Description
r. E; DARROW & 0. E WAIT. Dies for Covering Spool-Heads.
N0.] 47,747 Patented Feb.24.1874.
W 5 A 4. y r w J xx m m y W K UNITED STATES PATENT Orr'ron FRANKLIN E. DARROW AND OSOAR E. WAIT, OF LYNN, MASS.
IMPROVEMENT lN DIES FOR CbVERlNG SPOOL-HEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,747, dated February 24, 1874; application filed August 2, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANKLIN E. DAR- ROW and OSCAR E. WAIT, both of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dies for Covering Spool- Heads with Rawhide, of which the following is a specification:
In our improved annular dies the inner face is provided with a groove, the transverse section of which is concave, and the dies are made yielding by a joint or other suitable means, and provided with lugs or projections, which may be griped so as to hold the dies firmly upon a spool-head, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figures 1 and 2 are side elevations of dies which embody our invention. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on line 00 a: of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view of a spool-head as covered by our improved dies.
The spool is shown in order to better show the use of the dies, but we elect to claim the spool in a separate application.
The dies B B are annular, and their inside face is a concave groove, 0, of a size equal to that of the complete spool-head, Fig. 4. The head proper A, Fig. 4, of the spool is of wood, and is as much smaller than the groove 0 as the thickness of the hide 0, Fig. 4.
In case the dies B B are made of rigid metal,
as cast-iron, they should be made yielding by means of a hinge, a, Fig. 1; but if the metal forming the die is sufficiently flexible to allow it to be sprung open, the hinge may be omitted, as shown in Fig. 2.
In either case the annular dies B B must be divided upon one side, and near this division we form lugs b b.
To use the clamps or dies B B, a flat disk of rawhide, previously prepared so as to be pliable, is glued, placed upon one side of the wooden head A, Fig. 4, and turned over its edges, when the dies B B are opened sufficiently to allow the rounded edge of the head and the hide to enter the groove 0, when the dies are forced together by means of pressure applied to the lugs 12 b, when it may be held closed by a ring slipped over the lugs by a screw or other ordinary device, and thus remain fastened upon the spool-head until the hide is dry. I
We claim as our invention- The yielding annular dies 13 B, provided with the groove 0 and lugs 12 12, substantially as and for the purpose described.
Witness our hands and seals this 29th day of July, A. D. 1873.
FRANKLIN E. DARROW. [L. s.]
OSCAR E. WAIT. [L. s.] In presence of--- y ALBERT W. LANE,
GEORGE OAKES.
