a downwardly inclined manner and is designed to readily convey the materials mixed to a suitable receptacle such as a bucket, wheel-barrow, or the like, during the discharging of the contents of the drum. Said chute 5 is supported upon suitable brackets 6 secured in a substantial manner to the frame 1 before mentioned.
The means for operating the trough 3 whereby the same may be moved into either of the positions in which it is shown by full and dotted lines in Fig. 1 comprises essentially a shaft 7 mounted in suitable bearings in the brackets 2 and having projecting therefrom a rigid arm 8. The shaft 7 carries at one end an operating lever or handle 9 whereby the shaft may be rocked, and connecting the outer end of the arm 8 with the lower portion of the trough 3 is a curved link 10.
With the above construction in view it will be apparent that by lifting the lever 9 and rocking the shaft 7 the link 10 will be upraised, thereby elevating the lower end of the trough 3 and moving said trough into the inwardly and downwardly inclined position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. With the trough 3 in the position just referred to, said trough performs the function of facilitating the mixing operation taking place in the drum A, since the materials in the drum carried upwardly by the blades or flights C will drop on the trough 3 and will be thereby thrown toward the inlet of the di um.
When it is desired to discharge more or less of the contents of the drum, the lever 9 will be moved downwardly to the full line position shown in Fig. 1 until the trough 3 rests at its lower end upon the chute 5, at which time the point of pivotal connection between the arm .8 and the link 10 will be lowered into substantial alinement with the shaft 7 and the pivotal connection between said link 10 and the trough 3, whereby the trough will have become automatically locked in its outwardly and downwardly inclined discharge position, permitting the lever 9 to be released without liability of the weight of the materials in the drum accidentally restoring the trough 3 to its mixing or previous position.
