Be it lrnown that I, Louis P. Tuinman, a citiaen of the United States, and a resident or. the city of New York, borough ot Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Unchangeable Motor Number, of which the following is a fulhfclear, and exact description.
This invention relates to legends or numbers for motors and particularly to 'an improved legend 'for useon automobilemotors, the object being to prov-.ide a construction which cannot be changed or removed without detection.
Another object of the invention is to provide a member with anumber or legend thereonso constructed and connectedv with part of an engine that it cannot be changed or mutilated wit-hout such fact being readily observed.
A still further object ot the invention 1s to provide a number plate for engines which may be readily placed in position but which cannot be removed or changed without breaking. a

Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates part of the casing of an engine, said casing being provided with a depressionf `illed with glass or other 4fragile material 3 which-isV sufciently transparent to permit a person to see the numbers or other legend on the strip of metal 4. The number or legend strip 4 is preferably of some good quality of metal and has thev ends imbedded in the casing 1. rlhe number plate 4 may be connected with any part of the engine casing but preferably with the crank casing as this part of the casing is probably the most difficult to replace by 4an unauthorized person.
ln providing a construction as shown in Figures 1 and 2, the number is clearly visible but access thereto cannot be hadunless the glass liller or body 3 is broken. Also, by reason of the imbedding of the ends. ot' the plate 4 a new plate cannot be substituted without detection. The construction shown in Figures 1 and 2 may be provided in. several ways. Figures Sto 6 inclusive, show molds for securing the result shown in Figures l and 2. In these figures it will n be observed that member 5 is a mold having a recess 6, said mold having upstanding end walls 7 and 8 on whichthe mold blocks 9 are mounted, said mold blocks being as shown in Figures 4 and 5, namely with a recess 10 on the under face whereby an opening is provided for the plate 4'. When the mold 5 is in use, the plate 4 is mounted in the recesses 1G and extends entirely vacross the recess 6 in the mold 5 after which the mold is filled with'molten glass so as to provide the body After the glass is solidified the plate 4 with its surrounding body 3 of glass is placed in a mold as shown in Figure 6 and occupies part of the opening 11 into which the molten metal is poured when cast.- ing the casing of the engine.
The mold 5 may be smooth it desired but preferably it is formed with a number ot notches 13 in which. are placed cross bars or pl 14 which are preferably reduced or notched so as to provide reduced extensions 15 and 16. lVhen. the bars or plates 14 are arranged in the notches 13 they rest against the plate 4 so that when the glass 3 is poured into the mold, these bars or plates will be imbedded but will project. beyond the glass body 3 and will, consequently, have their ends or reduced portions 15 and 16 imbedded in the vcasing l in the iinished product. r1ihis construction and arrangement of cross bars 14 will maire lit extremely ditlicult, if not impossible, for vanyone to remove the plate 4 without detection. rlhe bars 14 couldbe made to extend across all or certain of the figures but Without oblit erating the same.
In Figure V6, the construction is intended to represent a mold for casting the bottom part of the crank casing and when the mold is poured into the opening 11 it will flow around the plate 4 and the iillingof glass as it fills said opening 11. When the casting is removed from the mold, the members 3 and 4 Will be imbedded as shown in Figures 1 and 2, and consequently, the number plate `is substantially proof against any changing Without mutilation. If desired, instead of casting the glass body 3 First, a
sand core 12 could be formed on the plate 4 as shown in Figure 7 and this corre and the platel mounted as shown in Figure 6. After the crankcasing has been cast, the core 12 must be removed and molten glass poured into the cavity.
In either method of manufacture, the re- Bult will be the same as shown in Figures 1 and 2, namely, the provision of aV number plate having parts thereof imbedded in the casting and the remaining parts surrounded by a transparent covering body.
What I claim vis:--
1. An unchangeable motor number. comm prising a number plate having parts thereof imbedded in the motor, and transparent means enclosing the remaining parts.
2.1L device of the character described, comprising a number plate embedded in a motor casing, and a body of glass surround ing part of the number plate; y I
3. A motor'number plate, comprisinga strip of'metal having a legend thereon, the strip having a portion embedded in motor casing, and a body of transparent protecting material surrounding that part of said strip olf metal having said legend thereon.
4. In a number plate for motors, the combination with a motor providedy with a depression, of a transparent filling for said depression, and a number plate extending through said filling and with the ends imbedded in the motor.
5. The combina-tion With a motor having a depression in the casing thereof, of a number plate lia-ving a. legend thereon arranged with the ends of the number plate imbedded in the casing, a barextending across said depression between the top and bottom thereof, and a transparent casting surrounding the body olf said plate and substantiallyl vfilling said depression.
6. In a number plate for motors, the com-V bination with a motor provided With a depression, of a number plate extending through said depression and With the Vends imbedded in the motor.
7 In al number plate for motors, the combination With a motor, of a number plate motor, and a plurality of protecting bars extending across the number plate.
10. In a number plate for motors, the combination with Va motor provided With a depression, of a number plate having its Y ends imbedded in the motor and extending across the depression between the top and bottom thereof, and a protecting bar ex tending across the depression and over theV number plate.

combination With a motor provided/With a depression, of a number plate extending through said depression and With the ends Y imbedded in the motor, and guarding cross bars extending from one; part of the motor to the other acrosssaid depression.
12. In a; number plate for motors, the
combination with a motor provided With a depression, of a number plate extending across said depression between the top and bottom thereof, said number plate having its ends imbedded in the motor,said number plate having legends thereon Vfor indicating tbe number lof the motor, and. a plurality of bars extendingracross said plate` With the number part of the bars extending into the depression, said bars being arranged so as not to obscure said legend.
